These days in India the only way you know someone is dalit when u see them getting very preferential treatment. Schools, Colleges, Jobs etc. Otherwise aam janta will never know.

They are not treated unfairly but they are over compensated for the injustice and unfair treatment they received in past. This is my observation and personal opinion only.

i have sc frnds who r well-off n brahmin frnds who r very poor. atleast in the cities its only a misconception tht dalits r ill-traeted. i cannot say the same in villages. i think in rural areas untouchability is still prevalent.

i remember clearly whn i had gone 2 my grandparents village in early 90's the dalits lived outside the village in a separate place. i donno now as i have not gone there since 15 yrs.

in cities its different. they r very much a part of society.

You may want to correct spelling mistake in the title.

In ancient India there used to be a Varna system, a person would get categorised as per his/her skills. Unfortunately slowly, it got institutionalised as casts. People at the bottom of social ladder were considered "untouchables", I have no idea about the origin of word Dalit.
Yes they faced discimination from "forward" casts, but as of now their situation has improved a lot. Dalits get many benefits from Govt in terms of reservation in Govt jobs, seats in educational institutes. I have not been to villages, but at atleast I have not seen any discrimination or bias against Dalits. Actually no one bothers about casts at all.
