One should never be judgemental based on what you hear from others.. God has given you a brain, instincts to understand other person's instincts.. Use them to the full before arriving at any conclusions...

Any decision needs to be 'fact based' rather than 'opinion based'.. Also, one should also try to always understand the PoV of the person in question by trying to finding out why the person reacts the way he or she does... That will enable making right calls at the right times... 😊

i think what folks have to say about someone is extremely useful information. if we can take them at face value, it tells us what they are possibly thinking and gives us an insight into their thought process. but it also often lets us in on another vital piece- their agenda, good or cynical, and their need to influence us. it does not necessarily reflect how that someone really is. 😊

Great point - good listening skills is one of the most powerful tools to understand and analyze behavioral pattern... But, at the end of the day - you are still making the call based on your analysis of the overall situation..

Ok Raj you should have ignored teh underscored word.. I meant unless its rocket launching trust yourself....no deliverables in the most competitive world is anywhere close to rocket launch.. whther its research or ipod creation... people have ass** covered with good buffers on project time lines and resource backups... Which is why most projects and research attempts which fail were started with shoddy ideas to begin with...😊.. nothing can fail unless its a machine...

well-said Jaya..

okay, after reading all the philosophical thoughts about how not to listen to people and their opinions, just one question- why does the corporate world run on references and word of mouth apart from a sparkling resume?
References matter and it matters that you generate a good impression of yourself in the work environment. Usually, people provide references on their own and the smart ones also know their judgmental / jealous bosses / colleagues and would not list them as a reference.
Given all this, I fail to understand the efficacy of this situation. It seems unusual. Also, more than ONE reference is contacted and the BITTER reference will usually stick out and make the decision easy for the committee in general.

Never faced this dilemma..
At the cutting edge of science where we operate, there are several burnt bridges and unresolved issues and also extremely bitter/ jealous / slave driving supervisors, but I have seen adequate INTELLECT to circumvent them and not get in a hairy situation where your selection is at the mercy of a new employer taking a chance. All fields are different though, and some don;t even require any qualifications / real degrees in the same field. I cannot comment on what kind of references these people provide and how it works for them..

@mermaid_qt:

the corporate world is highly competitive. there are a thousand guys/ gals vying for the same thing. pretty much the same as top colleges. quite likely even a kid who doesnt make the cut could have made it thru that top college. but in these highly competitive situations, the employer/ univ can afford to prune out even good people based on the slightest indication or reference. why should they bother taking a risk with someone when they have all the candidates they could want. life on the personal front doesnt quite work like that. 😊
