I was watching this documentary and it's really sad to see the plight of these kids who have no place to go. Even if they have such lovely dreams they are buried... cos their own parents would not let them study anywhere else, somehow the girls will get into prostitution and the boys might become pimps, or just some drunkard or substance user.

This documentary is about the red light area in Calcutta, and it's really sad to see these kids who have no future at all 😕

I hope you all watch this video

1. The children are the future generation. Do these children have any future?

2. Is this documentary helpful in bringing awareness?

3. Why do you think the government can't do anything about this?

Connie, Isn't 'Born into Brothels' an Academy Award winning documentary? I have heard about it.

It is indeed sad that plight of children born to such mothers is the same. There is no escape. How much ever social workers tries to put them in schools and boarding, they return back to their family mostly because they don't fit in the outside world. Their plight is worse than orphans. Their past comes to haunt at some point in life.

Views on this film: On one hand the creator of this film argues that the education provided by them to some students have improved their lifestyle and some kids have entered higher levels of education whereas it is also said that there is not much proof of that and most of those kids left school and came back to brothels.

Connie,

Thanks again for posting movie link. I watched it last night and my heart was sadden by what I saw. I was much aware of the red light district in Mumbai. When I was very very young my aunt-buaji did social work in redlight district of Mumbai for 3-4 yrs. But what I saw in N. Calcutta was truly sad and heart wrenching for those kids. Some of these families are into it for generations 😳 😭

Poverty and need for food, alchohol and drugs makes people do unthinkable. In these people's case it was just a vicious circle. Dunno how they could get out of it and make a better life.

I felt most troubled child with tremendous amount of talent was Avijit. His earlier sentence really made me cry "He had no hopes for future" something to that sort 😭 😭 .

Hats off to Ms. Zana for wanting to do something about bringing these children out of this hell .

Excellent documentary movie. No wonder received academy award.

Connie, Thanks. I finally watched the video.

1. The children are the future generation. Do these children have any future?

Every children should have a secure future but it is actually tough to say if these children have a future esp. in a country like India where family links are very important. First such children needs special care away from the environment they are in and also enough funds to give them good education. As cruel as it sounds they should have no contacts with their mother :(.

2. Is this documentary helpful in bringing awareness?

To the West may be. As for us, we are aware of such areas in India but still never care or do anything as it is considered responsibility of govt. The good thing about such documentaries about developing countries is more funds from West but the glitch is conversion.

3. Why do you think the government can't do anything about this?

Putting them in local schools won't do much. There is no one for them to make them understand the value of education. So most of these children pull out and end up in the same place. As long as Red light areas gets green signal from govt. I don't know how successfully they can help children in there.

Reading above statement reminds me - A friend had gone to India to adopt a Boy and came back with a Girl. Her reason was eventually all boys will get adopted as preferred gender child but girls don't and the unfortunate girls from the orphange will eventually end up in red light district.😭

My friend too went to Bombay and adopted a girl even though her entire family including her husband wanted a boy...she had the same reasons, the girl might end up in a bad place. 😕

However now they all are happy she is a really happy child, and she has become such an extrovert from the shy child she used to be 😛
