It's a car, not an apology
10 Jan 2008, 2332 hrs IST,Adil Jal Darukhanawala

This is not an apology of a car as many had feared. The Nano is a properly thought-out design, efficiently packaged so as to use just so much material and not more, is safe (meets the frontal crash test limits and also the off-set and side-impact crash test legislation abroad), has a modern yet simple drive train that should deliver performance as intended, can seat four in comfort, has all-weather protection, is contemporarily styled, fuel efficient and spews tail pipe emissions lower than some two-wheelers on the market. In fact, this is a car the greens should embrace rather than oppose.

The Nano has a monovolume style but with clever thought to enhance useable occupant space while reducing the overall length to occupy even lesser space on the road. At just a shade over 3.0 metres in length and 1.5 metres wide, it has a twin-cylinder engine that's placed horizontally at the rear and drives the rear wheels via a four-speed transaxle. The placement of the engine has helped give a low flat floor and good cabin space. An upright seating stance helps the four occupants survive the cut and thrust of the city commute with reasonable comfort. Given its proportions, the car should be easy to manoeuvre.

The engine is a 623cc twin-cylinder SOHC unit featuring multi-point fuel injection with about 34 bhp on tap. A great deal of innovation has gone into the drivetrain and its placement and the company seems to have truly pushed the limits on the engineering front with over half the 34 patents its team has filed pertaining to the drive train itself. One of the key patents is the introduction of a balancer shaft to iron out the typical primary bad vibes from a twin-cylinder engine.

Balancer shafts are used in both high performance motorcycle engines and for high performance motors in rally cars. The incorporation of such a detail displays the logic applied. Thinking differently yet logically has made the Tata boffins attain their minimum performance goals. But more is likely to come from this engine.

The zeal to reduce weight, so as to garner the best on-road fuel efficiency has seen Tata come up with tubeless tyres on the Nano. Similarly, innovative bonding technology of glass to the metal – employed on the tailgate – the ribbed roof to build in more strength and rigidity without adding more material have all played small but critical roles in slashing materials costs and weight resulting in the car's fuel efficiency.

The Rs. 1500- 1700 crores invested is a public money... if they suffer this loss, the company will lay off many more employees making the situation worse.... So whether india deserve this car or not.... India does need roll out of this car😊

I agree Kabhi esp on underlined.😊 Let the chips fall where they may. Predictions and views are always to the contrary.

India Today's interview with Ratan Tata...

http://indiatoday.digitaltoday.in/index.php?option=com_conte nt&task=view&id=3412&issueid=35&Itemid=1
So, is Ratan Tata the new Henry Ford?
(Laughs) I don't know about that, I feel like a much attacked individual.

Is that because of all the protests?
I guess so.

There are concerns related to the car, such as emission norms, overcrowding of the roads and so on…
It's not clear what the real concern is, earlier there was this belief that the car won't happen, as things got closer…

So there is no clear objection to a car like this…
Undoubtedly, the immediate knee-jerk view that you have for an inexpensive car is that it will sell in millions and congest the roads and that everybody will have one.

If only the economics were so good you could instantly produce half-a-million cars and jam the roads.
Precisely, people make it sound as if we are going to produce ten million cars and flood the market, and that every single car you produce will sit on top of every single car and two-wheeler currently being sold. None of this will happen. This car will carve a niche for itself between the car market and two-wheeler market and cannibalise some of the two-wheeler market and four-wheeler market. That is inevitable, and some of it will be from us, ourselves.
A must read!

The Goras may be bashing the Nano in public, but privately I bet they are standing in line, with checks in hand to place their orders now that the price of oil has crossed $100 per barrel. 😉

No. Infact entire globe needs to switch to such cheap cars with great mileage (conforming to emission and safety norms) in order to cut down on global oil consumption which'll cut down global pollution.

I concur.. Heard Nano is giving mileage around 20 which is too good!! Such cars are definitely required for people who cannot afford for huge cars..

With tax nano comes to around 1.2.. Its atleast has more safety than driving the bikes at 100 or 120 speed.. Its also needed for comfort..

Safety is in our hands.. One can get hurt even traveling in tata sumo if they are not careful..

I think its better to have a Nano on the street than a big car... The Nano atleast is said to have a great fuel efficiency, hence saves fuel, does not go over a certain speed limit, and hence ejects lower pollutants than its peers and yet confirms to the safety standards... Its said to be lesser polluting than even the 2 and 3 wheelers.. I think, it would be the perfect car for all city rides... I think, even the current car owners may be interested in owning a Nano, and keeping their bigger cars in the garage.. It will be beneficial from them from all angles 😊
