I welcome a change happening at school level, but unless the flow of information and religious education is guaranteed to be uninterrupted at the student's home, I don't see success of this system :)

Now if we apply this to every child and we have a chance to a peacefull world that we all so desire and hope to see. I feel ignorance results in fear and offensive in case of religions...

The other point of learning and practising some sort of religion brings structure when growing up, as in Hindu religion where pooja/prayers can only be offered after taking a bath and as much as I hated that while growing up , i can't imagine myself now not having a shower first thing in the morning and later attend to daily activities. Religion does bring a certain amount of discipline in our personal lives when we think about it.

Agree with you Lighthouse ji!!!!😊 We learn basic things such as good manners ,good habits right from our childhood and relgion teaches this to a large extent! Basically religions are about right thought and right behaviour ;nd we obviously goto school to study in childhood and we spend most of our childhood in school so schools have lot of impact on the child and the practices followed there will have impact on the child and if religion teaches good practices..there is nothing wrong in following some basic religious principles in schools!!

Sometimes in my childhood I used to curse the school authorities for not allowing us to wear bangles, flowers ....we used to think "these nuns want us also to be like nuns....." .But later on I realised that simplicity during education helps people a lot! However it looks 🤢 if school children get decked with lots of bangles, flowers ,mehendi as if they are going to a marriage reception!

I remember the clash of religion of my schools and my home sometimes! In school bangles are subjected to fine and in home if bangles (atleast one on each hand) is a must! as soon as I come to home I used to refresh and put bangles and put bindi!!

Religion at schools should be followed but in limits!!!

Wishes,

Mythili

there's a differene between having religion and having it taught to us in schools. most of the folks who go around being intolerant and blowing up people either went to schools which gave them religion or ran those schools themselves. maybe a case of too much religion?😉

kids would be better off if they spent their time focusing on skills which help them grow up to be productive. leave the teachings and sermonising to parents and communities who best know what their respective kid needs.

very well said chatty boy. as it is schools are constantly under flak for manipulating the curriculum in such a way that it caters to their students excelling in standardized exams like TAKS in texas. I would rather see them expand the academic horizon, offer more foreign languages and fine arts courses than religious courses. Religion is a personal matter for all. Why to force religion on someone who does not believe in god in the first place? at the same time, why teach a version of religion that is a bit different than what the student sees at home? As it is there are so many sects within each religion. where do we draw a line and why should we drag schools in such a situation that they are forced to standardize religion???

Exactly my point CB... Learning about a religion at home or in closed up madrasas does not expose any child to the diversity of world's major religions or even afford them different perspective of their own religion. If we can learn about different cultures/geography/history (of the world) in school then why can't we learn about different religions.? If a Hindu learns about Christianity, he is not going to start practising that... If we can learn about Hitler , romans and egyptians , why can't we learn about world's top 5 religions and the people who practise them?. Religion in school can be like any other subject giving young ones a chance to know about other religions with open mind, remove phobia or prejudice learnt at home and perhaps prevent an ardent follower become a fanatic.

The world would be a better place as a result..

b'cos all you are doing is reiterating your initial thought over and over again, not expanding on that

on the other hand you are not willing to engage on my POV's either, I have explained why I think religion should be a part of the school system and also what are the possible ways

so

at this point debate just becomes re-iterating same thing over and over

so let us just agree to disagree and move-on😃

So what is tolerance ??? Does it mean hearing whatever one says and seeking like a dumbo 🤓😳 !! Each one has a brain and it thinks differently😉 and a difference of opinion is not intolerance😉😃😊!Intolerance is not able to hear or perceive the other person's POV immediately or atleast after some time!!Intolerance arises when one develops the attitude of "I'm(my religion/my systems) always correct and you(your religion /your system) are definelty incorrect".

Exposing a child to different religions helps in understanding the basic point that "his/her religion is not the only good religion in this world but there are somany other beautiful religions and all the religions teach the same thing in a different manner".Infact school helps in clearing any myths any child has in the superiority of his/his religion!! So infact religion in schools help in increasing the tolerance of a person and helps in dealing with intolerant people😉!!!

kids would be better off if they spent their time focusing on skills which help them grow up to be productive. leave the teachings and sermonising to parents and communities who best know what their respective kid needs.

I think the emphasis of this topic is on basic religious principles being part of the school curriculam but not detailed study of a religion by researching it in detail!! For that purpose of detaield study of religion one can join veda pathasalas and madarasas!! Having daily morning prayers during school assembly, having some of the basic principles of that religion in the form of stories in Moral Science subject creates no harm to the normal academics!! In India ,even in normal academics refernce to old ancient astronomers and ancient mathematical principles is considered to be saffronisation of education!! All the so called securalists want to hear the western perspective of history and science!! Indian secularists rely more what on what Max Muller said than what other Indian ancient scholars taught!!

Having self esteem is not having pride and loving and respecting one's own religion is not being intolerant to other's religion!! The people are proud and intolerant with and without relgion but uprbringing can decrease the levels of these pride and intolerance!!!! And a school plays important role in uprbringing of a child😃

you are looking at the wrong place for help on this issue, you cant have this type of a discussion with a liberal, liberals generally are fishing on their idea's about secularism. Generally the people who would end up supporting this type of an argument are moderate conservatives

Liberals always will try not to embrace religion in their persuit of secularism. but moderate conservatives will, if you tell them, hey I respect your religion, but I would like you to return the favor by respecting my faith, but liberals will be the one's throwing the roadblocks of if's and but's.

the biggest hurdles to having religion in school(with a equal platform for all religions) will be by liberal parents

ditto for you dude😉😛

...and i have explained why it should not be part of the school system. all the points you put forward for it to be part, i have countered them with valid arguements already😊
