Channels and websites running false, defamatory propaganda without proof or airing hate speech must fafe legal action and be boycotted. Industry took a stand in early 90s and many stats banned film magazines from sets and studios, stopped speaking to magazines like Stardust after the magazine published too many scandalous claims about stars including claiming a certain popular character actor was molesting minor sister of an actress.

Stars refused to do photo shoots and give interviews to film magazines then.

I feel industry should take similar stand now and sue channels, magazines, websites that publish baseless propaganda against them, their families or even attempt to link them to terrorism without any evidence.

The least they can do is to stop promoting their films, stop giving interviews to those godi media channels and websites and stop attending their awards and summits.

I see no reason why any self respecting actor or filmmaker would attend summits and awards by News 18, Zee News, Times Now or Republic.

The legal action was also a good thing as those channels did not dare air further shows against Bollywood after that.

The problem is, India doesn’t have proper laws to punish fake news channels.. upar se if they do, it will again get abused and freedom of speech will get curbed.

I think fake news is a problem everywhere now. In some countries it flows more freely than others.

Oh please stop with these BS right-wing talking points. The whole summer last year we had ESTABLISHED MEDIA PROFESSIONALS make allegations on live tv that in any other part of the world would have had them sued into oblivion. I don't know about you but I like my news providers to have some impartiality and ethics towards reporting with facts, and not agendas that bootlick the powers that be.

Link please for these unsubstantiated "mujras" for underworld dons or it didn't happen. And no, Im not saying it makes it okay but let's not confuse matters- corruption in media and fake news proliferation is happening before our very EYES.

Urmila's speaking up on threats from media itself is an act of resistance.

That is what stars should do. Mithun also spoke about media crossing all limits when he joined stars banning media in early 90s.

I like how Saif and Kareena also speak about bigotry they face due to their marriage and names they chose for their kids. Saif wrote a column on absurdity of love jihad allegations in 2015.

In 2005 Aamir also gave an explosive interview exposing lapdog media.

I feel there are ways of showing retaliation and resistance.

Bollywood and regional stars can make films, skits, satire films, shows on such corrupt politicians, fake news, or campaign against fake propaganda on social media, educate public not to believe whatever they see on Whatsapp or make films exposing dark underbelly of media, cyber bullies, IT cells, threats from politicians, refuse to endorse certain politicians and parties or attend their events.

Or make movies and expose them later unabashedly or write columns when certain bullies are not in power anymore. Like we have books and movies on Emergency and 1984 only years after those incidents happened and party was no longer in power.

Infact cyber crime is something that Bollywood has never touched in its films except for few offbeat films.

Bollywood stars can learn a thing or two from Virat and Anushka who got that man arrested and tracked, revealed his real identity, who was sending rape threats to their daughter through an anon Twitter account.

Taking on bigger fish is difficult but suing YouTubers and websites or getting trolls arrested through cyber crime branch is easier.

I do not think media has that much power to tarnish reputations now as much as it perhaps did in 90s because there was no internet or social media back then and stars could not directly speak to masses. Stars depended on media to take their voice to masses back then. And people also believed media at face value compared to now, when masses do have sections that are aware of paid media, media bias and do not take all stuff shown on TV at face value.

Even in 70s or 90s media did not have as much power to tarnish reputation as it threatened. Media banned Amitabh, Salman and Aamir themselves banned media and stopped speaking to film magazines, that did not affect their stature at all.

I wish Aamir had not deleted his social media accounts either. He could have kept them inactive but still up there and blogged as he did till 2011.

Salman's dig at Arnab last year was good. So was skit caricaturing Arnab in Kapil's show. I think Kiku Sharda does resistance art in his own way when he mimicked that rape convict Ram Rahim and Arnab.

For that matter I really like Saloni Gaur mimicking Kangana and Navika and satire on thesr ladies.

These are small but own ways of showing resistance.

And if I was an industry person I would never work with Khers and Kangana at all. As a viewer also I avoid watching any film with Anupam and Kangana now. I have stopped watching old iconic films also on TV or elsewhere that have Anupam in them, given his insufferable bigotry.

Legislating on fake news in India is difficult given how govts try to push their version as truth, and attempt to deny or bury realities and curb media, social media posts of real life witnesses, citizens and independent journalists.

If fake or real will be judged depending on who is in power then making or implementing laws on fake news is next to impossible.

Anupam kher in old movies is kind of hard to avoid. I can’t stop watching KKHH just because it has Anupam in it 😭

Who watches for him anyways 😉

Kangana is easy to avoid. 😆

They are punishing people anyways. The only solution I see now is first scrap all the central agencies like CBI, ED, NCB.. they are useless puppets now anyways.

Now even if another party comes into power, they will use the same formula of using these agencies to curb freedom of speech. They need to come up with something new.

Those agencies are always puppets of party in power. And were used to harass critics and opposition by ruling govts all the time. Kishore Kumar also had IT department after him for criticising Emergency.

These agencies and their so called independence have always been a bit of a joke.

Scrapping them is futile when everything is dictated by who is in power and everything is politicised.

Sadly even supporters of parties want agencies and judiciary to function 'as per ruling party'. That means the public itself is not aware of Constitution and is okay with politicizing and weaponising independent institutions.

Sometimes I get flabbergasted when I see people openly talk of appointing judges and officers who are 'sympathetic' to govt. Apna banda lagao us post pe - is eerily common.

Reeks of a darbari culture where everyone should follow ruling dispensation and there must be no checks and balances or dissenting views at all.
