We, the people, have always elected and reelected culprits of state sponsored terrorism, be it the '84 (anti)Sikh riot, '93 bombay riots or 2002 Gujarat riots. Thousands have been died in those carnages and yet the architectures have been basking in the glory of Indian politics.
There are few already sitting members of assembly or parliament who are already convicted or accused. Representation of People's Act (RPA) of India states that a convicted person would be disqualified from the house for a period of six years. But then a provision added later to it states that as long as a person is member of house (assembly or Parliament) for more than 3 months from the date of conviction, is still allowed to retain his or her seat. And since conviction is just a matter of time for Mr. Salem, he is trying to get into politics because politicians in india are above the law!

It can happen only in UP and Bihar. Most of the politicians there have criminal records. But Abu Salem? 😲 Is there no rule against parties giving tickets to gangsters? What is the election commission's view on this? 😕

Abu Salem already in poll mode
Banwari Lal Jalan
Azamgarh, October 23

VIRTUALLY ANNOUNCING his candidature for the coming assembly election in the state, Abu Salem's supporters have pasted hundreds of posters of the jailed don in Mubarakpur, 16 km from here, expressing good wishes to people on the occasion of Eid and Diwali.

Posters were also stuck at Palika Bhawan and other government buildings in the town, sending the government machinery in a tizzy.

The posters carried Urdu slogans, which said, "I have the heart of a lion and can change the course of a storm if you (people) extend me support." However, the posters did not have the printer or publishers' names. The posters were pasted in the night, making it difficult to identify the people behind the act, police said adding the matter was being investigated. Abu Salem, a former close aide of Dawood Ibrahim, was extradited from Portugal last November and has been booked in eight cases, including the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. His counsel Ashok Sarogi had declared that Salem would contest the upcoming assembly elections fromMubarakpur as an independent.

A native of Sarai Mir area of the district, Salem migrated to Mumbai in the early 1990s.

I was shocked to see ZEE news reporting about ABU salem standing for elections. This can happen only in our Mera Bharat Mahaan.

I strongly feel we need laws that restrict candidates having any kind of criminal record be debarred from standing for any OFFICIAL posts.
