Social Media has been abuzz today with outrage over Aishwariya Rai featuring in an extremely racist advertisement.

To give due credit to Aishwariya she has stated that she merely agreed to a photo shoot. How Kalyan Jewelers used the photo is not under her control

----------

This advertisement by Kalyan Jewelers depicts Aishwariya in a classic pose of white colonial women being served by their colored slaves. The open letter to Aishwariya does point out a similar photo shoot was done by a top Pakistani fashion magazine as well in recent history.

Why are South Asians still hung up on colonial notions that "white" skin is superior? Doesn't it seem ironic that nations trying to shed years of colonial bondage are still hung up on this colonial racist legacy?

Why is it that fashion photographers in the subcontinent are so enamored by this white lady and servant image that they continue to recreate it despite how horribly racist it is? Doesn't it seem ironic that a nation whose citizens were once abused to play these slaves/servants would still cling onto such images in the name of fashion or beauty?

Do you buy Aishwariya Rai's excuse? Shouldn't a supposedly global icon and former Miss World be more conscientious on how people use her image?

------------

This isn't an opinion of a two bit Freida Pinto but many Indian citizens on social media are genuinely concerned about how she is representing India through this ad. Also Aishwariya is still a Bollywood celebrity.

I hope we can actually have a civilized discussion on the obsession with fairness that still hangs in subcontinental media, without having to be shut down.

Oh wow! That picture is really bad.

Aishwarya's excuse might be honest and genuine, but it's a very bad excuse. She just gives permission to use her pictures and then doesn't care how they use it? So they can do anything with her image? Actually, now that I think about it I don't believe her excuse. She might have not have been fully aware of all the details but there is no way that someone as image conscious as her didn't know what the concept was. And doesn't she herself or at least her manager or lawyer or whatever check the final product to give their approval? She's leaving too much to chance otherwise, and once again I can't believe that someone with her smarts would do that.

I don't know what happened here? Someone from her team dropped the ball and now they have to work over time to fix the damage.

As for Kalyan Jewelers, their entire marketing team should be fired.

I am disappointed that her official response was they'll forward the open letter and to the marketing team of Kalyan so they'll know what's going on. Her official statement should have included a very unequivocal disapproval of the ad.

A white man holding an umbrella for a black man/woman. If this isn't racist how could a black boy holding an umbrella for a fair woman be? It's all about your perception of things.

That said I am against the fact that child servitude is portrayed as acceptable in the ad.

This was the ad Ash shot for.. they later photoshopped the boy in the image

This i agree with. The statement should have been worded strongly to disapprove the use of racist imagery.

It's just a perception like it was rightly pointed out. That the boy was black didn't even strike me until it was pointed out. That he was a small boy was what I noticed at first.

I think you are missing some very fundamental historic implications about discussing racial issues. White people across the world are guilty of the same.

A soldier tasked to serve the head of state, or a hospital worker serving a patient is a very neutral act. It could be black serving white. White serving white. White serving black. Mixed serving mixed. There is no racial implication.

On the other hand colonizers believed their fair skin was superior to the darker skin of the native inhabitants. The imagery of dark skinned people serving white people in stereotypically slave/servant manner is deeply rooted in racism of the colonialists.

The two should not be mixed.

That is even worse.

What was the end result of that ad?
