Freedom fighter vs terrorist: What distinguishes them?

How do we distinguish between freedom fighters and terrorists?

A lot of Kashmiris consider Afzal Guru their version of Bhagat Singh. Whereas he is a terrorist for rest of India. A lot of Muslims considered Osama a fighter for truth. Many Sikhs consider Bhindranwale a saint and freedom fighter and not an insurgent.

So how does one define freedom fighter and terrorist? How does one distinguish between the two?

Is it fair to honour violent freedom fighters? And detest violent terrorists? One man's freedom fighter is other man's terrorist?

(Sorry if it was debated before. I was tempted to discuss this after observing many comments online on other sites).

A freedom fighter is one who doesn't kill innocent people and who fights against injustice and to bring changes which will affect the society in a positive way. A terrorist kills innocent people for God knows why.I still have not understood what's the real motive behind people becoming terrorists. What exactly is the goal of these terrorist organizations? If they are angry with Government then why don't they punish the guilty politicians? Why are they targeting innocent people? It's not going to affect the Government in any way.
Regarding Afzal Guru and others being called martyrs,i think it's mainly their followers who call them that.Otherwise most of the countrymen call them terrorists.

To me a freedom fighter has goal in mind while a terrorist uses tactics. In the end no matter what cause you're fighting for, even if it's a noble one, if you use stealth and subterfuge to instill terror by killing innocent/unaware civilians, or condone the same, then you are a terrorist. In today's world there's a thin line crossing between both, when does a freedom fighter become a terrorist...

What is injustice? Many terrorists allege they are avenging injustice meted out to them. Who defines what injustice is?

Who defines changes that affect society? Who defines what is positive or not? For eg, for say, a Khalistani separatist, getting a separate Khalistan and imposing own religion and laws etc will be positive. What one wants is positive and what one doesn't want is negative!

Even Bhagat Singh was referred to as a terrorist in many books. Only we hail him as freedom fighter. So followers of each side change their definition be it in case of Afzal Guru or Bhagat Singh.

Still doesn't answer who is a martyr and who is not. I am sure if there was someday an Azad Kashmir for real then they would hail their slain terrorists as freedom fighters and martyrs only. Many slain terrorists still get massive crowds honouring them at their funerals for their 'sacrifice'.
Just as we hail our krantikaaris after becoming independent from British rule and after writing our own version of history.

One who fights for freedom has freedom as a goal and need not necessarily terrorize anyone eg Mahatma Gandhi with his satyagraha , non violent , non cooperation movt during the fight for India's freedom from the British rule. A terrorist is usually one who engages in mindless violence that many a times does not seem to have any clear connection to their purported goal.

Freedom fighters don't kill innocent people and don't try to impose their beliefs on other people.

There is always that blurry line . Somebody who is a terrorist for me could be the freedom fighters for others in a diff part of the world.
Nelson Mandela, Bhagat Singh etc were also termed as terrorist at one time but they were freedom fighters for their respective people/countries.
Someone who is fighting or retaliating either to free their country form outside forces or may be retaliating in response to what the others did interfering with their place would be termed as freedom fighter for those people who are living there.

If Gadhi movement had used violence would they have been called terrorist? There is fine line between being a patriots vs terrorist.

Difference Between Freedom Fighter And Terrorist is Purpose For Fightiong Bhagat Singh ,Fighting With Brtisher s Because They Are Doing IN justice Towards India They Were Very Brutual Towards Indians But A Terrorist Fights With Other Countries To Show His /His Religion Dominance Or His Ideology Dominance Not For his His Rights or Not Fight For Country Rights 😊 .
