Well if you manage to get everyone agree to your point, then it won't be called a debate in the first place 'cause debates (with the exception of official debates where decision making is necessary) rarely ends with an agreement from both sides.

None of the options fit for me. To me a debate is pointless if the goal is for one party to eventually concede. I don't think anyone should admit being wrong unless it is a factual error. Otherwise having opinions is neither something to be apologetic or concessional about. I think two conflicting viewpoints can coexist. People can amicably agree to disagree. Coming to an amicable compromise or firm resolution is only necessary when you are involved in pressing decision making. A recreational debate is just an opportunity to expose oneself to differing world views and maybe learning a few facts now and then.

My philosophical stance is usually utilitarian relativist libertarian.

that doesn't even make any sense, and is just like speaking from all sides of the mouth. The point of having a debate is to take sides and beat the other guy's brains to a pulp with style/ content/ anything you can throw. Crushing the other guy's ego is a lot of fun, trust me. 😆Remember too that debating is not the same as attending a lecture where you discuss all points dispassionately. That's so lame and boring. 😆Another thing, anyone who says they come to debates to learn is abs cuckoo. If you really want to learn, you should be hitting the books or reading up on the classics, not whiling time away on forums. So given all this, my recommendation would be to ignore your opponents viewpoints totally if you can. If that's not possible because they insist on sticking around and being a pest, then trivialize them all you can. Better still, mock them or shame them into oblivion. Also never concede a point unless it's for tactics/ cosmetics to buy you some credibility for when you'll need it. Never admit you're wrong, especially if it's an important point. Even when all appears lost, there's always something you can come up with that can save the day. Try that for entertainment value. 😆 .

probably because i wish doing something constructive,i never knew there were different categories like formal and informal debates.I always try my best to convince either the other side with my points or myself with their points and reaching to a firm conclusion.

no one agrees to points one finds invalid. What may be valid to one might be absurd to someone else,i believe thats rarely the case since we all live on the same planet😆
A point gets valid with sufficient data, examples, cases, etc;something similar to proving something to the court of law.

Even with sufficient data, cases, etc... no one's debate points can be proven valid or invalid cause the proof is just perception... so in the end it's really about logical fallacies.. the art of debating...

😆 that's why it was not spoken, but written😆

i think all the other reasons advanced by people happen to be byproducts of debating- learning, discussing etc. For example, one learns from debates even when one is not actively seeking to. There are different perspectives, different styles. One learns about oneself, about persuasive writing, skills important in RL. In the process of taking sides, there also are often nuanced positions that bring out wider discussion. Then there are the usual jokers that make it more fun when they're not too irritating. But again, these are byproducts. Without the desire to convince others, without taking positions and expressing one's viewpoints strongly, one might as well be delivering or attending a lecture. That's not debating and there's no entertainment value there.😊

I will definitely answer your question but not today or now. 😆
I just joined this Forum. So I do not know... But, I like to defend my stance and well, a debate has no conclusion and that is why it is called a debate...

Of course I am always right. It disappoints me that you had to ask that. I am so right that even this comment is not up for debate. What I write is what is.

I chose I am never wrong... Well. Once I have already taken the plunge, there is no turning back. AND. A debate never reaches a conclusion. If it does, it is not a debate. Its resolution.
