None of the options fit for me. To me a debate is pointless if the goal is for one party to eventually concede. I don't think anyone should admit being wrong unless it is a factual error. Otherwise having opinions is neither something to be apologetic or concessional about. I think two conflicting viewpoints can coexist. People can amicably agree to disagree. Coming to an amicable compromise or firm resolution is only necessary when you are involved in pressing decision making. A recreational debate is just an opportunity to expose oneself to differing world views and maybe learning a few facts now and then.

My philosophical stance is usually utilitarian relativist libertarian.

I have to say that personally I fall in the category of 4th option & hence I voted for it..but the irony is my debates are farthest thing from option 4 ..😆.. it goes on for like ever..😛...

You know there are some people who realize they got the facts wrong after they've started debating, but never concede because either they enjoy being the devil's advocate or that their ego doesn't allow them to concede.
These people should come under 3rd category.
There are people who completely ignore when the opposition has posted valid points against their views and then repeat the same point again later on,and continuing the cycle.
These are category 2 people.

I do debate knowing I am wrong at times,I enjoy doing so.
In school I have advocated illiteracy among females and won the competition *face palm*

Thats what a recreational debate is about 😆 however some discussions could be serious when it would be better to think deeper 😛

I am sort of with RTH on this... I never see the topics as 'debates'.. I mostly feel it's an opportunity to express your opinion to a topic-maker, to know different POVs(i especially enjoy this part - one topic - so many people with so many angles!), an opportunity to exchange ideas, an opportunity to get clarity on issues.. and this will ALL be for MY personal benefit, and let me tell you, I have learnt a lottt... I've learnt how to organise my thoughts, my abysmally poor writing skills have improved atleast somewhat.. Sometimes I land up here just for testing myself - given a topic, do I hold any valid/sensible opinion on it? Do I write in a way that is succinct, comprehensible?
There was a time when DM had such good intelligent members in plenty, but back then, I couldnt follow what they wrote, as I didnt have any understanding on many things. Sometimes, I'd read and get the understanding, which helped me outside - like in college or just in general. I even share some good posts with my mother or father too, and discuss with them...some topics just makes one flummoxed..it's nice.
DM isnt 'debate' mansion for me.. 😆 ..I've never been/seen myself as a debater to begin with 😆
