Well, as you know, there are religions like Sikhism where adherents have a common surname like Singh. You think Hindus would be reluctant to come up with a common surname like that?

Reason I am harping on surname is because I did read that a lot of depressed class members converted to another religion because surnames (or lack of a surname) is a dead giveaway.

Hindus could have a common surname that basically doesn't convey anything about the caste. After that point, people will slowly move away from caste because no one really knows who they are unless their parents or relatives have informed them. I was told that i was born in a Brahmin family by my parents. Otherwise, I wouldn't have known my caste. Now, Wiki has entries for surnames where it mechanically clarifies which surname belongs to which caste but once people have a common surname, caste should fade away into history. All that remains then is the uplifting of the poor which is where our efforts should lie.

If we put aside discrimination based on color, what we are essentially dealing with in reality is

  • discrimination based on one's occupation
  • discrimination based on one's economic condition
  • discrimination based on one's surname / family name / last name
  • discrimination based on belief in ancient texts

Did I miss anything? If not, I / we could focus on remediation of these.

Occupations change, economic conditions also change. Surname could be hard to shake off unless people voluntarily do it. Beliefs are something that could be difficult to tackle as people like to carry their beliefs to their graveyards.

I would also be interested to know the current caste situation in urban areas vs the rural ones. Is it the educational and economic empowerment which has eased and marginalized caste issues in cities atleast?

Abolish caste based reservations and grant them to children born out of intercaste, inter-religion or inter-state marriages instead. 😆 That should work as incentive and decrease discrimination to a great extent

Red: That is not institutionalised oppression though. It is also more "universal" and independant of ethnic and social context, making it irrelevant to a debate on discrimination.

On topic, I think we already have the answer:

Reservations are a neccessity to give a "psychological fillip" to the oppressed sections as Rehanism mentioned. However, fliters should be in place to ensure only the truly deprived and subjugated receive the benefits, and we need to draw out indicators of backwardness and identify communities and the major areas which fit the criteria of belonging to "backward" and "marginalised" categories.
But here, whether emphasis should be more on economy or caste, remains the question. In cases like Dalit (including sub-castes) or Tribes, cast is by and large an indicator of a socially disadvantaged position. But the same is not applicable to many other groups where mere caste identity does not serve to mark them as socially or economically repressed.

P.S.: 69% reservation that somebody mentioned is absolutely horrendous. There should be a strict limit on the percentage, maybe about 20-25%. Unfortunately, that's never going to happen considering the ever-swelling OBC ranks and no time caps on reservation.
