please! indira gandhi was a bloody dictator. india was poor and miserable because of that hitler. worhtless female. rajiv gandhi shouldn't have been killed, but she deserved to die, and so does sonia and rahul.

MODI JI KI JAI!

Surprisingly, you support Modi .. both leaders have a lot in common . personality trait wise..the best part.. both of them have guts to take a decision..

With the kinds of problems we have and no stable legislative/judicial structure ( not talking of just the structure but the actual functioning).. in my opinion, India needs a leader who can take tough decisions.. who can drive action in short..

I will not deny the dictator factor completely.. its not entirely wrong..infact there are clear indications, including what sanjay gandhi did and how she tried hard in 70s and 80s to regain power and attempts of retaining the power within the family..

having said that.. I maintian, there are things about this lady that I admire in context of politics..

Before I get into the analysis, I want to state one thing.. Good,bad,ugly.. whatever.. it is a decision that will always be regretted...sometimes even if actions are meant for greater good, you can not be happy about them because there is nothing to justify or be happy about.. greater good comes at a greater loss..

If we are talking of decisions- What options did she have then?
1. Mediation: She tried mediation through Harkishen Singh Surjit, late Sardar Swaran Singh, Raghunandan Lal Bhatia and many others to get the matter resolved. Everyone involved has said that at one time almost an agreement was in sight but the same eluded them by a whisker.

2. Make militants politically weak by strengthening Akali leadership: Congress is at fault for allowing rise of radicalism.. but at the time of the operation, this option simply did not exist..and not to forget, at later stages everytime govt did try to work with Akalis, a fresh round of terrorist killings in Punjab would happen

3. Compromise: 😃.. i wonder!

I can't think of a reason why the decision to move down the militants should be regretted. It was much wiser to bear the brunt of public wrath one time rather than having to bear with Khalistan all their life ...

Yeah you are right as you said the ruling party played a major part in the uprising of Bhindranwale ...May be cause they believed that he would be loyal to em ..And help em overturn the Akalis ..

Also one member here stated that Rajeev Gandhi deserved to lead the nation..but in my opinion his career was shonky ..That's if we don't choose to overlook the Bofors case and revelations by Michael Hershman ..

So in my view Operation Blue star against DYM ...And the other operations against BTF and KLF later in time were very well conceived and carried out with great determination which was commendable ...

Now look ..I ain't saying Indira Gandhi's career was immaculate ..but she made her bones displaying such unprecedented courage...And I would extol her for that ..

Also I agree that those two other Gandhis that you have mentioned are truly Lame and Inept people ..and Indians must make sure they are thrown outta power at the earliest ...

And that India miserable, India poor platitude ..it sounds so friggin stale ..I mean it has become a fashion on IF to make such statements these days ..😆...Now look ...I would firstly attribute most of the misery to the 150 years of constant looting by the Brits ..when they Divided and Ruled India with a fist of Iron ..

@Bold: Bang on..

@RG, MMS, SG..

I mean RG doesn't even comment on the rape cases.. ( why i mention these.. because expressing views on this is easiest.. everyone has only one pOV) .. and yet he doesn't , hasn't.. God knows which Indian Youth is he supporting.. His CII lecture.. Global gyan at its best!!!

Chinese: Well, I hope MMS asks for less taxes from us now..after all he has lesser land to take care of now!

@150 yrs .. this is a wonderful point you have raised here.,. and this factor ha sits impact on our social, cultural, technical, political, economic.. bearing on every aspect of our life..

India has much to offer.. and its growth in last 20 years.. post liberation.. in itself is a great study..

Forget these sad, political debates.. I will take up a simple aspect of brain drain.. how back in 90s..people wanted to dissociate with India.. but now, given the exposure, given the knowledge , globalization.. look what the learned class is achieving..

India was poor yes, but economically it is coming up. .. it is the biggest self sufficing economy.. the biggest problem for us is widespread corruption..

Important, India is developing but India or Indians are not inferior.. the inferiority complex that is there which leads to this kind of bashing.. should ideally not come off people who have got exposures..

The oppression has obviously taken away good 150 years of advancement from us.. but look what a little bit of hope has done.. give it time.. 200 yrs of confidence thrashing will not go away in a decade or so..

Yes, you are right. Maybe wrong choice of word. What I am trying to say, being the best decision available at that point in time, what had to be done was done. But yes as a nation, sensitivity is required to be maintained to the innocent lives that had to be taken away..essentially, no gloating .. as some of the media articles did post the operation which were not in good taste and possibly fueled the anger..

Yeah you are right as you said the ruling party played a major part in the uprising of Bhindranwale ...May be cause they believed that he would be loyal to em ..And help em overturn the Akalis ..

Classic case.. Same as Mr. Bush and Afghanistan/Pakistan..

They pay to create a new group that can act in their name.. and once the new group garners enough power it retaliates.. Same old power greed story.. 😔

Also one member here stated that Rajeev Gandhi deserved to lead the nation..but in my opinion his career was shonky ..That's if we don't choose to overlook the Bofors case and revelations by Michael Hershman ..

I would agree somewhat.. for me he is not the greatest PM..

His claim to fame is: early 90s.. but none of that would have happened if not for the famine of late 80s.. and deplorable situation of India that forced him to open up the economy to the world under pressure from world bank..

Its not a decision he took as a leader.. its a decision that destiny forced upon India and thank god it did..

So in my view Operation Blue star against DYM ...And the other operations against BTF and KLF later in time were very well conceived and carried out with great determination which was commendable ...

Yes..

@ Bold: Absolutely well said...😆 ..I can only pity those people who themselves have not contributed even a bit to the richness, prosperity ( Or whatever term they would like to use..😆 ) of the nations where they have migrated and still despise the country of their origin...And a few even offer tacky solutions to tackle problems without having a proper understanding of the history and even current issues.. ..which is hilarious..Look one needs to read what lies in between the lines of history and devise measures so that the same thing doesn't happen again ..Instead of wailing over the current state of affairs that ensued due to inevitable circumstances back in time. Yeah It must be the inferiority complex that shrouds their logic an thinking ...😆

Oh ! Yeah ...The economy's engines must be kept rumbling ..Growth in excess of 10 % would work wonders in the days to come ...And for that to happen the people in India must look past the veil of prejudices those politicians have created for em ..and choose the right people for the task ..rather than the current greedy regime...

Vintu ...😛

She was just keeping the policies of "socialism" espoused by the"Gandhians" alive! To storm the Golden temple was indeed a gutsy move, but may be there was a better way? How hard is it to fight an enemy that has willingly drawn borders around it and is surrounded on all sides. I know that they had locked themselves in with rations to last several months, but eventually, they would have to come out for some necessity.

Your recounting of events that lead to Indira's assasination are excellent.

@BOLD: The Brits impoverished India by tapping into all of India's resources, but the moghuls who came before them had already broken the social fabric that held Indians together. In essence, the degeneration of India started in the 15th century and many "foreigners" have had a hand in the destruction of what could have been the most progressive society!

@bold,

Much before Moghuls..

In my opinion, the basic problem with India.. Britishers should be thanked for one thing.. for rise of Nationalism.. had they not been here. .. who knows for how many more centuries India would have been oblivious to this concept...

You speak of Moghuls, the thing is.. go as back.. India was never India.. what we have had are these kingdoms ever enlarging/diminishing..

Indians - common man 0 has always been exposed to service kind of a mentality.. pay him the wages and get work done.. who was getting work done..was not important..kings changed from time to time..

Moghuls, have some positives attributed to them too.. You will have to credit them atleast for lying the base of modern India ( united India)..

Why was it so easy for Brits to rule India.. like historians say.. Indians failed Indians..

The sepoys.. pay the wage and get the work done..

there are a lot of negatives a lot negatives..in all these conquests over the ages.. but one thing is common.. every foreign rule bonded India as a nation more..

Riots are when two sides are fighting against each other and people from both sides get hurt or killed...sometime I feel,Our judiciary never get fair judgment even supreme court judgment biased on ruling government. It shows that all government machinery are control by political power.. And Justice system is determined to protect the guilty persons... That is why Justice system has failed to punish the real guilty persons for 28+ years...actually there is no meaning in getting verdict of the case after 2-30 years...Justice delayed is Justice denied.

I have read a book on the 1984 Sikh Riots, incidentally by the same man who flung his shoe on Pranab Mukherjee, now the President of India - Jarnail Singh. The book is titles "I accuse..." and is really heart wrending
The atrocities committed on the community is a brutal reminder to me about how twisted we all can become, once we step into a trail of madness, based on nothing but silly prejudice and stupid beliefs. This saddened me as a fellow human and an Indian. I wasn't even born then, but I feel for them.
There was a recent article in Times Of India, where they said that the CBI has stated in front of the court that there was no record of any riots against Sikhs with the police, and without any official record, we can very well suggest that more than 3 million Sikh's committed mass suicide.
I don't have any resources to prove if what TOI said was indeed correct, but if this was what they said, I'm disgusted beyond belief.
All the people who died giving our country its independence, I'm sorry.
Just that.

India as a country only existed after Gandhi decided to cave in to Jina's demands and form Pakistan. the consequences of that one ill-thought action is something we can see even today.
If we date back to the Mughal (or as you call him - Moghul) rulers (Aurangzeb mostly, seeing as he was the one under whom Bharat gained the most land) - India stretched over to Afghanistan from Bangladesh.
