It would be like being the Diwali Grinch to ban fireworks altogether. They are noisy and polluting; but at the same time they add to the fun and festive spirit of Diwali. Without fireworks, Diwali would not be the same.

Fireworks are fine as long as people are willing to make compromises to ensure the safety and comfort of others - Avoiding late night noisy fireworks, trying to agree as a neighborhood on designated fireworks areas, and being considerate to elderly, small children and animals.

Festival celebration is a bit lackadaisical in India. I don't think bans are in order, but a few laws regarding noise and safety, plus strict enforcement will mean that celebrations don't become a huge grievance for others.

I hope India is more vigilant during this period against terrorist bombers making an appearance as she celebrates Diwali.
Satan exists in the terrorists and they attack even Mosques, temples and schools.
Mumbai has to be careful as it is always targeted.

No...I dont fire crackers since last 6-7 years...
There are many reasons for not firing crackers. Some of them are:-
1. It creates pollution. Already we have lot of it why to add more?
2. The children working at fire crackers' factory get very less wages & they are exploited very badly. Even they loose their life sometimes.
3. Rather than wasting money on buying crackers donate or distribute something in poor people...u will get more satisfaction...

Fireworks and especially the frigging variety of BOMBS should be banned. Not that anything after being banned is stopped being used in India, but yes, ban would be solace to my Diwali. Anyway, I know that is not going to happen because in my opinion, even Holi colors should be banned and so should cigarette smoking be. But er, I am not yet the prime minister of India. 😳

So speaking on real level, fireworks and crackers are very beautiful, even the noises of the bombs are like music to people ears. However I am more concerned about my lungs and the insides of my ears, seriously. I try to encourage the Diwali I like. I like kindling oil lamps and possibly wishing people in a voice that I can muster only once a year, a warm one. Diwali should be more like the day you enjoy, look your best, eat quality and most importantly make people happy which I am not fanatic about, but still, it brings you happiness at the end of the day. Diwali never meant disturbing people's sleep at two in the morning with stacks of bombs or infecting the place so much, the bad smell doesn't leave for weeks to come!

I can see the issue with fireworks maybe because of the noise and air pollution as well as the fact that a lot of the time the fireworks are a product of child labour and children using gunpowder at such a young age but erm, ban holi colours? WHYYY?!

Some 2 years ago there was a massive UoL holi event on the grounds of UCL and because no-one bothered cleaning up after the grass was pink, blue and purple for about a year and a half.😛

London looked amazing on Diwali! If I'm honest then I quite enjoy reading people's status' about how loud the fireworks are and how people are silly to continue playing when they are obviously 'trying to sleep'😆

Coming back to the question asked..
Diwali for me would be incomplete without fireworks! It's not a day for me to worry about my lungs or 'look my best'. If I was really that bothered about looking my best then I wouldn't go crazy on the sweets and savouries. When I was a small kid, there was an incident when a rocket ended up firing in the completely wrong direction and burnt through my dress (almost burning me!) lol yet I still love the tradition!

P.S. If fireworks do get banned in India, I predict people would buy double the amount and play anyway!😛

No crackers see diwali is festival of lights and if it just about lights then lantern and small oil lamps should be best way to lite up your place and apart crackers are some thing that create pollution and noise which is not the motive of the festival.. whereas now bursting cracker is become a fashion statement
