I know I will be flamed for saying this, but personally, I never found him to be the greatest composer that everyone makes him out to be. Especially the hype around "Jai Ho" and the accolades that he received for that song, including two Academy awards, still eludes me sometimes. He has this eccentric or offbeat style which most people appreciate, I think.

Yes Phoenix. I am aware of the hype around Jai HO which was substandard by Rahman's yardstick. For some reason he has not been doing good job of late. Otherwise people won't critic him right and left.

This song is not even Jai ho standard. 🤢
ARR is capable of doing much better job

Personally I love ARR compositions but I agree with you that Jai Ho is not his best even not closer to Dil Se, Roja, Taal, Bombay or Delhi 6.. IMO

Criticism galore for Rahman on net.

The only person in organising committee supporting R ahman so far is Suresh Kalamadi
AR Rahman's anthem for the Commonwealth Games hasn't gone down well with both fans and politicians. While the song's online popularity is nowhere near that of Shakira's " Waka Waka", which he famously claimed his tune would surpass, politicians and Games officials now want the 5 crore-track "recomposed".

"Swagatham" aka "Jiyo Utho Heyo" which critics say has neither the pace nor the punch of "Waka Waka", or the rousing quality of "Maa Tujhe Salaam", has disappointed. Ever since he posted links to the tracks on his social networking pages, Rahman has been flooded with unsavoury comments. The games committee's unhappy too. Vijaykumar Malhotra, board member of the organising committee (OC) claimed, "We expected a better song from Rahman." Former sports minister Shahnawaz Hussain said, "I respect Rahman for what he has achieved but the track simply does not excite me. No one in the OC likes it except perhaps Suresh Kalmadi." Hussain demanded a re-composition after Lalit Bhanot, organising secretary of the games, insisted that people would begin liking "Swagatham" if they keep listening to it. "Either it's good music or bad. There's no middle way to evaluate the appeal of a 5 crore track, he can surely re-compose it," he said.
So every one else is allowed to mint money ...but ARR cannot😆
Have you asked the contractors/govt. officials and the netas how much money they have made...those undeserving brats...........atleast ARR is an Academy award winner..he truly brought India pride and put Indian music on international charts.....if someone deserves the money....its him...

Ya I agree when Suresh Kalamadi & Co (DDA/NDMC/Shiela Dixit etc) are making money out of a national event then why not Rahman. I take my words back.

Rahman earlier claimed that his song's popularity will surpass waka waka
NEW DELHI: It will be another 10 days before the Commonwealth Games theme song is officially launched but Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman on Monday promised it would be worth the wait as his 'Yaaro India bula liya' would be unlike anything that has happened before.

Rahman said the song would go beyond Shakira's chart-buster for this year's soccer World Cup ' Waka Waka'.
A R Rahman asked to rework on CWG theme

AR Rahman has come under heavy criticism for his latest composition which is the theme song of the upcoming Commonwealth games. Many believe that the said theme song does not match up to the genius of Rahman. They are also miffed by the fact that it took six months and Rs 5 crore for Rahman to come up with such a shoddy composition.
Now, Rahman is re-working on the song since it lacks any appeal. The organisers now want Rahman to compose the CWG theme song on the level of the recent FIFA theme song.

The CWG theme music sounds like a shoddy imitation of his own O Saya (Slumdog Millionaire). I doubt that the amount of time Rahman invested in making this piece of music is worth the sum he has received for it.

I'd divide ARR's music into two broad categories: one is heavenly and the other is shallow, gimmicky and repetitive.

I find it funny when he spreads his arms wide as if he's saying "Here's your music god" -- it reminds me of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. Then there are the "Rahmaniacs" who'd tell you "the Maestro" is the greatest music director/composer India has ever produced. I'd like to tell them I've also heard music of SD Burman, Madan Mohan, Shankar-Jaikishan, Salil Chowdhury, RD Burman and some other greats.

AR Rahman's rare musical talent makes him a great musician, his luck makes him bigger than what he is.
