and..I wonder what gave it away eh? :P

no but seriously, that is quite a big sacrifice to make. Not eating for the whole day/fasting is all fine, but actually walking outside in that heat, with the scorching sun shining on the HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR, that takes some a lot! I'm not sure i'd ever be able to make such a sacrifice! I'd be too scared to leave my house to do the shopping or something as I'd be scared i'd pass out in the heat or something.

Firstly, Thanks i feel so notoriously flattered that I have mixed feelings!!! 😆
ok... lets start with this. You believe its a big sacrifice because u believe in physical comforts.. If I believe in God and truly believe I could walk on burning coal.. I could fast, I could sacrifice and I could kill those who insult my God. Now looking at it from where you are.. it might not make a lot of sense.. but for me since I so strongly believe it does make sense..
Think about it this way.... is there anyone in your life you love so much that you could do anything for that person... (sounds like a yash chopra line). Now imagine that you have to do one of those things i mentiond above.. would u still call it worthless!!!??? faith gives courage, resilience, inner strength and a tremendous mental resolve.. whatever discomforts you have mentioned are too small compared to this strong idea of faith and muslims for whatever they are not.. are one of the most strong and devout followers for their faith....definitely a matter of pride..

I don't expect a room with an AC in it to keep me cool all the time in summer, I expect to get hot and sticky but not to a point where my body can't take it and I feel extremely uncomfortable.
Btw, if I did happen to think that I could kill those who insult my God, then damn I'd be a mass murderer! lol but qwerty it doesn't make any sense, what rewards do you get from God for covering yourself like that in the summer?

Faith does indeed give courage, it keeps you going but I honestly don't see the link between protecting yourself and preventing yourself from passing out and faith? :S I dunno, it's just the way I see it. If I had to help someone, I'd fast and say a prayer to show my faith, if I had financial problems and still donated money towards my religious place of worship, then that shows my faith..but how does wearing a burqa in summer prove your faith?

Wearing a burqa is as common as a woman wearning a sari at home... I remember most guys come home from outside in india and take of everything just wear a pajama and sit topless under a fan and the women wear a sari.. which come with couple of other layers of clothes... and I wondered how uncomfortable.... this is part of culture and doesnt carry any explanations.. all the women in india dont start running in halter tops...there is no explanation for why people are ready to sacrifice.... for what they believe.....😊 same holds true for a burqa....

Saris are still ingeniously designed because they ahve openings to allow air to touch the body to prevent heat acculmalation. Burqas are FULLY covered, allowing no heat to escape.

Good point about Muslims:
I think the muslims are one of the most sociable people among themselves and they greet each and everyone in their group as brothers. There is little class distinction too. I liked the feeling ot comaradeship.
But as usual a few bad hats always spoil the party.

@ bold: 🤣 Tom Cruise heading them.

Human society goes in cycles. We go through periods of reform, and fall back into bleak times. Take the history of any country. It goes through social revolutions and reform, and then time turns back a bit. Similarly any new social idea or faith - will go through cycles.

So when an idea has a serious problem, we fine tune it till we remove the errors and have an idea that can function effectively. Similarly with religion. All religions have problems. In today's age Islam is a religion suffering from significant problems and we need to fine tune it till it serves better. Its like debugging a program. You don't trash a good program for bad scripts. You debug. Even if you don't like it, someone may use it.

I'll use another illustration Gauri had given POH once. If someone gives you a $100.00 bill you can use it for something good like food, books, school fees etc or you can spend it all and get high. It is not the $100.00's fault that people use it for evil. Faith is like that $100.00 bill. Its versatile. Some people need faith to guide their lives. Some use faith in a positive direction. Some use it negatively.

We should always be extremely critical of these negative users and get rid of all nasty bugs in the program. But we have to be careful of not to hurt the positive ones and toss out the useful elements in process.

Btw, you see things from an atheist perspective. How strong is your atheism? Have you tried Battleground God. Its a philosophy test that tests the coherency of your beliefs.

@ qwerty: is it SO neccessary to beleive in a custom that deprives me of my basic right to be counted among a normal human being? do u really beleive that it could be totally a Muslim ladies' choice of covering herself from head to toe in a stifling dark garb?? i would not beleive it so easily if someone had told me so in a matter-of-fact way😃

^lol Qwrty 😆...I think we cant blame any gender for this acts ,its happens becos of thousands of years of conditioning like this happen...psychology of the woman is corrupted by the man telling her things which are not true, different situation, for different purpose, making her a slave to man, reducing her to a secondary citizen of the world..so its natural cos of that conditionning, she cant walk or sit nude inside home also..!! about saree...I think sari is the most decent dress a women can wear...with that sari she can change the atmosphere into hot n cool!!😉😃

Krysty, its like this customs represent community and you just abide by that if you belong to that community....i one is not a muslim woman she doesnt have to wear a burqa.. you cant join a football team and refuse to wear their jersey can u?
More often in matters of religion there is herd mentality and you cant ask for individuality.. so either you become atheist like me...and just walk away from everyting you think is being imposed... or just follow the customs.. the path of finding a middle ground can be painful.... Jesus got crucifed 2000 years ago.. but people still do all sort of things in his name... I just cant get it...

Woah woah slow down mister feminist.. even if thats the case.. there is no version of fast food reform available.. if you want to belong to society abide by its custom,.... there are various kinds of communities including nudist colonies to cateer all mentalities.. and last I heard everyone shouts they are free.. so this could might as well be a matter of choice....
For me its more to do with upholding the tradition and culture..that she cant sit nude otherwise you could always talk about primitive culture which everyone inherits and sit nude.. like those african woman on the cover page of national geographic... 😆.whether you think it needs redefinition or reform is debatable...
