To me, being selfish entails putting yourself, and your needs before everyone else's. Being selfish is a part of human nature, sometimes we can't help it. I think maintaining balance in one's life is the key - as long as your needs are not hurting others or effecting them in any way, then its fine to be selfish. The minute you are hurting others in order to get what you want/need, it transforms into greedy and immorality.

Likewise, being selfless at all times is also not a good thing. I honestly believe that in life, if you want something, you have to go and get it because no one will come and hand it to you or award you for being a good person.

Regarding love being selfish, I tend to agree with you. But, let me play as devil's advocate and we all will give devil's advocate some drubbing in the end :P

Devil's advocate says: Selfish is to put self before anything. Thus, if you do something for someone because you love them: You are doing that because "you" love them and not because other person loves you. Thus the reason for doing something has to do something with "you" and that is the self - making it selfish.
