Respect is a two way thing.

You cant just talk to someone rudely and expect them too take it, Ofcourse the will talk that way back too u too, not just site there and take wat is thrown at them. But if you talk and treat someone respectfully then u would get the same responce back.

You need to earn respect and its the same for everyone despite the age gap. Not just the elders but everyone demands to be respected and you need to respect others in order for someone to respect you back. Just coz your old doesnt mean your experienced and mature and always right in comparison to the younger ones though. Respect is a right that everyone is entitled too, you can disagree with a person in a respected way..no need to be rude and nasty to anyone.

Sometimes, the best way to endure disrespect from others is to simply ignore it. If you feel your grandmother is being unnecessarily rude to you, then ignore her words instead of lashing back. If you retort, your parents will think you are in the wrong because you are younger, but if you ignore your grandmother and simply do what she wishes silently and without complaint, you will be the winner in the end and your grandmother cannot have any complaints about you to your parents.
One should always respect their elders. Sometimes, it's hard to love them when they're being difficult, but respect should always be given. You do not have to love all your elders when it is sometimes hard to do so, but give them the respect their age requires. Then you will always be the winner. Disrespect can never really resolve anything. Sure, you may have your moment's worth of 'victory', but it won't win others' respect for you. For others to respect you, you should respect others. No matter how rude others may be, whether they are older or younger, simply ignore them and go about your daily life. I swear, this is the most efficient way. It's worked for me all the time.

Hey hey hey - respect your elders😡.........😆

Actually I quoted a part of your post and countered it. The moment I posted it I realized I was not truthful there so I deleted it.

I am with you and ajnu both on this topic. I do respect age - that means I respect people who are significantly older to me even if they are douche bags. I can't make myself talk back to them. Same goes for the teachers. That said; I do not expect anyone to respect me just because I am older to them. I firmly believe that I'll get the respect if I make myself worthy of getting it. But that doesn't mean that I'll let random folks disrespect me and walk over me either.......it's a mixed bag of emotions based on the upbringing, culture and the evolution one goes through in life.

For me not talking back is not a sign of respect. It is either because I do not care or because its just a status quo I am maintaining. I for the life of me could never muster up any respect towards douche bags. However, my upbringing compels me to treat them well despite that.

Treating someone well is also a sign of showing respect outwardly - isn't it?

It glitters. But its not gold. In fact its not gold plated either. Its cheap gold colored plastic bling. And some people just like big bling.

Lovely! 😃

I am with you guys too on this. I don't think elders should be respected if and when they do not deserve it, but not respecting someone doesn't mean to talk back rudely or to be insensitive. My mother has always taught us, that despite anything they may say, they are elders after all, and whether we like it or not, reacting rudely to any of their statements is just going to worsen the matter. The best technique she's taught us is to wait for the "argument" to be over, and then express our views on the matters, serenely and properly. First, it will disarm the person in front, because he was expecting fighting and more arguments, and second, because there's nothing a calm mind can't solve! 😉

I think elders should be respected, for whatever they do, we must not forget there will be a time when we'll find ourselves in their place. Perhaps loneliness, or fear, or insecurity or whatever else that we may not be aware of right now may make them react in a way they do, so trying to put them in the wrong would just be unfair. I think we should just give them time, and ourselves as well, because they haven't grown up like we have, perhaps that's the hitch!
