"Swadheenta, I am still not sure if I want to do this."
Adarsh told Swadheenta as he was helping her with the packing.
She turned to him
"What is the matter Adarsh?"
" You know when Mom was talking about her decision to save Dad from conviction there was a momentary madness in her eyes. It was there for just a flick of a second but I am sure I saw it and it scared me. That was not my mother, but a woman who is so obsessed with what she had set out to do that she would stop at nothing. The next moment she was all normal. I am afraid that she would do something that we all might regret."
Adarsh expressed his fears
"But Adarsh, it is you who always had so much faith in your mother. You said that Mom would never do anything to hurt us. That she never lies or uses unfair means to achieve her end."
Swadheenta tried to reason with him
"I am not so sure anymore Swadheenta. She might not hurt anyone in this family but she is not so kind to outsiders. I am sorry I didn't tell you this earlier but it was Mom's firm that had prepared the bail papers of Allan Broad. It has been done with so much precision and secrecy that even the staff at the firm do not know about it, including you. I too got to know about it recently. And now that look in her eyes, it has been bothering me ever since. I believe she is capable of doing anything. What if she convicts an innocent to help Dad escape punishment."
Adarsh revealed the reason behind his worries.
"Oh no. I seriously don't believe that Mom would do that but if it does happen, that gives all the more reason that we agree to join her in this. Else you know she can do this keeping us all in the dark. If we know about her plans we might be able to stop her before it gets too late...Now don't think anymore about that. Let's go to sleep. I have to pay a visit to Maamu Maami tomorrow before we leave the day after."
Swadheenta tried to assure him.
"And when do you think she is going to reveal her plan ?. We still don't know why we are going to kasauli apart from having our honeymoon."
Adarsh pointed out.
"Well, that is reason enough for me. Now let me sleep."
Saying this Swadheenta put off the lights.
The next day Adarsh went to drop Swadheenta at the Jilanis' place. Suhasini too accompanied them because she hadn't met Zubeida since long. They had become quite good friends now.
When they reached there, the couple was playing with their adopted kid. They had named him Samar. Swadarsh also went and joined them.
Seeing that Suhasini said,
"Looks like you all have returned to your childhood. Haider sahab, in the college you are so strict with the kids. Who would say that at home you yourself become a kid"
Zubeida said,
"You are so right Suhasiniji. I need quite an effort to tame these two and when Swadheenta comes it becomes a mini zoo"
Everyone laughed hearing this. After some time Haider Maamu got tired and sat down on the couch. Zubeida went to get refreshments for them.
Suhasini then said to Haider,
"You know Haider Saab, everyone in this area respects you a lot. I have seen many times that they come to you for solving their problems and sorting out their disputes...Manohar and I have been meaning to tell you this for a long time"
Suhasini paused.
Haider gave her a questioning look. Swadheenta and Adarsh too stopped playing and looked at her.
Suhasini continued,
"We think that you should stand for the upcoming elections. I am sure the people... "
Haider interrupted her,
"No way Suhasini ji. I respect your opinion but I am not at all interested in politics. I am happy with my job and family. Politics is a very dirty place. It makes even the most honest and sincere person become dishonest. I have already gone through a lot my life, now I don't want to be drawn into this muck. I am a responsible citizen of this country and I try my best to do my duty towards it in my own way... "
"He is right Suhasini ji, politics is not everyone 's cup of tea. It is not place for people like him. He is too naive to understand the complexities of it."
Zubeida added.
"Infact I would suggest that Manohar Sahab should try his hand at politics. He has been a part of the administrative set up for long. He would know best how to handle it."
Haider suggested
"Haider Saab, Manohar is a broken man now. The suspension from job and the shame of being a part of the cover up has turned him into just a shadow of his former self. I would have done anything to help him regain his confidence but even if he tries to make his amends by joining politics and helping to clean up the system, it would not be easy. His disrepute will precede all the good that he has done."
Suhasini tried to explain
"But it was him who helped Swadheenta expose the cover up. Also like me he has also lost his child. I am sure people will understand his good intentions"
Haider said
"But who is going to tell people all this? No one understands what he has been going through. They would not understand that he did the cover up under pressure.. "
Suhasini put across her point
"Suhasini ji, I cannot be a part of politics but I can surely help clear the misunderstanding of people. If Manohar Sahab is willing to join politics, I assure you that I would campaign for him"
Haider offered
"I wish there were more people like you in this world Haider Saab. I have never seen such a selfless person who helps others succeed himself remaining in the background. Thanks a lot. I would definitely consider your suggestion."
Suhasini was really grateful
That night Adarsh was standing quietly, looking at the silent lawn outside through the window, lost in his thoughts.
"Can you pass me the towel please"
Swadheenta was giving finishing touches to the packing. Adarsh did not hear.
"Adarsh... Where are you lost? "
She asked
"Did you see what Mom did today?.. She manipulated Haider Maamu to campaign for Dad. I never knew that Dad wanted to join politics , but from her actions today it looked as if it was all pre planned."
Adarsh said
"You are right Adarsh. I saw it too. There was a smug look on her face. The one that is there when she manages to make people do her will. I don't know where all this is going. I just hope things are not as bad as we think"
Swadheenta said thoughtfully
At the same time in Suhasini and Manohar were talking in their room
"Why did you talk to Haider Saab in the presence of Adarsh and Swadheenta ? You could have done that when they are gone for honeymoon. Don't you think they have figured out that you manipulated the Jilanis? I am sure they won't be with you in this for long.
Manohar questioned his wife
"You don't need to worry about it. When I have told you that I would get you out of this, I will."
Suhasini assured him
Then she thought to herself,
"Manipulations, deceit, treachery... welcome to my world, my son. I wanted you to see it. See that how things are done here. I did not want to keep you in the dark anymore. You have to see for yourself and then decide whether you want to be a part of it or not. I promised your Dad that I will help him build his political career. But he is a weak man, therefore I would want you to take the baton from him when his resolve is shaken. Before that you have to learn the ways of this place and accept it too. I know you won't disappoint me."
