"Here, take this madam. It will relieve your cough in seconds. Believe me"
The person told Swadheenta while handing over the packet.
She thanked him and took the medicine. Within moments her cough was gone.
Adarsh too thanked him and said,
"Thank God you were there. That medicine of yours worked like magic. You know my wife is so careless. I asked her not to take ice cream but she would not listen. She has always been so susceptible to cough and it is already so chilly out here. But she reserves all her good sense and logic for the courtroom."
"Are you a lawyer? "
The man was suddenly curious
"Yes, haven't you heard of the Delhi bomb blast case.? Well, she is the one who won it. My wife, Swadheenta Sinha."
Adarsh looked at her with a proud smile. Then asked him,
"Anyways, tell me how do I repay you for this big favor that you have done on us today ?"
"Oh.. No. It was my duty Sir. Actually my father practices traditional medicine. So he has asked me to keep few medicines with myself for emergency situations. I am glad that I could help you"
Saying this he went back to his work
"By the way, how did you figure out that this trick would work? ..For a moment I thought your cough was for real and I got so scared "
Adarsh asked his wife.
They were sitting in the lawn of a quaint British era inspection bungalow. Adarsh had insisted on staying in the inspection bungalow instead of a resort. Since Jaidev was posted in Shimla it was not difficult to arrange for it. It was a beautiful place, with a well maintained garden and lawn. Both of them loved the ambience and feel of it.
The caretaker had arranged for a bonfire also. They were enjoying the ginger tea that was a speciality of this area. Swadheenta took a sip of tea and then looked at him with a smile
"You don't seem to have learned anything from your mother. She always says that we must look at the evidence a number of times until we get all the angles of it.. If you had done that you wud have known. According to the newspaper article, the dead child's maternal grandfather was a practitioner of traditional medicine and he has quite a good name. So I thought he must have taught his sons a bit of his skills too. I was also not sure if it would work, I just took a chance."
"But do you think he is going to approach us now?"
Adarsh asked
"Mm.. I don't know, Mom asked us only to let him know indirectly that I am a lawyer. I think she wants us to fight the murder case for them."
Swadheenta said thoughtfully
"But it has been almost 4 years now. Do you think they still want to fight the case? "
Adarsh was skeptical
"That is a good question. I too did some research on the internet but could not find anything useful about it except the online version of this newspaper article..but if Mom has sent us here I think she believes that they are still inclined on fighting the case. She must have done her own investigation already."
Swadheenta said
"So as of now we can only wait"
Adarsh remarked
Swadheenta nodded. They had finished the tea. The air was quite chilly. Swadheenta snuggled closer to him to warm herself. Adarsh took the shawl and wrapped it around covering both of them.
"Do you know what is complete bliss ? It is what I am feeling right now. Sitting here in this breathtakingly beautiful place, surrounded by snow covered mountains , looking at the even more beautiful face of my lovely wife and feeling the warmth of her closeness"
Adarsh had again turned philosophical.
They sat like that for how long they did not know until the cook called them for dinner.
Suhasini handed over the gun to her husband,
"Take this, it will protect you"
Manohar took it and went away. Suhasini started following him. Suddenly she saw him stopping at the edge of a cliff. A man came there and handed some money to Manohar who in return gave him the gun. The man took the gun and pointed it at a guy who was standing there. Suhasini could not see his face properly. So she went nearer. The guy was wearing a police uniform. She took a closer look and finally saw his face. She could not believe her eyes. It was her son, it was Abhay. Suhasini tried to shout out to him, she tried to run and stop the shooter but she couldn't move. He pulled the trigger. She heard the gunshots and then she saw her son falling off the edge.
Suhasini woke up with a jerk. Another nightmare. These nightmares have been coming time and again ever since Abhay's death. She got up and went to the washroom. What was the matter with her? Why can't she get these thoughts out of her head? Was she loosing it? She hasn't been able to have even a single night of proper sleep due to these nightmares.
Just then she heard the phone ringing. Who can call so late in the night? She went and picked it up. It was Adarsh.
"What have you done Mom?"
"What are you saying? what is the matter? "
Suhasini was shocked at this sudden accusation
"When you knew that this mission could be dangerous why did you involve Swadheenta in it.?..Why couldn't anyone else take this case.? I should have stopped her from agreeing to your proposal"
Adarsh was blabbering like a crazy person
"Calm down Adarsh. Tell me what happened. Are you in some sort of danger? has anyone threatened you?"
Suhasini was worried now
"Mom, I have lost Swadheenta.."
