Bowler can still play in IPL

Shoaib banned for five years

Shoaib Akhtar arrives for his hearing before a disciplinary committee AFP

Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, 32, has been banned for five years by a disciplinary committee of the PCB for violating the players' code of conduct. The ban extends to cricket for and in Pakistan but will leave him free to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL), which begins later this month.

Legspinner Danish Kaneria, also charged with criticising the PCB, was let off with a severe reprimand as it was his first offence.

Shoaib had appeared before a disciplinary committee in February after being charged with publicly criticising the Pakistan board for offering him a retainership instead of a contract. The board had offered contracts to 15 players, based on a formula that took into account their performance, but Shoaib was demoted to a retainership from the Category A contract he held last year.

"The board has lost confidence in Shoaib Akhtar and therefore felt his presence in the field was damaging to the Pakistan team, for Pakistan players and for the image of Pakistan cricket," the PCB chairman, Nasim Ashraf, told AFP. "The committee has recommended a five-year ban for Shoaib Akhtar. He will be ineligible to play in Pakistan or to play for Pakistan anywhere else in the world. [It is] a sad day for me and for Shoaib Akhtar. He is such a talented player."

Shoaib, 32, said he was "deeply disappointed and hurt" by the decision. "I will go to court and fight against the ban."

He also dismissed Ashraf's claims that he was a negative influence on the team and vowed to make a comeback. "Ask the captain (Shoaib Malik), ask coach Geoff Lawson and they would vouch for me. I had played with high fever on the India tour (last year), which proved my commitment," he said. "I bowl fast so I am prone to injuries, but I have given my heart, soul and body to this team. I know some vested interest did not want me to be the part of the team, but I will be back."

Shoaib, who can appeal this decision, was already on two years' probation for hitting Mohammad Asif with a bat before the start of the World Twenty20 in South Africa in 2007. That offence saw him fined 3.4 million rupees ($52,000 dollars) and banned for 13 matches, and left him facing the prospect of a life ban today.

He felt the ban was stiff punishment for the offence. "I was demoted from central contract 'A' category, which was very hurtful and as a reaction I said something. I have apologised to the PCB, before the disciplinary committee and before everyone," he said. "So I thought that they would take a lenient action, but this harsh decision has effectively ended my career. I still want to play for my country."

Kaneria, Ashraf said, had been let off with a severe reprimand and has been barred from issuing any press statements. In his column on bigstarcricket.com, Kaneria said he felt he deserved more respect as an established senior player in the side and was not satisfied with the board's explanation of his demotion from category B to C in the central contracts.

Fiza sis,@your final sentence: Well, Shoaib's career is definitely not finished..coz PCB has given him the right to appeal as they have always done in the past too..if he appeals, his ban would b cut short. 2ndly, seeing the interest and the support the political parties of Pak are showing in this case(God knows y?), I don't think this ban would continue!!

As for what I feel about the ban:

I think the 5 yr ban on Shoaib Akhter is a bit harsh...
I mean if they had done so when he hit Asif...that would have been one sensible and wise thing. But for now, I think this ban is quite harsh..

HOWEVER, this does not mean that I'm defending Shoaib or I think he's innocent like a lamb...I am in absolute favour of a ban on him...coz ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Fiza sis, u know that I've alwayz been a supporter of Shoaib even after all his stupid acts but after that Asif incident!! I think that was too much...and all the things he did following that incident uptil now, according to me, was all wrong and he shouldn't have done it!😡Wat Inow hate about Shoaib and wat makes me angry on him is that WHAT DOES HE THINK OF HIMSELF!😡He should be grateful to all the last 3 cricket boards for showing such leniency towards him and covering up all his stupid acts..he should be grateful to the PCB the way it handled his doping issue and saved him from the huge punishments which r usually given for such offence(regardless of whether he took that nandrolone or not)..he should be grateful they didn't punish him at all for accusing Afridi of all the wrong things..he should be grateful to them that they did not ban him when he misbehaved with Woolmer infront of all the cameras n everything during that match in South Africa...he should be grateful to them that they did not put a life ban on him when he hit Asif with a bat..But no! He thinks himself to be some kind of an angel or something...!! 😡

I am in favour of a ban on Shoaib but I think 5 yrs is too long...this is harsh..However, if u look on Shoaib's history, this 5 yr ban seems quite less to me..for all the things he had done! But I think this ban is only for his recent acts...so this is something harsh...

But seeing and hearing Shoaib Akhter's some of the statements in his press conference and on tv programmes where he has appeared today,I'm really sorry but wat I can only say is that now, Shoaib is only doing what we call 'ghatiya-pan' in Urdu..!

Having said that, this doesn't mean that I think Shoaib is a poor cricketer or anything like that! I acknowledge Shoaib's cricketing skills...i'm always hooked on to the tv whenever he is bowling...I am one of the biggest fans of his bowling...No doubt he is a match winner..a kind of bowler which not many countries have had..BUT..besides these things, you have to have a good behaviour and discipline..and keep on the ground!

I think it's very harsh and is not justified at all..After 5 years he will be 37..and as a fast bowler..his career will..end..which is a very sad thing..n Pakistan has lost a genuine and a real fast bowler..who can give early break throughs..I think the Board should justify on it's action again..cuz I really think..he should not be banned..and that also for a small reason..I hope..this ban comes to an end..and he starts playing again for Pakistan and IPL..Hope the people support him..and the PCB..should bring him back..

He should seriously..not be banned 😭

u seem to be unaware or rather less aware of the whole thing...
which small reason r u talking about?
mind u, he was on a 2 yr probation thinggy.. which said that any breach of contract or disciplinary issues would get him a life ban!!!
during this probation period he's committed as many as 6 offences!!
