RISHTEY

The never ending investigations and the tiresome drives up and down for enquiries had made it impossible for either of them to get proper sleep. They weren't investigating together too most of the time. Their time of return was erratic and they seemed far older with dark circles around their eyes. Sometimes Abhijeet would fall asleep on the couch, waiting for Daya or the other way round. They weren't able to talk to each other properly. That night was not an exception although Abhijeet had returned early. It was around 10 PM. Daya too wasn't too late that night as he was home by around 11 PM. Abhijeet wasn't too tired that evening and managed to wake up when Daya came.

"Aao Daya. Aaj itni jaldi aa gaye?" asked Abhijeet

"Haan, kaam aaj thoda kam tha isliye" replied Daya. "Tum bhi jaldi aa gaye?"

"Haan yaar, mera bhi aaj investigation kam tha."said Abhijeet, casually. "Kuch khaoge?"

"Main kha chhuka hu already" said Daya in a wry tone.

The tone was one that Abhijeet knew only too well and had seen many times. Their eyes met. Abhijeet saw some inward anger in Daya trying to find words.

"Kya hua, Daya? Kis baat pe naraaz ho?" asked Abhijeet, gently placing his hand over Daya's shoulders

"Kuch nahi. Chhodo. Kal baat karte hai" responded Daya in a weary tone as tiredness seemed to creep over him suddenly.

"Ab baat he kya kiya kal baat karne ke liye! Waqt mila hai. Baat karo na." insisted Abhijeet

Daya bursted out, "Kya baat karu main? Haan.. Tum baat karte ho kya? Main he kyu hamesh kuch kahu? Tum kuch nahi kehte ho aajkal mujhe!"

"Jaisa kit um kehte ho! Tum bhi toh aisa he karte ho na. Baat nahi karte. Atleast ek baar phone karke pooch sakte ho na ki kuch khaya, kya haal.! Main toh message bhejtha hu tumhe. Pata nahi padthe ho bhi ya nahi" Abhijeet, anger beginning to rule.

"Apna voice messages toh dekho zara. Kam se kam 15 honge mujhse. Kisi ek ka bhi reply kiya tumne? Samjh kya rahe ho apne aap ke baare mein?" snarled Daya

"Tum kya samajhkar rakhe ho apne aapko. Kai baar main bina khaye wait karta hu aur tum ghar aaoge, meri taraf dekhoge bhi nahi aur so jaoge"

"Jaise ki tumhe sab kuch pata hai. How many times I have tried to wake you up! Room mein jaake so jaane ke liye. Tum utthe nahi aur mujhe keh rahe ho ki main tumhari taraf dekhta bhi nahi hu! Kamaal hai.. Aur tumhe kya lagta hai Jis din main jaldi aa jata hu main pait bharke khakar aaram se so jaata hu. Tumhe galatfaimi hui hai, Abhijeet"

"Galat faimi toh tumhe hui hai Daya, samjhe? Iss ghar ke baahar pair rakhte he, Abhijeet naam ke dot ko bhool jaate ho, aur main tumhe sirf Senior Inspector Abhijeet' dikhta hu! Baat karo toh hamesha iss case ya uss case. Time he kab nikalte ho hum dono ko baath karne ke liye." fumed Abhijeet

The fight was gaining heat now for both of them were shouting at each other like they never did before. They had had fights but it never went to this extent, blaming each other for not being able to talk personal stuffs. Anger was geometrically progressing and the entire atmosphere in their house was heated up. Both their anger was at its peak. So many unspoken words of anger were pouring out. The pain of not being able to speak to each other manifested itself in the form of this anger. The anger was not superficial but the deep seated longing. Neither of them understood that the other was tired due to the overload of work that they had been facing.

"Oh achha! Main bhool jata hu tumhe? Tum bhi toh aisa he kuch karte ho na.. Munh kholo toh Daya yeh mila' Daya yaha jao, pata karo'.. Kitne din ho gaye hai.. Tum kya chahte ho, main he hamesha pehle kuch kahu? Tum baat nahi karoge? Bhol gaye ho tum Daya ko! Sirf Senior Inspector Daya ko jaante ho!" blasted back Daya.

"Haan toh rakhlo aise he!"

Tum bhi aise he samajh lo"

They both move away from the hall to the respective rooms banging the doors behind them. They weren't in the least bit guilty of the way they had spoken to each other. Although they had poured everything out, the anger still remained like a raging torrent. They spent some time on their own writing tables reflecting on their next move against the criminal. Finally physical exhaustion takes them over to sleep.

****************

They maintained an unusual silence at the breakfast table, engrossed in their own thoughts about the case. First time it was that they hadn't discussed about a case. They both had to go to the bureau, so they started off together without much interaction on the way too. They finally reached the bureau. According to the schedule, the team was to go to an award function where a criminal had challenged them to stop him from kidnapping the Chief Guest, if they could. So, armed with guns and other protective measures, they started off for the function. While in the car, ACP said

"Dhyaan se sunn lo sab log.. Daya, tum aur Abhijeet, baahar khade raho. Lekin ek saat nahi. Alag alag jagah pe khade rehna..."

Abhijeet and Daya looked at each other. The anger had still not evaporated. They instantly turned away. Purvi was quick enough to notice that, but thought the better of it and kept quiet.

ACP continued, "Aur Purvi, tum mere saat andar chalo and baaki sab log audience ke beech khade rehna aur hum sab conference mein connected rahenge"

They reached the place fully foreseeing the challenge ahead of them. According to the plan, all of them took their respective places carefully avoiding disclosure of identities. The function began and everything seemed to go on well. Suddenly, Abhijeet and Daya, outside, heard the sound of a bullet and people scrambling about running for their lives.

"Kya hua, sir?" asked Abhijeet into his phone

"Abhijeet, uss kidnapper ne yaha pe blinding gas daalkar, Chief Guest Rakesh ko lekar bhaag raha hai. Hum log jitni jaldi ho jay baahar aane ki koshish karte hai..", choked the ACP. "Tum dono unko rokho.. jaldi"

"Jee sir.. Sambhalke" said Daya

"Daya, tum bahaar ki taraf jaakar dekho. Shaayad wahi jaayega aur main inn side soors se unko rohta hu agar woh iss taraf aaya toh" Abhijeet said

"Nahi Abhijeet. Tum baahar jaakar dhoondo unko. Main yahainn side doors pe nazar rakhta hu. Agar who iss tararf aayega toh main unka gala daba dunga" said Daya

"Baat ko samajhne ki koshish karo Daya. Agar tum bahar jaoge toh unki saatiyo ko bhi pakad doge.." said Abhijeet, annoyed.

"Tum nahi pakad sakte ho kya.. Tum bhi kya kam ho" gritted Daya

"Maine aisa kab kaha?" shouted Abhijeet. "Ulta matlab nikaalkar kuchh bhi bolte jaa rahe ho!?"

"Toh phir kya? Maine jo kaha woh sahi hai. Tum bahar jao aur main ander khade rehta hu"

"Nahi tum jao bahar. Mera plan sahi hai. Main ander rukhta hu aur agar who meri nazar mein aaya toh goli chala dunga.. Samajh kyu nahi rahe ho tum?" said Abhijeet, frustrated. "Aaaj ke pehle aisa nahi hua hai"

"Main bhi wohi keh raha hu. Aaj ke pehle aisa nahi hua" shouted Daya again

"Bass karo tum dono!" bellowed ACP sir.

***********

"Yeh kya kar diya tum dono ne, ain? Pichle do dono se dekh raha hu main. Chhoti chhoti baat ke liye lad rahe ho tum dono! Kya.. ho kya gaya!" ACP sir said to duo in his cabin

He had called both of them to meet him inside his cabin after they had reached the bureau following the failure in their mission. The kidnapper had succeeded in his plan.

"Sir, jo poochna hai unse poochiye. Agar woh meri baat maan liya hota toh shaayad hum unko pakad lete" said Daya, blaming Abhijeet

"Sir, yeh toh aise baat kar raha hai jaise sab galti meri hai aur usne kuch bhi nahi kiya! Jo bhi hua uski wajah se hua sir" retorted Abhijeet

"Ho gayi ladai ya kuch baaki hai!?" said the ACP irritated. "Agar ladne ka mann kar raha hai toh bahar jaakar lado samjhe..duty ke time mein nahi"

"Wo sir..." started Daya

"Chhup.! Abh koi baat nahu karega. Mujhe uss criminal ko do din mein pakadna hai aur tum dono he karoge samjhe?" ordered the ACP. "Ab ghar jaakar jo karna hai karo. Jao yaha se!"

It was 10 PM by the time they both finally left the bureau after finishing the miscellaneous work while maintaining an unusual silence between them. They sat in the car and drove off home.

***************

They reached home with the same rotten mood throwing their things and avoiding a look into the other's eye. It was no more a home but just a shelter for two people between whom the harmonious bond was lost.

"Kyu kiya tumne aisa?" asked Abhijeet

"Maine kya kiya.. Tumne he kiya sab kuch"

"Maine kiya??!!. Waah! Agar tumne meri baat maani toh hum uss kidnapper ko pakad lete"

"Achha.. toh kya tum ne meri baat suni? Nahi na? Main jo keh raha tha wohi theek tha. Agar tum baahar jaake khade hoteaur kisine bhagne ki koshish ki toh unpar goli chala sakta the.. Tum sharp shooter ho na isliye maine aisa kaha"

"Goli toh main andar se bhi chala sakta tha. Maine islye andar rehne ka faisla kiya kyunki agar tumpar woh hamla karega toh uss waqt main andar se goli chala sakta hu"

"Tum iss tarah ki batein toh bohot achhe se karte ho", said Daya, unable to hide the sarcasm

"Kya matlab tumhara?" asked Abhijeet, lifting his eyebrow.

"Matlab yeh hai ki tumhara mere liye chinta ko dekhkar, I'm very surprised. Mujhe toh laga tha ki tum sirf, Sr.Ins. Daya ko jaante the"

"Phir se wohi baat!!?. You can't even take time off to talk and why on earth are you speaking to me now! Mujhe tumse baat nahi karni hai! " spat Abhijeet

"Mujhe bhi tumse baat karne ka koi shock nahi hai samjhe. Tumhara beetha hua kal ki tarah mujhe bhi bhool jao"

"DAYAAA...!!"

That was too much for him. He had expected a war of words between them and contemplated union soon but this was unexpected and extremely hurting. He couldn't believe his ears. Daya had said it. He knew that Daya was short tempered but never dreamt that it would go to this extent. Years ago, when he was rescued from the accident, Daya had given him the care, affection and the brotherly love that his heart had longed for. He had looked up to Daya as his own brother and knew that he thought the same too. He had trusted only him. Hearing these words, he felt himself cracking inwardly.

"Mera beetha hua kal.. Mera beetha hua kal.. Yehi kaha tha na tumne..Thank you, Daya.. Log aksar kehte hai ki gusse mein jo baat dil ke andar hote hai, wohi munh se nikalthe hai. Aur aaj tumne apne dil ki baat bata he diya"

That was all he could utter and by now it was crystal clear to them that they could no more be friends. That divine bond of friendship had broken. Nothing more existed between them.

"Oh no! Yeh kya kar diya maine.."

He was angry but her hadn't meant to even blurt those words out. He had wanted to vent out about the mission failure and unaware of what he was doing, he had brought in that simple fight, which in turn culminated in this terrible climax.

"Abhijeet.. woh main.."

"Bas Daya.. Jo maine ab suna wohi kaafi hai, main aur kuch nahi sun sakta. Good night"saying so he moved off to his room.

*********************

Daya did not sleep peacefully that night and cursed himself for letting his anger out of control. Abhijeet's, his buddy's pain stricken face kept coming back to him, the face that betrayed disbelief and shock in those eyes. It pricked him. Too badly. What the hell have I done! He dreaded the effect on Abhijeet and tears began to flow lightly but he wiped them away and lay down. Moments later, he was asleep.

*********************

Abhijeet sat staring unbelievingly, on his table, at the small but intricately designed invaluable photo frame, given by Daya to him on his birthday. He couldn't just believe what had happened. But it was the truth. It had happened. He made futile attempts to stop himself from yielding to the barge of tears that threatened to flow down. Moments later, after much difficulty, he steadied himself. My decision is made!

********************

By 9 AM, Daya was ready to go to the bureau. Making himself sure that he had his usual things, out of routine, he called into Abhijeet's room. No response. He went inside the room and found it empty. He turned to leave when he found an open notebook, probably his diary on the table. He picked it up and found the page too delicate. No!! He re-read it again to make sure he hadn't made any mistake. On it was written,

"Daya, lagta hai humari dosti khatm ho gayi. Humara who 16 saal ka rishta toot gaya kal. Mujhe laga ki tum mere liye ek aisa dost banoge jaise main tumhare liye banna chahta tha. I thought there would come a time in future when we would smile at the moments we cried, but I think it's high time we realize that it's the other way round. Perhaps I did not justify the true meaning of friendship par kya iska yeh matlab hai kit um aise baat karoge? Mujhe kahi bhi dhoondne ki koshish mat karna. Kuch dino ke baad (pata nahi kab) main khud aaunga. Goodbye"

Ispite of reading it again and again, he could see the same old words soaked with the tears of pain which he had inflicted on him. Abhijeet was a strong hearted cop but as a human being, his heart too was tender. It was the tender heart that he had broken and he hated himself for it.

He swallowed reality and let it sink in. It was excruciating. But the mistake was on his part. His phone rang and he picked it up. Within moments, he was dashing across the hall, locking the house and was heading towards where the call was from.

******************

"Kya hua Abhijeet ko? Kaise hua..??" asked Daya as he ran into the City Hospital.

"Pata nahi Daya. Mujhe ek call aaya tha aur pata chala.. aur jab hum log yaha pohonche tab uss aadmi bhi Abhijeet ko lekar aaya tha" said the ACP.

"Zyada chhot toh nahi lagi na.."

"Sir, sar par kuch zyada he chhot lagi hai aur haat mein bas scratches." Said Purvi, with utter grief

"Kya! Sar pe" Not again.

He had always panicked whenever Abhijeet was injured in the head but with the incident the previous night, the scenario was completely different. Guilt began to rule him and the pain that sting him was unbearable. Everyone got emotional and fear grappled them as they waited for the doctor.

"Kya hua doctor saab? Woh theek hai na?" asked the ACP to the doctor who had just come out of the ICU.

"Woh.." started the doctor

"Aap kuch batate kyu nahi doctor. Kuch toh boliye na" asked Daya, panicking more.

"Sir.. woh sar mein chhot agne ke wajah se who coma mein chale gaye hai.."

"KYA!!" said Daya, his eyes widening

"Hosh kab ayega yeh toh malum nahi par koi khatra nahi"

"Theek hai doctor saab"

The doctor moved away leaving them all horror-stricken. Freddy and Purvi couldn't hold back their tears while Daya was too shell-shocked for words. Gathering himself, the ACP said

"Theek hai.. Jo ho gaya use toh hum badal nahi sakte par uska khayal yoh rakh sakte hai. Humara he Abhijeet hai na..(chokes).. Hum mein se kisiko yaha rukhna parega"

"Sir, main Abhijeet sir ke paas rukhta hu" volunteered a no-less-sad Freddy.

"Theek hai Freddy. Kisi bhi cheez ki bhi zrurat ho toh bata dena"

"OK sir" said Freddy wiping his tears.

They all left the place finishing the hospital work. Daya, who was the last to leave, said to Freddy.

"Apna aur uska bhi khayal rakhna Freddy" his voice cracking.

It had already happened with Abhijeet when the goons had shot him mercilessly in the road sending 4 awful bullets into him. He had slipped into a coma then. That pain had been intense but this was excruciating.

***************

There wasn't much difference the next day as Abhijeet lay motionless while others waited for him to open his eyes and flash his catalytic smile. On the other hand too, investigations and stuff were carried out according to the schedule. But periodically they kept enquiring Abhijeet's state to Nikhil who had replaced Freddy for the next day.

***************

As all of them sat the next day in the bureau combating between their worry for Abhijeet and the call for duty, Daya seemed besides himself. It wasn't surprising for them either for Abhijeet was his best friend. Many a times they would spot him shedding a silent tear and wiping it off almost instantly. It depressed them to see him that way.

ACP sir sat in his cabin, engrossed in his own work, pondering over some files when Purvi's call alerted him, for it was she who had replaced Nikhil that morning. Excited he picked up the call and exclaimed

"Purvi, you have lightened our hearts. Hum sab abhi aate hai" and he pulled open his cabin door and informed to everyone. They all started off with Daya at the wheels.

**************

Sometime back, Purvi was inclined on a couch reading her monthly issue of the Infinit thoughts when she glanced up to find Abhijeet making an attempt to sit up.

"Sir, yeh kya kar rahe hai aap. Lait jayiye.." Hurrying towards him.

"Rehne do.. Waise Purvi, tum yaha kya kar rahi ho? Sab log kaha hai"

"Maine phone kar liya hai sir. Sab log aa rahe hai. Aap do din se coma mein the aur hum log turns lekar aapke saath rukh rahe the. Aaj subah he, main aayi sir"

"Do din se!"

"Haan Abhijeet. Do din se.." said the ACP as he entered Abhijeet's ward.

"Sir.. aap"

"Kyun main apna beta ko dekhne nahi aa sakta?" said ACP with his eyes glazed with tears. " Kaise ho, Abhijeet?"

"Sir, behtar hu. Aap log hai mere paas, toh mujhe kya ho sakta hai" said Abhijeet, smiling.

"Sir, aapki accident ki baat sunkar hum log bohot ghabra gaye the. Hum logo se zyada Daya sir bohot bohot pareshaan the" said Freddy, his voice shivering as though he were narrating a nightmare. "Humse dekha nahi jaa raha tha"

"Hmmm.." said Abhijeet avoiding looking at Daya.

"Achha batao Abhijeet.. tume yaad hai ki tumhara accident kaise hua?" quizzed ACP

"Mujhe pura yaad nahi hai sir. Par haan, main ghadi chala rah tha tab mujhe achanak chakkar aane lagi aur maine samnewali truck se collision avoid karne ke liye, divert kiya aur ye sab hua. Achha hua ki maine divert kiya warna mujhe ticket mil jaati" said Abhijeet, chuckling.

"Chakkar kaise aa gayi" asked Daya, opening his mouth for the 1st time.

"Pata nahi"

ACP sir and Purvi did not fail to notice that both of them had been behaving strangely ever since that mission began. Purvi shot a worried look at ACP sir, who in turn assured her with a glance that everything would be well. They continued to speak for a while and after sometime, ACP got up to leave and beckoned others.

"Achha Abhijeet, hum log chalthe hai.. Tum aaram karo. Hum log baad mein aate hai." Said the ACP. "Chalthe hai Purvi" he said, looking at her directly into the eye. She nodded.

"Achha sir"

Daya shot a look at Abhijeet and said "Khayal rakhna. Bye"

"Bye"

Half an hour passed by and Abhijeet was unusually silent unlike his usual way of wanting updates about the ongoing case. Purvi, deep in her heart, strongly felt that something was wrong between the two friends. Her seniors' friendship was one she had always looked up to with respect and admired, but something wrong between them disturbed her.

It was afternoon. Abhijeet took his tablets post his meal.

"Sir..."started Purvi

"Haan Purvi"

"Aapse ek baat poochu?" she said, hesitantly

"Haan pooch na, Purvi"

"Sir, aapke aur Daya sir ke beech sab theek hai na?"

Abhijeet was apparently shocked at the question and turned away.

"Ha.. Haan.. Sab theek hai..Kyu?" said Abhijeet, his lie becoming evident.

"Nahi sir. Maine aap dono ko uss waqt car mein bhi dekha. Bohot ajeeb se lag rahe the aap dono.. Aur aaj bhi dekha sir maine"

He looked at her sort of fixedly for some time. She couldn't quite fathom the look that he shot at her. She continued,

"Sir, mere liye iss duniya mein maa, baap, bhai ya behen ka rishta nibhane ke liye koi apna nahi hai. Jab se maine CID mein apne pair rakha tabse yeh meri family ban chhuki hai aur maine aapko aur Daya sir ko hamesha apne bade bhai mana hai aaur ACP sir ko apne pita maana. Aur iss do saal mein main aap sabko achhi tarah se jaan chhuki hu. Aapke aur Daya sir ki who gehri dosti ko dekhkar main kabhi kabhi sochne lagi ki duniya mein aise bhi dosto hote hai kya. Aur aaj achanak aapko aur Daya sir ko aise dekhna bohot disturbing hai sir.. Sir, please mujhe apni chhoti behen maankar, nazar milakar batayiye sir. Kya aapke aur Daya sir ke beech sab kuch theek hai?"

Abhijeet could just not believe what he had heard. He had always adored his junior for her sincerity, dedication and selflessness. Daya too had lauded her when Abhijeet and Daya used to talk.

"Tum theek thi, Purvi. Kuch theek nahi hai humare beech kuch theek nahi hai"

"Aisi kya baat hui... sir" again a little more hesitant.

"Ek aisi baat jiske bare mein maine sapne mein bhi nahi socha.. Jiski wajah se humari dosti (swallowed a lump) shayad khatm ho gayi hai"

"Yeh kya keh rahe hai sir aap"

"Haan Purvi" and he narrated her briefly what had happened that night and said, "Maine kabhi expect nahi kiya Purvi" ended Abhijeet.

"Sir, gusse mein kahe honge. Daya sir sach mein, would not have meant it."

"Use pata hai ki main iss baat pe bohot sensitive hu aur tum sab log bhi jaante ho"

"Sir main samjh sakti hu. Par maine iss do din mein Daya sir ko kai baar aansu bahate hue dekha, sir. Hum sab dekhe the. Woh kisi se baat bhi nahi kar rahe the theek se aur humare khayal se Daya sir ne theek se soya bhi nahi raat ko. Aapne Daya sir ko dekha na sir. Iska kya matlab ho sakta hai sir. Apko hurt karne se who khud dard mein jee rahe hai"

"Kya faida Purvi.. jo ho gaya so ho gaya" said he with a sigh.

"Aap please thande dimaag se sochiye sir. Pata nahi ki aapno meri baat pasand aayegi ya nahi. Par sir, mujhe jo kehna tha maine aapse bol diya sir. Agar aapko pasand nahi aaya toh please mujhe maaf kar dijiye"

"Aree Purvi.. aisa kuch nahi.. Chalo baad mein baad karte hai."

"Achha sir, aap aaram kijiye. Main thoda bahar jaake aati hu. Aur haan sir, kisi bhi cheez ki zarurat ho toh mujhe phone kar dijiye"

****************

In the meantime, the team had reached the bureau post some investigations en route. The officers settled down to further take the case ahead and so did Daya. But Daya sat staring blankly at his computer screen. His mind was switched off and he could concentrate on nothing. ACP entered the bureau and called Daya to the cabin. Confused as to why ACP called him, he followed.

"Daya, tumhe kya laga. Tum dono munh nahi khologe aur main tum dono ko pehchanunga nahi" asked the ACP

"Sir, mujhe kuch samjh mein nahi aa raha"

"Maine poocha ki tumhare aur Abhijeet ke beech kya hua?. Abh aa gaya samjh mein?" said ACP, angrily.

"Sir..." choked Daya

"Kya sir..Ab sach sach batao ki kya hua tum dono ke beech. Aree Daya, bte ho tum dono mere. Main jaanta hu tum dono ko achhi tarah se" said ACP, in his concerned voice.

Tears well up in his eyes again as Abhijeet's shocked face that night comes running back to him. It was his mistake and he knew it.

"Sir.. Khatm ho gayi sir humari dosti..." said Daya,on the verge of bursting into tears.

"Kya!!!"

"Haan sir. Aur sab kuch meri wajah se hua. Humare beech mein ek aisa jhagada paida kiya jise maine sapne mein bhi socha nahi tha"

And he told him about the first fight. ACP said,

"Pagal ho gaye ho tum dono. Iske liye ladhai!! Phir...??"

He told him about the nightmarish fight the other night and when he reached the crux he broke down.

"Kya hua, Daya" said ACP, placing his hand on Daya's shoulders.

"Sir, maine unke memory loss ko beech mein le aa gaya sir.. Uski waja se.."

"Tum aise soch bhi kaise sakte ho, Daya? Who bohot sensitive hai iss baat pe aur tum jaante bhi ho achhi tarah se iss baat ko. Tumhare munh se aise kaise nikal gaya Daya. Tum unke liye sab kuch the aur shayad who bhi tumhare liye sab kuch tha. Aise ek pal keg use ki wja se, tum usko zindagi bhar khona chahte the! Tumne theek nahi kiya, Daya"

"Sir, maine jaan bhoochkar nahi kiya sir. I did not mean it,." said Daya, whose eyes were red.

"Mujhe pata hai, Daya. Lekin phir bhi..."

"Sir, please..."

"Don't worry Daya. Who kitne din aise rahega. Aa jayega who Daya "said ACP, reassuringly.

"Nahi sir, who jo bolta hai who karta hai.. nahi aayega sir who..."

"Tum ab ghar jao Daya. Kal baat karte hai. Sab theek ho jayega"

****************

In the hospital, Abhijeet sat there, unconsciously rewinding what had happened. It was so painful and he simply couldn't get over it. Purvi had not returned, so he had sometime for himself. Those words kept coming back to him again and again for they were uttered by one he loved the most. Just like his own brother. As this ran through his mind, some beautiful memories flashed past his eyes.

"Aree yaar, tumhare liye kuch bhi"

The times when Daya had teased him with Tarika, and the night that they had sung a lullaby to the baby and the heart breaking moment outside the bureau early that day, after DCP Chitrole had mercilessly accused him.

"Tum mujhe dost maante ho na?"

"Yeh kya pooch liya tumne Abhijeet? Main tumhe apna bhai mananta hu yaar"

Those words now formed a lump in his throat.

******************

At home, Daya sat aimlessly switching channels. Frustrated, he finally turned the TV off and prepared his dinner. Not much had he eaten the last few days except for porridge and some fruits. As he sat eating them, old memories swarmed into him too.

The smile that Abhijeet had tried to flash across his lips while saying "Doctor ne kaha hai ki.. tu..tum..." and had moved away from the place.

Later Freddy had told him about the manner in which Abhijeet had reacted when the doctor had told them about the post mortem.

"Yeh laash nahi hai. Daya hai yeh. Daya."

A full drop of tear rolled down him cheek and rested on his palm. He let the rest fall. It's enough. Please come back Abhijeet.

****************

Purvi had returned and they had a brief discussion about the case.

"Waise sir, aapko do aur din ki chhuti di hai ACP sir ne"

"Arre do din kyu. Main toh theek ho he gaya hu na. Aur waie bhi do din main akele rehkar kya karunga"

"Hum sab aapko fully fit dekhna chahte hai, sir" said Purvi with a cute sisterly touch in her voice.

"Achha behenji... Toh batao main akele, woh bhi ek hotel mein rehkar main kya karunga?" asked Abhijeet.

"Sir, aap yeh kya keh rahe hai? Aap ghar nahi jaa rahe hai?" asked Purvi, thoroughly shocked.

"Main ghar kaise jaa sakta hu, Purvi. Jaha apne liye koi pyaar nahi hota toh who ghar kaise ban sakta hai. Who ek makaan hai Purvi, makaan"

"Par sir, aap kab thak aise rahenge. Sir, aap please sochiye. Daya sir galat the par unhone jaan bhuchke nahi kiya sir. His guilt is killing him every day, sir." She pleaded

"Kya faida Purvi."

"Sir, please..." she started, but her phone rang.

"Excuse me, sir" and she went out of the room. She wanted to call ACP sir herself but fortunately it was AP sir calling.

"Good evening sir.. Haan sir.. sir ne bataya.. Who bohot hurt hai sir.. Aur keh rahe hai ki who ghar nahi jayenge balki hotel mein rahkar ek aur ghar dhoond lenge.Theek hai sir.. Sir aap please unhe aise mat kar dijiye sir... Haan sir.. Ek minute."

"Sir.. ACP sir aapse baat karna chahte hai."

"Jee sir.. Main theek hu.. Haan sir. Aree sir please mujhe chhuti nahi chahiye.. Main akela rehkar kya karunga.. .. sir please main nahi.. sir aap zara suniye toh..OK sir!" saying so he finally cut the call.

Abhijeet seemed restless after the call and a bit angry too. She thought it best to leave Abhijeet alone for some time, resuming back to reading her Infinitthoughts. After some time, Abhijeet took his tablets and Purvi left him alone to breathe in the fresh air outside. After about half an hour, she returned. Finding her senior peacefully sleeping, she went to the couch, rested her head, closed her eyes and drifted off to an undisturbed sleep.

**************

Solitude gives peace but loneliness crushes peace. That was the condition of Daya. Now he was alone and lonely. Abhijeet was getting discharged that day and he was informed that Abhijeet would be brought there. But the guilt still did not leave him and Abhijeet wasn't in the least bit wanting to talk to him. He had tried to contact him through the three days only to have his call cut. But somewhere deep in his heart, he felt that his friend to had the longing to speak to him but the intense pain and anger was preventing him. Tum aaoge Abhijeet. Zarur aaoge!

**************

"Ghar chalein Abhijeet?" asked the ACP, earnestly, looking at Abhijeet directly into the eyes.

"Sir aap please.."began Abhijeet.

" Sir vir kuch nahi.. agar tumhara iss waqt koi khayal rakh sakta hai toh who hai Daya. Unko bhi do din ki chhuti di hai maine."

"Unko bhi chhuti kyu sir. Main sambhal sakta hu apne aapko"

"Abhijeet, tum meri baat manoge ya nahi"

"Haan sir par.."

Toh chhup chap ghar chalo" said ACP sir with a finality.

****************

Daya opened the door and greeted them all with a smile."Sir, aap log"

"Haan.. hum akele nahi hai Daya.. Abhijeet bhi hai humare saat" said ACP sir happily.

" Abhijeet! Kaha hai who?" asked Daya unable to hide the boundless happiness in his eyes.

Sachin helped Abhijeet out coz he still seemed a bit meek yet managed to walk. He stepped on the staircase reluctantly and when he reached the doorstep, he looked at Daya. His eyes were bloodshot and his face was swollen and he had heavy dark circles around his eyes. He looked straight in his eyes for what seemed a long time. Daya stared back at him as though all of a sudden he were a millionaire. His eyes portrayed a mixture of emotions- happiness, hurt and guilt.

They all entered and Purvi explained to Daya about the dosage of Abhijeet's medicines while the others were entertaining themselves. The ACP receives a call and gets up to go.

"Abhijeet, khayal rakhna apna. Main baad mein baat karta hu"

"Jee, sir"

Daya closed the door once they left and when he turned he saw Abhijeet getting inside his room and closing it. About two hours after, Daya took a bowl of hot soup to Abhijeet. He opened the door and found him staring at nothing.

"Yeh lo.. Soup peo"

"Main pi lunga" said Abhijeet not even looking at him. "Tum jaa sakte ho"

"Garam hai, jaldo pi lena" said Daya and moved off.

Abhijeet had his soup and laid down to rest and within minutes he was asleep.

"Abhijeet.. Abhijeet.. khane khane ka time ho gaya.. medicines bhi lena hai.. utho" called Daya

"Aata hu"

He got up from his bed but the dizziness made him unsteady and he fell down, but Daya held him.

"Are.. achha tum yaha rukho, main khana lekar aata hu yaha"

"Koi zarurat nahi.. main theek hu"

"Nahi Abhijeet. Tum yaha rukho, main lekar aata hu" Daya insisted

I told you it's fine" and he moved out of the room.

Daya was atleast happy that Abhijeet was reacting. But the thought that he was still not facing him was hurting. Daya closed his eyes for a second. They are healing. Main jaanta hu. Sab kuch theek ho jay jaldi.

*************

After an uneventful afternoon, the both of them sat engrossed in their own work. Abhijeet was talking to his team while Daya was checking his notification on Facebook alongside other miscellaneous work. Sometime later, they ate a silent dinner. Silence is the best thing that one might want to live in but now it was the last thing that Daya wanted. He decided to break it.

"Abhijeet, mujhe tumse kuch baat karni hai"

"Par mujhe nahi karni hai" and he moved away.

Without a second look, Abhijeet went inside his room and bolted the door leaving Daya staring behind him.

***************

The pain was killing him too. Kyu kar raha hu main aisa. He didn't know the answer to this. He dueled between his heart and mind. His heart longed to reach out to sooth the heart that was equally tormented with guilt. His mind wanted to break the friendship just because of the fight. His heart longed for the brotherly embrace that always snatched away any kind of pain in his heart. His heart won. He fell to his knees and spoke to himself in a wet tone

"Chalo Daya.. tum toh mere sabse ache dost ho na. Nahi nahi tum toh mera bhai ho na. Main tumpar aur naraz kaise reh sakta hu. Aise rehkar to main khud ko he hurt kar raha hu. Jo hua ek bura sapna maankar bhool jaata hu."

His eyes stood fixed on the photo of theirs as he said this and soon his vision blurred as tears filled his eyes. He didn't stop them. He let them overflow his eyes and fall down.He opened the door again.

***************

Daya tidied the table and moved up to the terrace. The night was welcoming as he stepped there. The terrace had always been a place they both shared amazing moments. They had had fights, discussed the most baffling cases and shared their innermost secrets up there. He stood for a long time gazing into the starry sky while his thoughts reeled back to Abhijeet. 3 nights ago anger had ruled them taking full control of their minds. That heart wrenching incident had a profound impact on them.

"Kab thak aise rahoge Abhijeet.. Kab thak. Maana ki maine bohot galat kiya hai. Maine tumko itna dard pohonchaya kit um completely toot gaye the.Uske liye toh mujhe sazaa mil chhuki hai na.. Tum.. aur kitne dino yaar.. Kitna calls kiya maine.. Ok, tum naaraz the.. par ab bhi kya hai.// tum bhi baat karna chahthe ho Abhijeet.." his voice quivering. He closed his tear filled eyes and let them flow."Please yaar, mujhe aur mat punish karo. Maaf kar do yaar Abhi, please." Said Daya, looking into space, his voice cracking.

Abhijeet stood frozen at the head of the stairs, listening to every word that Daya had uttered. He couldn't just believe what he had heard. He wanted to speak out but felt only his lips moving. He stepped out into the night and placed his hand on the trembling shoulders of his friend.

"Dayaaa.." he muttered softly

"Abhijeet..." Came the reply.

He turned around to see the tear washed face of Abhijeet. His Abhijeet. His BEST FRIEND. Their eyes met and they stood staring. Before they knew, they were in the tightest hug they've ever been in unable to prevent those tears of pain rolling down their cheeks on to other's shoulders. Their hearts met with one begging pardon and the other granting it.

"I'm sorry, Abhi.. please.. I'm really sorry"

"Daya.. chhodo.. woh sab purani baat hai."

Coming out from the hug

"Maine tumhe bohot hurt kiya na.. Kitni chhot lagi hogi tumhe.. Maine bohot galat kiya hai.. Mujhe aise nahi bolne chahiye tha" and Daya buried himself in Abhijeet's shoulders again

" Daya... time heals you know.." said Abhijeet, with a lump in his throat. "Bhool jao Daya, who sab ek bura sapna tha."

"Main bohot darr gaya tha tumhara who letter padhkar. Bohot. Kuch bhi thhek se kar nahi paa raha tha main."

"Mujhe malum hai Daya..Ab relax." Said Abhijeet, wiping Daya's tears while he himself had tears in his eyes. "Main tumhe chhodkar kahi nahi jaunga. Agar jaunga bhi toh kaam ke liye samjhe. Ab ro mat"

Once again they both realized that their friendship was just meant to be. Who wanted money and other material things while having a beautiful relation called friendship? They were made to be friends for each other and they knew it. They spent some more time together on the terrace. They shared more smiles and spoke many a tale like there was never a fight between them.

Later in his room Abhijeet said to himself " Kuch rishtey toh aise he hote hai. Ek ke bina dusra nahi reh sakta. Jaise ki ACP saab aur Salunkhe saab. Yeh dono age mein bhade hai par inn dono ki dosti mein sachhayi hai aur bharosa. Humara bhi toh aisa hi hai. Bechaara Daya kitna roya tha. Zindagi mein ek aur baar mera yeh ehsaas hua hai ki main akela nahi hu and Daya mujhe kabhi hone nahi dega. Kabhi nahi. Humara rishta kabhi na toote."

He said his usual prayers at night, thanking God for the gift of such a beautiful life that he is blessed with and especially Daya. He then drifted off to a peaceful sleep to stabilize himself for the task ahead of him.

Author's Note: This just a short non-investigative story that I wanted to badly write after having a personal experience like this. With the duo scenes becoming a question mark these days, I hope all of you like it. 😊 If you do not like it, then I'm sorry I wasn't up to your expectation. Words of praise or a bucket of gaalis- both are welcome 😆 Please do leave your valuable comments as they mean a lot to me for my betterment.

Kya kahu yaar Reshu, speechless. You depicted both of their feelings so nicely, without bias. Yes a thing said by closest one hurts one more than if the same is said by whole world.
Loved the way you put in purvi. Humare dil ka rishta bahar leke aayi, very nice. ACP sir ko bhi DUO ko dantna padta hai manane keliye, waise pyaar se manane wale hai toh nahi 😆

Nice NI. Will be waiting for more from you.

Brilliant story, sis! 👏 👏 ⭐️ Really enjoyed it! Now, wait as the croc gets his forceps and scalpel ready. 🤓 😆

I was deeply touched by Daya sir's role in this story because I have personally experienced the same situation multiple times, once in the not so distant past and I could totally feel what he was going through. Being human we are flawed and we make mistakes, sadly too often with our closest ones... and sadly that kind of wound is far more terrible than any physical one. You portrayed both their emotions perfectly. The narration was first rate and I could see everything, particularly the part when Abhi sir returns. His indignation and hurt coupled with Daya sir's guilt and attempts to fix the damage, and ACP sir and Freddy sir's interactions with both of them were masterfully done. The final scene was really sweet and you can feel the relief and happiness flooding.

I loved this line a lot - "Abhijeet was a strong hearted cop but as a human being, his heart too was tender. It was the tender heart that he had broken and he hated himself for it." 👏 👏

Now, some personal advise. Seeing this level of discord among two legendary friends can only be for a seriously strong cause or at least buildup, and I think you could've done it a bit better. While the opening para summed it up fairly well, showing it in some more detail would've made us relate to the situation even more. Also, while I'm not totally against showing tears and all, it's important to remember that they are a powerful dramatic device and far more effective when used sparingly and at the right points. Subtlety is important, and you largely did that well here. 😊 I don't know if ACP sir would be so quick in calling Abhijeet sir beta, though. 😉 😆

Lastly, hats off for the beautiful role to Purvi. I knew we'd be treated to one and you even exceeded my expectation. A wonderful and loyal junior and sweet sisterly bond excellently portrayed. 👏 When she explains how CID is her family and she feels so close to them, you could've had a little more buildup (perhaps her mistaking Abhi sir being angry and getting frightened for example), but it was still excellent. The unfortunate fact is Ansha ma'am/Purvi will never receive proper respect and appreciation from some and be regarded with disdain despite all her hard efforts, so such roles giving her deserved prominence will always be faced with some hostility. I advise you not to be discouraged and keep it up, for many including me truly love it. 😊

Oh, and what happened to the kidnapping part? Me wants another story from you on that! 😈 😉 😆

Once again, brilliant work, keep it up! 👏 👏 👍🏼

Maine kaha 'sonp diya' parrot ji.! I think every word clearly said that "sisterly glint" "thought as a sister". Yaar I'm sorry you didn't like the scene. Par bolne ka ek manner hai.. "Sonp diya" is not the right way. Did I show Purvi enslaving them?? 😭😭
BTW, thanks for being straightforward.😃
