Background music needs to be improved

I've been thinking about this for a while but I really need to vent!! Why is the BG music so weird. It doesn't match the aura or feel of the scenes. I think the background music is part of the problem. Whenever a song is used, the scenes are fine but when the odd BG music is used, the scenes are not given full justice.
