This post is copied from another thread a long time ago on the BWF called Old melodious songs which has since died a neglected death , but am reviving some of my posts from there! 😳
LIZ'S SONG OF THE DAY
Deewana hua baadal from Kashmir ki Kali (1964).
This song is among the most romantic duets ever to exist in the world of Hindi film music, IMO.
The lilting, heavenly, melodious tune by the genius O.P Nayyar! From the opening bars itself the song hits me right in the feels.
Shammi Kapoor is the essence of the Handsome Hero that no one can resist
I remember joking with my aunt about who the real "Kashmir ki kali" is in this film! Come on, lbr, who has the 'jheel si neeli aankhein'? 😆
But Sharmila Tagore has never looked prettier than in her debut Hindi film.
All the songs in this movie are brilliant, but this one is closest to my heart. Amazingly sung by the two stalwarts of our movie industry - Mohd Rafi and Asha Bhosle and lyrics by S.H Bihari (who wrote so many beautiful songs for O.P Nayyar) that are drowned in the beauty of romance and nature. A heady concoction that makes one yearn to fall in love all over again!
My favorite lines:
Jab tumse nazar takraai sanam jazbaat ka ek toofan utha
tinke ki tarah main beh nikli, sailaab mere roke na ruka
and
Hai aaj naye armaanon se aabaad mere dil ki nagari
barson se khiza ka mausam tha, veeraan badi duniya thi meri
haathon mein tera aanchal aaya ke bahaar aayi
The way Mohd Rafi sings the last bit with an inflection on "bahaar aayi" and the way Shammi plays it on screen!
Truly the singer and the star were connected in a way that is inexplicable in words.
When Rafi passed away, Shammi was told "Aapki aawaaz chali gayi". One has to just listen and watch this song (and countless others) to believe this statement cannot be anything but 100% true.
