It's Shyama's birthday today (June 7)!

I confess I had no idea but I think it's a nice way to remember these forgotten yesteryear artistes - through their songs!
I have always liked Shyama - she has this vivacious look about her that goes well with an ethnic Indian as well as a modern look. She was usually cast as the sidekick, the third angle of a romantic triangle or a vamp, and if she got lead roles it was usually in B movies opposite the likes of Johnny Walker. Which was a pity, because Shyama was a fine actress if you see her performances in Bhai-bhai, Barsaat ki raat and Dil-e-nadaan, and of course, as the lead opposite Guru Dutt in Aar Paar.

I also love many songs picturized on her - Dekho ye chand chhupke karta hai kya ishaare, Ae dil mujhe bata de, Ae lo main haari piya, Mohabbat ki dhun, and the wonderfully fun Sun sun sun zaalima.

Here's one of my favorite Shyama songs, Ja Ja Ja Bewafa, beautifully rendered by Geeta Dutt and set to tune by O.P. Nayyar. With a clever twist to the chirpy Sun sun sun zaalima, even keeping the lyrics of the mukhda intact, O.P manages to create a soulful tune that rips the heart with the pain of bewafaai. Beautiful song! ❤️

Dil pe har jafa dekh li, beasar dua dekh li

kuchh kiya na dil ka khayal, ja teri wafa dekh li 😭

Ja ja ja ja bewafa, kaisa pyaar kaisi preet re

Tu na kisi ka meet re, jhoot tere pyaar ki kasam

A song I used to sing often! You brought back lovely memories! ❤️

I watched Paying Guest years ago and its more popular songs are the romantic Chhod do aanchal, and the teasing Maana janaab ne pukara nahi. But this hidden gem cannot be overlooked! SDB spins his magic again and the lyrics by Majrooh beautifully convey the pain of lost love.

sulagte seene mein dhuaan sa uthata hai

lo ab chale aao ke dum ghutata hai

jala gaye tan ko bahaaron ke saaye

main kya karoon haaye, ke tum yaad aaye

Coincidentally, Madhu, I just posted a sad song too, not one of virah, but one of bewafaii.

There are no words to describe how Geeta Dutt's voice used to express the sad and sorrowful feelings in her renditions. Her expressions. Her feelings. Oh my God, she is unforgettable. I adore her voice. Have you seen her eyes Priya? A life of higher joys is a life with more tears of all kinds. Every blessing is a curse. Only by accepting the curse in full measure, the sorrow will find a free flow! Guru Dutt, Waheeda, and Geeta , all the three are blessed and highly talented actors. This couple were cursed by fate , ruined their lives. Who is culprit? Love or deceit? Difficult to define!

My altime fav song this is !

OMG? Madhu! I can wax eloquent about Geeta Dutt's voice! It can be sensual, and dripping with romance and/or maternal love (who can forget Nanhi kali sone chali - the quintessential lori?) on the one hand and searingly angst-ridden, scorching the heart and soul with pain on the other. How did she do it?

She's amazing and I feel sad she's not given the due she deserves. 😭

SDB and O.P both overlooked her in favor of the Mangeshkar sisters, which is a shame! The pain she had to deal with in her married life added to it. Such a brilliant artiste! 😭

Another gem of Geeta Dutt, from Mr. and Mrs. 55 (1955), music: O P Nayyar & lyrics by his wife Saroj Mohini Nayyar.

Preetam aan milo pritam aan milo
Dukhiya jiya pukare pritam aan milo

Raat andheri aayi balma
Mann mora ghabaraye hai
Duur ped par baitha panchhi yahi ratna lagaye hai
Aan milo, Preetam aan milo….

Bheegi raat mein ped ke niche
Aankh micholi khel rachaya
Preetam yaad karo jab tumne prem bhara ik geet sunaya
Aan milo, Preetam aan milo….

C.H. Atma sung the original song in the Pvt album. only the second stanza of the original song was used in the movie version.

I can't get this song out of my head since I posted it, and I'm so happy to have it reverberating in my head because it's just beautiful!

Copying my post from another time, another thread! 😊

LIZ'S SONG OF THE DAY:

Ja Ja Ja Ja Bewafa from Aar Paar (1954) starring Guru Dutt and Shyama, Music by O.P Nayyar, lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri and sung by the incomparable Geeta Dutt.

This song truly brings out the genius of O.P Nayyar, who is famed for his peppy tunes. Borrowing the tune of the mukhda from the upbeat Sun sun sun Zaalima from the same movie, he scales down the tempo to result in an achingly sorrowful tune that speaks of heartbreak and betrayal. But what stands out for me is the antara of the song, it is truly masterfully composed and beautifully rendered by Geeta Dutt. A must listen and forever on my playlist of sad, sentimental songs! Kudos to everyone involved in this masterpiece.

Please chip in on the thread, guyzz....!!!
