Seriously, this is such a pleasant discovery! 😊My dad is very attached to his native place and he keeps travelling back to Almora 3-4 times in a year. His elder brother stays in Almora and his cousins are in Nainital...so we have been to both these places. In fact, he is leaving next week again as it is Tauji's 75th birthday. Have you visited any of these towns..you must have...
Of course, I know what singhals are. Indian festival/pooja food is the best. When we were young and my father used to go to his native village or Almora..we used to eagerly wait for the baal-mithai and the singauri...are you familiar with them? Yummm...it's been years since I had these sweets..and my mouth is watering right now.β˜ΊοΈπŸ˜›
Yes, Kashmiri food is delectable and uses generous amounts of oil.πŸ˜† The roth is deep-fried in ghee 😳(anything else would be a sacrilege, I tell you...πŸ˜†)...but I have tried baking them in the oven and they come out just fine, though obviously the deep-fried one is tastier. It is rolled into thick rotis of around 1/4 inch thickness...you can see it here...
You have tried the pulao and kheer, which is nice. There are some really amazing vegetarian dishes too...like dum aloo, haak saag (a variety of spinach), khatta baingan...which use spices like fennel powder, cardamom/cinnamon/clove powder, Kashmiri red chilli powder..and of course, oil.
Sure, I will share the recipes of the pulao and kheer soon.

@Fast: It went off well... I'm fasted again today. I have been eating a small meal every night - just some home baked bread with some salad; but I guess, eating once per day is permitted. πŸ˜›πŸ˜†πŸ˜†

@Bold: πŸ€— πŸ€— πŸ€—
It is funny though that hamaarey yeh raaz kitney dheerey-dheerey khul rahey hain. πŸ˜†πŸ˜†

My mother was born and raised in Delhi, and spent one school vacation (exactly one!) visiting her parent's ancestral homes. But if she sees someone who looks like s/he could be a country cousin, she will stop and make small talk with that person, confirm that they are indeed from Kumaon, and then proceed to tell them of her own family's homes in Almora and Nainital. "Meri eeja ka ghar bhi Almora mein hai...," she'll tell them, often following that with a very precise description of the house. It happened once that she even randomly met someone who knew her family that still lives there...πŸ˜†πŸ˜†
When I was very young, during one of my school vacations (like my mother, exactly one vacation), my grandmother took me to see our family. That was the only time I have been in that region, but that singular visit also made a very deep impression in my mind... I remember visiting Poornagiri and Jageshwar (aah, Jageshwar; aren't those temples just stunning). I only just remember slipping and falling all the time (because of the pine needles) when we were in Ranikhet... I remember trekking to a huge Hanuman temple when we were in Nainital, and a temple of Golu Devtaa (this was in Nainitaal proper)... and then another one in Chetai... There was a temple full of bells (somewhere)... [I was with my grandmother, we only just went to temples. πŸ˜†]
And yeah - the only reason we'd look forward to anybody coming back from Almora was because we knew that we'll be getting some of the singauri and baal mithai. (I like singauri much more than baal mithai.) And I hate singhals, BTW. They're awful, nahin? 😳😳😳
Occasionally, people returning from Almora would bring back some gahaut and bhat - which we'd receive with enormous gratitude... No other daal comes close to replacing them... Merey muh mein bhi paani aa gayaa hai... 😳

@Kashmiri food: Thank you for the link. I love food blogs - I will spend some time reading through this one... (You know, of my intention to write one myself... 😳)
"Roth" seems to be quite like a cookie... or rather a sweet matthi... I'll try to bake it once. They bake cookies in Sweden with a lot of cardamom (the green one)... To make it like "Roth", I will replace it with moti elaichi...
My mother makes really nice "dum aaloo", but it is probably not the traditional kashmiri recipe.

@Pulao & Kheer: Haan, please. Whenever you have the time... And if I may, I want to additionally request, Dum Aaloo and khatta baingan ki bhi recipe. (But, don't let this be any inconvenience - jab time miley, tab bataana please...)
I looked for Dum Aaloo recipes, and have already found a number of different recipes - and I guess, they'll all taste just fine, but from just a google search, I will never know which one is the authentic one made in Kashmiri homes... πŸ˜ƒ .. which is where, you will step in. πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ

Awww... No garbha too? It seems like all the joy has been taken out of your life. Have your exams finally finished? How did everything go?

@Dylan: Haley has cute boyfriends... Dylan and Andy. 😳

@Kwerky: This is what I read on Wikipedia:
"The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting produced a frame-by-frame remake of Modern Family, entitled Haft Sang which premiered on June 30, 2014. However, in this version the same-sex relationship between Cam and Mitchell of the original series was replaced by a heterosexual relationship ."
The Wikipedia page also mentions that Anil Kapoor has announced production of the Inidan version. I guess, it will be like the Iranian version...

Thanks a lot, GG. πŸ€—πŸ€— Birthday went well...nothing special.
And Happy Navratri to you too!
Yes, Modern Family is very funny...one of the best comedies in recent years. I was about to ask you about your favourite character(s) but I saw that Wisu beat me to it.πŸ˜› I love Phil's phil-osophiesπŸ˜† and stupidities...and Cam's character and his shenanigans with Lily are funny. All the other characters are well-written too...

I'm sure though that if you have fireworks in Singapore, it must be a very neat and tidy affair...

In most of Central Europe, the only day on which people may set off fireworks is the night between 31.12. and 01.01. Also, the time window during which people may set off fireworks is strictly regulated - for instance, in the city in which I live, one may set off fireworks from 2340 Hrs until 0010 Hrs. So, every year, the sky brightens up for exactly these 30 minutes, and then we all go back to our routine of silence. πŸ˜†

Yes, you are right. In the south, the narak chaturdashi day/choti Diwali day is the bigger affair...so the Hindu Advisory Board of Singapore declares our choti Diwali as the holiday here...so it falls on the 10th this year. But Indians manage to get a day off here or there...depending on which day they are celebrating the festival. 😊
We have some spectacular fireworks displays here several times in a year - the biggest are on New Year's eve and Singapore's independence day on 9th August. There is a smaller display during Chinese New Year (in March) and also in a field in the Little India area here on Diwali. Besides this, the individuals are allowed to burst a few sparklers (phuljharis) only outside their houses and buildings during Diwali.
The restrictions on fireworks in Europe seems a tad amusing but makes sense when you consider pollution and general cleanliness. πŸ‘πŸΌ I wish we could enforce something like this in India too.

And pray what fun is a heterosexual couple...aren't there two more families like it already on the show? πŸ˜• Obviously in India too, they can't show characters/family setup like Mitch and Cam.

@fasting: Haan..eating once a day is allowed...so good for you, if you can fast for all these days!πŸ‘πŸΌ
I real-l-l-y enjoyed reading everything about your Kumaon visit and all the temples and how your mother reaches out to people she thinks might be Kumaonis...how lovely. Yes, the Chitaii temple is the one with bells. They are all beautiful. And of course, all the daadis/aammas went only to the temples. πŸ˜† Aah...the word - "Eeja" - I love that reference to mother in pahaadi. Embarrassed
Same pinch...I never thought much about the singhals too. πŸ˜† Sometimes they would be a coarse blob of fried dough...not very appetising. But singauri (the smell of the maalu leaf!) was right at the top...followed by the plain baal mithai (without the sugar balls)...and then there were some khoyaa pedas coated with very fine sugar...and then the regular baal mithai. Embarrassed
And the bhat ki chuttkaani..yumm! Embarrassed I remember the huge pahaadi cucumbers which were grated and made into a heavenly raita with mustard and green chillies and fresh coriander...and the green pumpkins which my father lugged back on his trips...the vegetables from the mountains have such a beautiful taste.
Nostalgia!EmbarrassedTongue
@Kashmiri food: The blog which I shared with you has some very authentic Kashmiri recipes. I have a couple of more blogs bookmarked which have the exact recipes which we follow at our place...authentic Kashmiri food. Kashmiri food is made without onion and garlic and uses only jeera/heeng for tempering, followed by all those spice powders. I will look those links up and will send them to you with any tips/additions I might have... of course, please feel free to ask me any questions anytime...
There is another nice (north Indian) version of dum aloo...maybe that is what your mother prepares.

Wisu - I forgot to write this earlier. I saw the pilot episode of "Suits" yesterday. Once again, a good recommendation coming from you after "Veep". πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘πŸΌ Thanks! While the character of Mike Ross/Patrick Adams is quite nice, I find Harvey Specter's character to be pretty interesting too. Hopefully, it evolves into a well-etched character as the series progresses...I will definitely start with the rest of the season today as I have nothing else to watch right now. I just finished the series re-run of "Modern Family" yesterday.πŸ˜†..was watching it again over the past few weeks...and every time you re-watch an episode, you find something terribly funny which you missed last time...πŸ˜†

As I was watching "Suits", I was reminded of another series "White Collar"...maybe because that too has two men working together. Turns out both shows belong to the same network. Have you seen it? The plot is very different ..but it is also a character driven show (crime-buster/comedy/drama). And if you find Patrick Adams handsome, you will be definitely enchanted by Matt Bomer who plays the lead in "White Collar".😳😳 It is also a well-written show ...set in the white collar crime unit within FBI...and has some interesting regular characters. The series ended last year...Which was very sad...
