Ang Lee, haven't watched lot of his stuff, but what I find fascinating is that exploration of different cultures. Back in the good old days of doordarshan, they used to show foreign language movies late at night, especially when some film festival was on. Would watch all those, parents were pretty cool! Then we would have all these critical analysis the next day in college, pretensions to being intellectuals, I think now!😆
I like that aunt of yours!

Sorry this took so long!!

So i read your post groggy eyed a few nights ago - went to sleep and dreamt that i was at the chelsea flower show 😆 which i have never ever been to so i don't know how i knew that that's where i was 😆..
I ijj bhery issmart in sapnon ki duniya i say!!😆

IPL - ya i have the same feeling as you... You know, when it first erupted on the scene i found it wildly exciting. MSD keeping wickets next to Matt Hayden in the slips...the image blew my mind...or Shane Warne in a group huddle with freshly minted bowling lads from rajasthan...how they got a grip on what he was saying to them is still beyond me... but it was wild, and very cool to watch. It felt like borders and boundaries and barriers were being crossed forever... except it turned out that many many seedy shady boundaries were also being crossed here...and suddenly everything started to feel like a sham...the last two years, i don't even recall who won. And please, i don't need filmstars telling me which team to support. On the field, i only want to see my boys in white sweaters playing five day matches... beating the hell out of each other, mind games and all. One days, woh bhi anytime chalega. Bas, enough ho gaya usskey baad.

I don't have a bucket list of my own yet...but wimbledon is done, ladki! A case of reality trumps imagination, totally.

Ah, finally arrived and read all pages. Looked like I would take ever.
Hi Kizh, Issk, looks like the talk has steered towards international movies, which is almost alien to me. But I did see Crouching T ... and I liked it a lot.

Ok, starting with Minnale or Rehna hai tere dil mein in Hindi. The song Vaseegara/ Zara zara was an instant hit in both languages. I like it in Hindi more only because I can understand it word to word.

Kaakka, Kaakka was a superhit, lovely songs. But never saw the movie. Saw Force, the Hindi version on TV though.

Kizh, the original of the Prateik Babbar movie, is Vinaitaandi varuvaya starring Simbu & Trisha. It was simultaneously made in Telugu too starring Naga Chaitanya & Samantha. Somehow I didn't like the story but the songs are good. Funny thing is, at the end of the movie, in the Tamil version, the lovers are separated. Whereas, in the Telugu version, the lovers are united. 😆 Don't know what happened in Hindi. Another funny thing is, the hero who plays the director takes two actors to play the leads in his movie, so in the Tamil version, the hero takes the actors who are in the Telugu version and vice versa. Advantage of shooting both versions together. 😆

Btw, I like this song from the movie,

Before this movie, Gautam M had made another one, starring Surya in double roles of father & son, one of the finest performances by the actor. I liked this movie, quite different. Issk, the song of one of the Tamil vms you had posted on my birthday was from this movie. Again all songs good. Very few Tamil movies I have seen in the theatre, this was one. There's a song in this movie, where they had shot at the Gateway of India and India Gate. When the monuments came up at the backdrop while the actor & dancers were dancing, I found myself staring at the buildings, especially the Taj Mahal hotel, it had been years since I had seen it and for a moment I became nostalgic. Why I am mentioning it is because just after a week later, the 26/11 attack on Mumbai took place. It was very difficult and heartbreaking to watch those domes of the hotel on fire. Such a beautiful and monumental place. Kudos to Ratan Tata for resurrecting it. 👏

Here's the song

And btw girls, Sadma was not dubbed but a remake of Mundram Pirai. Only the Silk Smita- Kamal song was unchanged. What would Gulshan Grover be doing in the Tamil movie otherwise? And yes, the last scene was re-shot too. 😊

Kamal Hassan, very fine actor. But I've seen so many movies of him in 3 languages, I feel I know what type of expressions he will give for what emotions. But, I did like him very much in the Telugu movie Sagara Sangamam, maybe because I love dancing very much. 😊

A few days back, one of the Marathi shows I was watching, came to an end. Storywise, it was supposed to end with the leads's marriage and it did. Of course, there was a bit of dragging as they reached this point, but it didn't go out of bounds. There weren't those so called illogical tracks. Slowly and steadily, in its own pace, the story marched on. And as they neared the end, all loose ends were closed, all matters addressed at. Of course, there were problems pending, but there weren't overlooked or ignored. And thankfully, they didn't take the story beyond the marriage. Point is, when it ended, there weren't questions in mind as to what about this or what about that. As the cast said their byes towards the end, there was little sadness but there was a satisfaction. It wasn't the best serial, but I was happy to have viewed a complete story. Isn't that enough for a TV show?

Isskiya, your AD and SKD looks very interesting!😆
Wimbledon, wow!
My brother and I were huge fans of Stefan Edberg, and I remember we wouldn't get up from our seats when he played a Wimbledon final! Superstition too much😆
I've been to surrounding areas, but not to Wimbledon per se. Someday.
My AD is crazy, and is going to get crazier, so looks like I might become the isstranger! See you around.

Kizh, I loved those tennis matches too. Enjoyed the Edeberg vs Becker ones. Close matches most of them.

Issk, IPL first one was thoroughly enjoyable. Yes, the mingling of players of different countries, was a sight to see. But after the allegations, the charm of IPL went diving down.

Durga,
Thank you for those two songs, love them. Shreya Ghoshal sang Mannipaya, and ARR got someone else to do it in hindi, just doesn't sound the same. And I loved Vaaranam aayiram, Surya was great. You know the father character he played is shown as a malayali and they also mention a home town. It is actually Gautam Menon's hometown (or his father's) and ALSO mine! A bit of trivia for you !😆
Vinnaithandi varuvaaya, I liked because it didn't follow the conventional route, the boy and girl didn't come together, the girl is older than the boy. A cousin of mine is married to a Christian girl, and they didn't have an easy time in the beginning, with her family. So I could totally get what he showed in it. And I thought Simbu and trisha did a good job, haven't watched any other movie of theirs.
I haven't watched Sadma, just assumed its the dubbed version of the tamil.

As for ang lee, an aunt of mine in her early 70's developed a crush on him when life of pi was coming out a couple of year ago. The film was heavily publicised here, of course, and he was interviewed left right and centre...pictures galore, large blow-ups of the quiet subtle low-key man in every tabloids worth it's namak and cheeni. In short, the man was now a household name. Anyway, we were talking about the film one day, and softly she slipped in her take..."isn't he handsome?", she said. I was slightly zapped for a moment...she's only ever said that for amitabh, like centuries ago 😆..."irrfan?", i asked...and before i could follow up with more bak bak, " no ang, the director", she said😆. I LOVED IT!!

i love your aunt already.

handsome men. key to happiness and long life.

tony leung, was it? he was brilliant... i have something for wiry older men slightly falling apart i think hyuk, he felt exciting. she as moving. and the story of a certain kind of love, delicate and difficult to put in a neat little box. that scene where she tells him to run... beauty. and then even more beautiful, dark and celestial... him giving the order to let her be executed.

so beautifully shot. bits and pieces of the movie stay inside the head somewhere.

alas life of pi did not get me. too much before the eyes, too little inside the mind. and the more i see irrfan the less i enjoy his acting. but the guy who acted as the father, he was the husband in ishq vishq and the not dead husband of the widow in ishquiya... not going to google to find his name, i like him.
