Actually in Japan it is like that even now.
girls when they join work have to write and give if they are carreer oriented. Only if they say career oriented they will be taken seriously. Others are calles OL's (office lady) they are just general dogs body doing clerical job and have to make tea for the other staff and for the customers etc. There is disparity in the male and famale salary too. Even today it is like that. Sexual harrassment is rampant. lady's are only sex dolls for them.
