Thats what i wanted to say...a trusted fund and an attorney to take care of it. I am just too disoriented and in pain today to find the right words. There are a whole bunch of rules that stop the person from transferring funds etc, and there are two telugus legal words that define it, but I am not able to remember it. Have heard those a lot of times at home, bcoz thats what happens in our family.

And I would know my daughter needs that extra gift if I know she possess 'special abilities'.

I can't give a proper answer but here's what I'd do (to the best of my ability), Take no dowry, give no dowry, let no one else do it either (like my parents) 😊

Kerala is particularly horrible....

A girl child is born in Kerala,the people go...oh you have a daughter start saving up.
And it is so grasping and dirty, and dowry doesn't end with marriage...If your daughter gives birth to a girl child...bring in more gold.
I once asked Mr Veritas about it..he said if a poor workman gives .25 kg gold then his employer would have to top it...they may add a lot of copper in it...but still appearances matter...it is all social pressure.He knows because he has three older sisters and the remote place he is from ..sticking to conventions was the only way to survive.
And I have to say this daughters are a burden if you don't give them education and the wherewithal to survive on their own..and sadly that is the case in most of India...

And just think of all the gold we're mining in droves! Every newly wed is gifted gold and more and more gold keeps on accumulating. My friend from Kerela was wearing the biggest gold 'chain' I have ever seen. She's tall and the huge thing was touching the floor, she could barely walk, and it was wide too, like the huge garlands that politicians get, BUT it wasn't a dowry, in fact a gift from the grooms family 😲

I think there are always loopholes around that. I have to agree with Smita ji. That is how it starts. I've seen cases where there is not even a demand, yet it's sort of 'understood' that the bride will bring 'gifts'. It's just a polite term for dowry. It's a vicious circle and I don't see any end of it, to be honest.

Things are improving though, as RW ji mentioned. Even I have seen cases when the groom's family would actually give the bride expensive gifts. It's a good step in the right direction. Still, it reamains a fact that there are so many girls who don't get a good prospect only because their parents can't afford to pay for their dowries.
