The Casual Vacancy
To Neil ' She flipped..
Barry Fairbrother did not want to go out to dinner. He had endured a thumping headache for most of the weekend and was struggling to make a deadline for the local newspaper.
However, his wife had been a ' 'Final call for passengers boarding the..' the loud sound echoed as she shut close and left a sigh then made her way to boarding. Even today she looked for answers to her existence, it's been a complete year she did anything that can be remotely called living, all she did the past year was to survive every passing second. Ever since she got back from Delhi, she did everything in her power to find him then later forget him and then finally kill him out of her life.
A voice disturbed her deep thoughts as she roared at the news.
Mam you are the last to board the flight and due to some technical problem you will have to adjust to the economy class for an hour before we shift you back to the business class.
She composed herself before loosing to the scenario, she always wanted to control over everything and herself but now she had learned how to handle situations rather control. Okay, not a second more then an hour, she said giving the voice the ultimatum as it gasped and nodded. She walked through the narrow wing to her destined seat and sat down with the thought, few things are not meant to be just like me and.. We are so meant to be, I lo.. the loud voice trailed as she turned towards the source of sound behind and gave a deadly look and the boy gulped the rest and immediately turned to his girl as she gave a, what I thought to be a stupid grin and mouthed a sorry and came to rescue of who seemed to be her boyfriend.
She slightly shook her head and got back to perusing me but I soon found her loosing herself to her past, a place she visited time after time. What she told him before the dance camp had disturbed the living chords of both their life and the music henceforth was dark and depressing. We are not meant to be Swayam, why don't you understand? We are not happy to be in a relationship and why feel sorry then to let it be. I am complicated and I don't think I deserve you.
A drop of tear on me from those guilty eyes, told me he was dead with in and all he could say to her was, I set you free and your wish is my command.
It's time for me to go Swayam, but before I leave I want to tell you how blessed and light I feel to have finally shared my inhibitions with you. I am happy to have told you what importance you own in my life. I think I, I.. She felt his fingers on her lips as he hushed and gestured a no.
I don't think I can let go of you after I hear what I think you'd say. I will wait for your return and we will celebrate, "to us".
She kissed his finger giving in to the moment, lowering her gaze she thought of her actions and blushed as he smiled and scooped her up in his arms. Her petite frame went rigid in his arms as he twirled her along. He carried her to the car and whispered in her ears, please don't keep me waiting for long. She got in the back seat and raised the sad window, which took away the best view of her life, the last view to her life.
The memories of him, the very first time their eyes met is what she closes them to each night. Just like the monsoon rains her eyes flooded the pain. His touch and glare always left her vulnerable, she felt loved but at times few words cut deep with in. What importance do you have in my life, I failed to realize and when I finally did my life comes crashing by, what is love? Who are you? Why me? How I wish I knew before, the answers lied with in me or was just the mirrored me.
She heard the music alright, but today she was dancing in sync with his heartbeats promising the promise she made but her body being the weaker of the two, was starting to give up, the hands not finishing what they start made the moves seem lethargic, soon the knees gave in as the pace slowed down, her heartbeats increased and vision blurred, still in no mind to give in she with great deal finished the said time of dance and took the bow to the cheering crowd, her faint eyes stuck on to him calling for help as she finally gave in with a thud on the floor. Everything faded except his cry of help as he carried her to the tent the make shift hospital of the event. With no memory of the rest she opened her eyes to his worried face.
He stood up straight in a jerk and tied back his hands from moving in her direction, he was restless and hesitantly cupped her face and cried, why Sharon? Why? What was the need to dance?
"Your Promise", she reasoned
He mentally slapped himself for the choice of words of the promise, unintentionally yet again he proved to be the wrong in her life.
It was not important Sharon
"To me it was", she gleamed momentarily before the last part of the promise of winning, took the shine away.
Swayam Shikawat is important to Sharon Rai Prakash and always was and will be. Her emotions echoed the place and reached his, breaking his reluctance as he took her in a loving embrace.
His touch and presence crushed her insecurities like a dry autumn leaf, his love gave her the colors like the dropping temperature to the trees and she melted in his embrace like the first snow at its place.
She had never before felt what it meant to be welcomed in someone's life.
The image shattered just as the loud music reached her ears as a part of her rejoiced to the music and her eyes unintentionally scowled at the owner of the source. "pehla nasha pehla khumar followed by the subscriber can not be reached was the mantra she slept, came alive to and led her life with.
Tears were the only answer she had to all those questions her active mind raised, her heart failing to do the job the eyes dwelled by. How she wished her tears could take the form of words and reach his heart.
The final year in St.Louis was never the same without her loyal ACS by her side, with no one to control her temper she distanced herself from everyone.
It was not like she loved to niggle and criticize everyone, she had an eye for detail, taste and cared much for achieving perfection, which made her stand often ruthless and cold. The pain she endured only added fuel to her remorse, the reason why she decided to shift base to Newyork. The tiring journey ended as she waited for clearance and flipped through to the last.
She read the last few lines before concluding, The END, or so as she thought but the new hope begin as she heard a much familiar and life saving voice.
Interesting read, the voice said, flashing his signature smile, she stood their fearing it be the work of her heart with reluctance fumbling at her fingers she moved them ahead and when she hit the point, the touch caressed her.
The smile acted as her personal drug to soften the rough surface of all her loss at love at once. Her lips failing the job the eyes took over with an intentional smile.
Now this is the real end or the beginning I am talking about.
Something tells me I was the best read of her life, how do I know you may ask?
All she did was flipped through me hardly reading the lines but reading between the lines and essaying the meaning to her self, book, her life.
The End
Not your usual OS was it, i did not follow a set sequence with it and wanted it to be like the few pages from a novel at few intervals.
I am sure you all guessd the person to be Swayam who with his smile and voice made his way back to her life. But why he left and will Sharon be this easy to convince is a different story all together and another novel to narrate 😳
