See, kids, right now there is the Daadi excuse Chandra has ready at hand, for sticking to Nandini like a gum plaster.
Incidentally, he seems to have forgotten all about her supposed pash on Malayaketu, and she about his amar prem for Helena. Both topics seem to have become verboten (German for forbidden) post their Pataalgram excursion.
To revert, the problem will arise only if ( a huge IF!) and when Daadi lugs her portly self back to Piplivan. Then this excuse will vanish, and all those most ill-considered promises Chandra has made to Helena - of their having a wonderful life together post-Daadi- will all descend on him at once, like a whole barnful of chickens coming home to roost. 😆
One has also to remember is that these promises were given out of his free will, not coerced out of him in a drunken stupor, like the Las Vegas marriages! The fool will then end up between a rock and a hard place. So my bet is that Daadi will never leave Pataliputra, no matter how much you gnash your teeth, , my poor Anne! 😉
As for Sandhya's cost accounting about the respective insults Chandra has received from Helena and Nandini, it is very interesting but pointless. Chandra just does not have any amorous inclinations towards Helena, and as love, or even a physical relationship, was not part of their deal, he feels no obligation to accommodate her now that she has decided that she loves him and only him.
By now, even that reluctant sense of duty he felt towards her has vanished. So, even if she had not made that very unfortunate statement about her having made him the King, nothing would have changed in that respect.
Why should he now go and spend nights with her if he does not feel like it? Anne, your take on his sensing the very real fakeness of Helena is most perceptive, but even if she had been genuine, nothing would have changed in his response to her overtures. He just does not feel anything for her, period.
I also agree with your analysis of Helena, and of the nature of the "love" she now says she feels for Chandra. Basically, Helena is like one of those creepers that will strangle anything it clings to. Chandra is much better off at a safe distance from her.😉
To revert, come to think of it, bar that imli episode and a couple of other sequences, he hardly seems to bother about Durdhara either. Not that I blame him. Durdhara will reduce his brains to mush in one hour flat with her babbling of kalejas. 😡
The cardinal fact is that he has never been in love before, and he has fallen hard for Nandini now. So I am not surprised that he has no inclination to spend any time, not to speak of other things, with his other two wives. Nor would I blame him. Young men in love are like that only! The heart has its reasons, and all that.
As for Helena, she has foolishly abandoned the one solid hold she had over him, that of being a political aide to Chanakya, which she had till he became Magadhasamrat. And equally foolishly made it clear that all she is really interested in is queening it over the palace. Chandra has no objection to that, but if she wants sole proprietary rights over him - and make no mistake, that is what she wants! - well, that is a non-starter.
Right now, Chandra and Nandini seem to be in a world of their own, and clearly no one else has any place there. This Nandini deserves that, and so I have no problems with the so-called neglect of his other wives, of whom Durdhara hardly minds it!
In any case, at least judging from Maharana Udai Singh's obsession with his third wife in Maharana Pratap (though he continued to have high regard for his first queen, who was also the mother of his heir), Jalal in Jodha Akbar, and Jahangir and, even more so, Shahjahan in real life. this kind of behaviour seems to have been more the royal norm than the exception. I have read that Mumtaz died during childbirth basically because she would not let Shahjahan visit any of his other queens, and so she had a child every year and died bearing the umpteenth one!
But I agree fully with Prem about the royal family's incomprehensible neglect of Chhaya and her condition. Not only the two old biddies, Daadi and Mura, or the nutty Durdhara, but Chandra - which is unbelievable - and just as odd, Nandini too. She has not asked Chandra a single question about Chhaya since after the walling in charade. 😲
