Hearts and Minds - Chandra Nandini mantras

Hi Folks,

or is it Heart vs Mind. The unambiguous point being made is that the two leads are approaching life (and each other) from two different standpoints. Of course as things progress this will need to be modified for it to have credibility. But for now, Episode 6 did manage to present Chandra and Nandini as two people in no doubt of their identities and destinies.

- Chandra and Chanakya have already merged into one persona in two bodies. Both standing above the sprawling metropolis and Chanakya decreeing what he wants to happen. He isn't just the king maker. He maps out the destiny of Bharat. Sees it in his mind's eye and declares it. Chandra is the agent he will use to accomplish it.

- Chandra seems to have a talent for the supernatural even before Chanakya teaches him how to tread water. Didn't he defy gravity while getting honey on a cliff. So Chanakya is just tapping into an already activated skill.

- While being trained by Chanakya and waiting for an opportune moment of Chanakya's choosing to get to the throne, Chandra will play every TV supernatural hero from Arrow to possibly Thor, Iron Man and beyond. Fighting crime. Fighting for the underdog. Fighting for justice. This guerrilla warfare doesn't seem to be bothering Nand and his cohorts. It could be that Chandra will have to march into the palace again during a jashn to get any kind of attention.

- We may have rolled our eyes with Chandra constantly saying love is not something he has time for but I did take note that once you decide to embark on mastering your soul, you do have to talk to yourself (even before you fall asleep) - Mind over heart, mind over heart.

- Nandini's guru' may be her father but it looked to me that it was Nand who had to listen to her reasoning. She is all heart. But when she is in a sword fight and accidentally ( or maybe not) nicks Nand's hand and draws blood, she doesn't drop the sword and run to him. No she stands her ground and waits for her father to acknowledge who won that contest. Heart of steel?

- Upon hearing ( over hearing) discussions about the need for her to marry, Nandini turned and ran and ran and ran. Okay I tried hard to forget Sanjay Leela Bhansali movies. But this kind of product placement is unavoidable it seems.

- Nandini has supernatural powers of her own. Eyes and ears and senses and radar that allow her to detect any prani that's in danger in her realm (or even beyond?). She has also conquered the element of water and rescues a grateful kid goat.

- One doesn't get to be sure of their paths unless it's drilled into them by others as well as honed and practiced daily. Hence we had to listen to Chandra and Nandini repeating things ad infinitum. It is necessary. Really it is.

- While Chanakya has decided what the Lakshya of Chandra and he and all viewers should aim for, we can be confident it will take a very roundabout route to attain it. Chanakya has patience. Do we?.

Here's to some enjoyable viewing. (and some tongue in cheek reviews)

Yayy I am first to respond to Chitti's post - although by reservation. Thanks for bringing a different perspective, one separated from both Jodha Akbar and Baahubali (you don't refer to either and rightly so).

I finally watched the episode and have been watching since beginning day, more out of curiousity of how the story will unfold.

I agree that the thing that has been built well so far is this heart vs. mind dichotomy and what is driving it. Whether it is the circumstances of how they were born, how raised, how educated, there is a clear distinction and contrast shown.

I particularly think the point on Nandini's heart when she hurts her dad in the sword fight is spot on.

I think to your point on repetition, this serial not only uses repetition, but almost to the extreme of hyperbole. I think it is done intentionally to set the scene for the characters and their marriage-love story.

Rajat's opening scene is overdone but so is Mura's spewing anger of revenge - it is just to ingrain us in the setting, everything is overdone.

As you also know, Baahubali is one of my favorite movies, so I will take this as a tribute and not everyone has the budget to do it at the scale of the movie.

I actually believe after the characters and we have a hang of it, they may actually tone down. But let's see. But you have to remember the typical viewer doesn't spend as much attention to the episodes like us, so repition may be needed to get the themes clear. Also, this story is not as well known as JA (courtesy Ashutosh Gowariker, etc.) so people need to understand the dynamics between Padmanand- Chandragupt- Chanakya- Nandini, etc.

I think the other key is not comparing it with Jodha Akbar- my mom never watched JA and she is probably enjoying Chandra Nandini more than I imagined she would.

And I fall into the trap of referring to JA by saying not to 😆 But, I am curious of how the story of Chandra Nandini unfolds.

But I m sorry dear because I have not so impressed with both leads entry. 🥱
Seriously yaar he is Chandra Gupta , a human being , not a super hero or south films hero. 😡
Yaar vo normal bhi fight kar sakata hain
And I liked much more better jodha's entry than nandani 😉
Jis tarike ke promos dikhaye the , utana good episode nahi tha.
Vaise main nahi dekhati but because of my friend I saw it.
But I m hell...

🥱

well Magal you were right. It has toned down in the very next episode. No repetitions.😲

The supernatural has given way to a very modern 21st century take on a Magadha princess.

But seriously...I am completely happy with Nandini so far. Shwetha has given her an energy and verve that isn't overdone. She has a hearty throaty laugh. She tackles every moment with an endearing ability to be one with the situation. I haven't seen a tv heroine this confident in a long while.

Alexander (the Great?) on the other hand has invaded the show with so much treasure to bribe the locals with? . And why? For the land? As far as I remember, he was struggling to keep the morale up among his men and had little to pay them with by the time he reached the Indus. His obsession to find and reach the ends of the earth was also coupled with a tendency to destroy whole cities and set up his own. But here he looks suspiciously like a Billionaire with an obsession for mitti.

Chanakya has fast forwarded Chandra's training. The Gurukul is so yesterday. Now the real action minus the zero gravity abilities begin.

And what a great face-to-face scene for Chandra-Nandini.
