Part of this I feel...is his attention to detail! I'm sure whenever he is presented the role he has his own questions to ask at the very beginning about the background and the mannerisms of the character, which he always keeps at the back of his mind when he's playing the character. Take Onu for instance...HC knew that Devarsh would be playing his younger version, and when HC finally enters as Onu, he lets you see the difference between the chota Onu and the bada one, while STILL ensuring that at key points he reminds us of Devarsh! For somethin like that you require more than talent...you require an inclination to analyse a character and thereby interpret his body language. Another case in point is Mohan's return to the Galla house. By this time in the story we've been given hints about Mohan's life in London and prior to that, how Baapji treated him, how he's changed. We're aware of how tempting a prospect freedom was for him and why he grabs it with both hands. And the smug look he gives to Baapji communicates THAT as well! It's not just a 'spoilt brat' playing smarty-pants with his grandfather...it's a boy who has become a man, setting a silent challenge for the man who had stifled him from the time he was in his nappies, and that one look says it!
In some cases HC doesn't really have the script's support sometimes: KDM for instance made Prem the typical hero scriptwise - the Ram of the family, very much fashioned on Mihir Virani - and for a good reason: he was going to die in a few months after all, and then the REAL jodi would step forward 😆 On top of which, Prem was too perfect for many actors to even think of nuances...but can any of us imagine Prem now without the choti choti aadatein that HC channeled into him? It's tiny but hard to miss, the way he holds Heer's hand, the way he gives her a look, a slight inflection in the way he says Heer's name.Same with his romance with Taani...and here I daresay he has a tougher job. Here APK and he had to recreate what PraDev had left behind...while redefining it and making it fit into an adult context. You saw flashes of the younger kids in BOTH of them, but besides that you also saw desire...you also saw an understanding of the love they shared which the kids lacked...you also saw their deep desparate denial of that love in the fear of being rejected again. Plus, you needed to love Onu even as he rejected Taani, and HC made sure we did that.
