Who will play Buddha? That was the big question, but the TV show makers managed to keep this under wraps so far. Now, they are ready to unveil the face of Buddha with a royal launch in Sarnath (the holy place in Varanasi) today, because Buddha had a deep connect with the place.

TOI has found out that it's a young aspiring actor from Jaipur, Himanshu Soni, who has been chosen to essay the character. And he has gone through his fair share of training, grooming sessions and has also attended a 10-day vipassana programme to get under the skin of the character.

Says producer Dr BK Modi, chairman of Spice Studio, "We auditioned scores of actors, both seasoned and newcomers, but Himanshu fit the character's description like a glove. Out of the 32 characteristics of Buddha, Himanshu met 28. His down-to-earth and likable personality was key for the character's successful portrayal. We put him through training for martial arts, Tai Chi, dialogue delivery and acting to mould him into Prince Siddharth's character and he's come out polished, shining like a prince."

Himanshu is naturally excited and looking forward to his debut on TV. "It is an honour to play a character as significant and important as Buddha. I have undergone rigorous training which made it easier for me to understand the body language and depth of the character and persona of Prince Siddharth as well as his journey to becoming Buddha."
Buddha airs every Sunday at 11 am.

Actor who was finally zeroed in to play Buddha on TV

Finding the right face and skills to fit a role is always a strenuous task

Ask the makers of a television show based on Gautam Buddha's life, who have been on the lookout for a young actor to don the Enlightened One's character on the small screen.

Himanshu Soni will feature in Buddha

The producers of the show found their Buddha in Himanshu Soni to essay the character of the grown-up prince who eventually turns into a saint. "It was not at all an easy task to find the perfect person to play this challenging role.

The creative team was in discussions with many people and was in two minds whether to opt for a fresh face or an established actor. Himanshu was among the many actors who auditioned for the role and was chosen after a lot of debate between the channel and production house," says a unit member.

However, it wasn't a cakewalk for the Rajasthan-born actor either. "He had to go through a rigorous training and makeover of sorts. He was asked to do a yoga course, martial arts apart from workouts in gym. He even completed 10 days of a Vipasana course, that included maun vrat at Igatpuri," adds the source.

According to producer Dr B K Modi, the wait was worth the result. "For the role of Buddha, we had auditioned several actors both seasoned as well as newcomer. But Himanshu had suited the role naturally and he was put into a very rigorous training. He's come out shining like a prince."
