I tried reading Emma by Jane Austen a couple of years ago, couldn't read more than three chapters. But i guess i was very young so will definitely try to read it again.

I had Jane Eyre two years back for literature. I didn't like the story much but the descriptions were fantastic.

Little Women was nice, not so sure about its sequels though.

To start with - you can probably read Anne of Green Gables - I adore this book! Its a simple and endearing story. There is actually a series that follows with Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island etc.
As for other classics:
Pride and Prejudice (love love love)
Emma
Persuasion (love love love)
You can also try some Mark Twain books:
The adventures of Tom Sawyer
The adventures of Huckleberry finn
These are the more simple and loved classics. If you can get through them, you'll be hooked on the Classics. Don't discount the classics, esplecially the likes of Jane Austen and authors of her era, the language may need a little growing accostomed to in the beginning, but once you get into the novels, you'll not notice a thing.
Have fun reading!

I'm planning on reading Wutherin Heights!

They're difficult. 😆 The English we speak and the one those lengendry writers have penned down are contrasting. Besides, not every body can read a novel with such tough English.

I tried reading Great Expectations and miserably failed reason being - I couldn't understand it. But I have read almost all of Jane Austen's novel, they're less difficult and they're a complete package. Beautifully written, great plot and one of a kind characters drawn. 😳

I am totally into books, and old English or new doesn't bother me much. It has to be well written and I'd read it. 😃

Hello Guyz,

Mugdha here...
This is my first post here on Book talk forum,

Never knew this forum existed 😆
Until today, when I started out exploring IF...

Anyway, the one book in the classic's section,
which was the first book i read at length and liked immensely was

"Little Women" By Louisa May Alcott

I truly loved the way all the characters, esp. the lead four,
and their interpersonal relationships are portrayed
I like Jo amongst all the four, who is a reflection of the authoress Louisa in a way,

Few of you, might find it a bit girly,
But it is one of the most memorable classics
and the first in my Favourite book's list

I would definitely suggest you all to read it,

Cheers,

Mugdha

If you're starting off the classics for pleasure, then I suggest starting off easy and finding authors you enjoy reading.

I recommend this initial list:

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
Black Beauty by Anna Sewell
The Swiss Family Robinson
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
Around the World in 80 Days
Catcher in the Rye - JD Salinger - You may connect with this book easily - the narrator is much younger and very sardonic
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell - Yes, this is a LONG book, but the language is pretty standard and commonly used even today by literary authors.

The Anne of Green Gables series is lovely. Little Women by the same author is also excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed those books when I was younger.

P.S. You can try reading the abridged versions - they're a little easier if you're having a hard time getting into the originals.
