Sure! Classics are classics for a reason... sure I don't like all of them just like I don't like all of the current novels... :)

shellyt - oh i read anne of green gables when i was young, its a sweet book. ive heard of the anne of the island but not the former one..yet to read those two!..
pride and prejudice is <3 as u said!..totally loved it..will try n read the others u mentioned..n well yeah, jane austen, but the problem is never find her books!..
thank you!

There are websites where you can read her books online or even download it as a pdf document, so you can read it offline or even print them out. I know its not the same as actully having a book in had, but if you really want to read them you can probably try that.
Oh and if you loved Pride and Prejudice you should definitely read Persuasion - that is my second fav Jane Austen novel and PaP

Recently I read "To Kill a Mocking Bird" and loved it...so maybe you could give it a try...
then.....(and this one's my fav novel so far)... "Gone With The Wind" by Margaret Mitchell...

btw what's the definition of a "classic"? i think old novels that became bestsellers in their time, right? i'm not so sure....

^ It's not being best-sellers because a lot of the classics actually failed when they were released (Wuthering Heights comes to mind) and their literary value was realized much later. I think the general definition of classic varies but at the core, it's a book that typically has a lot of literary features which is admired by critics and presents a social commentary that is subtle.

Like someone mentioned, Nabokov's Lolita is really good if you don't get offended too easily. However, I think "Pale Fire" is easily his best book. The character of John Shade and the way the narrative is told is particularly fascinating.
Other than the ones already mentioned, I'd add John Fowles' "The French Lieutenant's Woman" and Flaubert's "Madame Bovary".

Hi,
You could try
1) The Secret Countess by Iva Abbotson
2) Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
3) The Musician's daughter by Susanne Dunlap
4) North & South by Elizabeth Gaskell
Jane Austen:
1) Pride & Prejudice
2) Emma
3) Persuasion
I find these books intruiging and sensible. Hope you will like them.
