Even after braving all the controversy that took place on its selection, Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Eklavya-The Royal Guard is out of the Oscar race even before things began to heat up. Chopra's film failed to make the cut on the final nine short listed films in the Best Foreign Language Film category. We asked some of India's most prominent filmmakers where India is going wrong in its quest for an Oscar.

The fault is in the selection process. It is held in Mumbai and it only panders to Bollywood box office hits. Small films from Kerala, Assam and other parts of India are ignored. Independent and small filmmakers are ignored. It's only about box office hits here. If you look at the films that have made it in the past it was never about them being the biggest box office hit of that country – what mattered was that they showed good cinema. I believe the selection process shows that we lack basic cinematic sense. Filmmakers like Satyajit Ray whose film screenings have long lines abroad only gets about five people here and never ever have any of his films been sent to the Oscars! Why?? Till we continue to do that we can forget about the Oscars.

We won't ever get far in the Oscar race till the selection process is reviewed. We need a system that is unbiased and allows India to put its best foot forward. It's not like our films are not good enough – we have the content, the technology, the brains…all of it to make award winning films but if we send things that don't deserve to go then we won't win. I mean was anyone honestly surprised to see Eklavya not make the cut?

I don't understand. Tomorrow you might say why we aren't going to the UNO or to the Moon? Everything has a particular method or procedure. Getting to the Oscars is not that easy - a few years back we were at step 2, today we are at step 6 and then we will reach step 8 and then we will get to the Oscars which will be step 10. I can tell you that India is growing very fast and we are improving every year and so in a few years we will get to the Oscars too. I don't understand the need to get so hyper about the Oscars or to compare ourselves to America every time.

This debate has been going for years now. It's unfortunate that we don't make it far in the Oscars but that's because our selection system is wrong. As a member of the Hindi film fraternity I am saying that you need to look beyond just Hindi films. Why aren't we looking at filmmakers from Kerala and Tamil Nadu? We need to look at regional cinema a lot more. The whole system needs to be reviewed and the jury needs to have proper representation from all across the country.
