A diva's doli

Ash's bidaai ceremony will be held on April 21 at La Mer, after which Ash will leave for Pratiksha on her red doli. (The doli costs Rs 75,000 and took 22 days to put together)

Okay, so the big day is here. The most talked-about wedding of the decade is all set to take place this evening at around 5.30 pm, according to the mahurat fixed by Amitabh Bachchan's pundits, who have specially been flown down from Benares.

We got hold of an exclusive picture of the biggest wedding accessory of them all: the doli. "No one knows that the actual bidaai ceremony will take place on April 21. The procession will go from La Mer to Abhishek's house, Pratiksha. The Bachchan doli is silver which will be used after the wedding. However, Aishwarya will travel on 21st morning in a red doli. The doli costs around Rs 75,000 and it took around 22 days to construct. The design was finalised by the Rais a long time back but they wanted some changes, especially in the seating area. They also wanted the handle to have metallic sticks with golden wires. The doli looks stunning now," says our source.

Table set for dinner at La Mer

The mehendi ceremony happened yesterday afternoon at Ash's La Mer apartments in Bandra. The catering for the same is being done by ITC Grand Maratha Sheraton.

Our source, an insider at La Mer, says, "The decorations are being done by National Decorators from Vile Parle. For the mehendi, a huge air-conditioned banquet hall has been constructed in the compound where the guests can dine. A special tunnel-like entrance has been designed to keep the paparazzi from peeping in. The banquet hall will be in use for at least three days after the wedding, since guests have been flown in from all over."

A special table was constructed after its design was passed by Aishwarya's brother Aditya. "Every single thing has had to been 'passed' by the entire family from the decoration tapestries to sitting arrangements, down to the cutlery on the tables," says our source.

'Bunt'y, baraatis & bhelpuri!

It's going to be a wedding of mixed customs for Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. The ceremony will begin with Bunt rituals, after which North Indian customs will prevail

Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan will be joined in holy matrimony today at Prateeksha. The time for the baraat is 4 pm, while the shubh mahurat for the wedding ceremony is 5.30 pm. According to an insider, the couple will have not one but two traditional rituals for their marriage. Adds our source, "Ash's mother, Vrinda Rai, has obtained traditional mango leaves from a district called Kasargod in Mangalore for a ritual from the bride's side. Ash will wear a kanjeevaram saree for this particular ceremony." Mixed customs The first ritual will begin with Bunt customs, a South Indian community to which Aishwarya belongs. However, a major chunk of the wedding and saat pheras will be according to North Indian customs. Another source adds, "Rituparno Ghosh (the Bengali director) and Jaya Bachchan have planned a Bengali style pooja that will be performed with Ash. It's a ritual done by the mother-in-law to welcome the bride into the family, by buying her a nova (a gold wrist band). Rituparno picked up the bracelet on Jaya's behalf. Indira Bhaduri, Jaya's mother, has also been buying sarees and other accessories for Ash." Amitabh and the other men in the family will be sporting traditional pink turbans. "They've called special people from Jaipur who are experts at tying turbans. The turbans will be worn mainly by the groom's family, as Ash's family is not North Indian." Like every North Indian wedding, Abhishek will also have to endure a haldi ceremony that will be performed at Prateeksha, hours before the actual mahurat.

Ex and the city Both of Aishwarya Rai's high profile former boyfriends, Salman Khan and Viveik Oberoi, left the city earlier this week. The actors have chosen to be out of Mumbai on the day she ties the knot with Abhishek Bachchan. Close friends of Salman reveal that he has "gone for personal work to Dubai." Khan's present girlfriend Katrina Kaif is also in Dubai shooting for Abbas Mastan's Race. Viveik Oberoi too headed to Dubai last week, after wrapping up the shoot for Sanjay Gupta's Shootout at Lokhandwala. He is currently visiting his ancestral home in Nampally (close to Chennai) and has been joined by his parents there. The Oberoi family is expected to return to Mumbai on April 22, two days after Ash's wedding, to celebrate the birthday of Viveik's mother Yashodhara. Post that, Viveik is expected to shoot for a music video for Akbar Khan's Fool And Final.

What Ash's mehendi function was like

Thursrday was low-key at the Bachchan residence.

There was more action at Aishwarya's building, La Mer than at Bachchan houses Jalsa and Prateeksha. Thursday was the mehendi, which takes place at the bride's house. The mehendi was brought from the groom's house to the bride's. But first Aishwarya's brother, Aditya, his wife and mama brought the shagun to Abhishek's house.

Later Shweta Nanda, Abhishek's sister, applied mehendi on Abhishek's hand. Then Jaya Bachchan, Shweta Nanda and Amar Singh set off for Aishwarya's home with shagun, mehendi and haldi in a white Mercedes and a Volvo full of women.

For those of who don't know, 15 kg of henna was brought from Sojat, Rajasthan for the mehendi ceremony. Apparently this is the best mehendi available in India, which appears as a particular shade of maroon.

After some rituals at La Mer, the entourage returned to a small dinner function at Jalsa, attended by a few close friends like Sanjay Dutt, JP Dutta, Karan Johar, Kajol, and Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash, sons of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan.

On Thursday, Prateeksha was cleaned up and the decorations removed from the gate -- making way for a new design for Friday's festivities. Around 50 huge bundles of orange and yellow marigolds arrived in a tempo for decorating the mandap, where the function will be held

Apparently, Aishwarya will move from La Mer to Prateeksha on Friday, while the Bachchans will go with the baraat from Jalsa to Prateeksha, where the grand wedding will take place at 5:30 pm.

Ash-Abhi wedding: The festivities start

he first day of the elaborate three-day wedding saw a lot of excitement at the Bachchan homes, Prateeksha and Jalsa, even as the Rai residence was relatively quiet.

Fans thronged the gates, hoping for a glimpse of their favourite stars, while the security worked twice as hard keeping people at bay. After a whole day of waiting, we were treated to a Mercedes, which drove up to Jalsa at about 5pm. Aishwarya Rai was rumoured to be in it.

The car stayed behind the gates of Jalsa for a few minutes, and then proceeded towards Prateeksha.

Eyebrows were raised, as a silver doli was spotted at the Bachchan residence.

As a worker commented, 'the wedding decor is grander than the Taj Mahal.'

Is this Ash-Abhishek's new home?

It is not known if this building on the left, NaiVedya, will be the home of the soon-to-be-wed Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan, but there may be reason to believe it is.

NaiVedya, a rather old structure until three years ago, is undergoing brisk renovation.

Located at Carter Road in the suburban area of Bandra, Mumbai, the building is a 10-minute drive from Ash's current home on the 12th floor of the La Mer building, where Sachin Tendulkar also lives.

When photographer Rajesh Karkera was about to shoot a picture of the building, the watchman said, "Please don't shoot a photograph; it does not belong to Abhishek Bachchan."

A strange comment considering we had not even asked who the building belonged to.

Further enquiries revealed the watchman was tired of answering questions if the building belonged to the Guru star. He indicated it was owned by someone settled abroad.

"I don't know who the owner is except that it is not Abhishek Bachchan," the watchman said.

Abhishek's parents Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan own two bungalows in Mumbai -- Prateeksha and Jalsa in the city's suburban Juhu area.

Abhishek arrives on horseback for wedding

After much partying, rituals and tradition, Abhishek Bachchan is finally getting ready to marry Aishwarya Rai at his father's home, Prateeksha.

The road outside his home is filled with fans, media and onlookers, as one of the biggest weddings this year is about to start in a few minutes.

Ash arrived with her mother Brinda at 2:10 pm, in a grey Mercedes car decorated wtih roses and white flowers. The car pulled right into Prateeksha and a posse of security guards surrounding the vehicle so that the media could not get a glimpse of the bride. Ash's brother Aditya followed in another car, while the rest of her family arrived in a Volvo.

Apparently, the bride has chosen a maroon Kangeevaram sari for her special day.

The bungalow has been decorated in South Indian fashion, with orange and yellow marigold flowers, and banana leaves and fruits. Ash, for those who don't know, hails from the Bunt community.

The Ash-Abhishek wedding

Amitabh Bachchan's close friend Amar Singh was among the first to arrive at Prateeksha. Other first arrivals were filmmakers J P Dutta (on the sets of whose film Umrao Jaan, Ash and Abhishek apparently fell in love) and Romesh Sharma (who directed Amitabh in Dil Jo Bhi Kahey), Shammi Kapoor and his wife, and Danny Denzongpa.

Band players, in white uniforms and colourful turbans, played loudly, while traffic outside the bungalow virtually came to a standstill. Later, dancers, dressed in traditional Punjabi wear, joined them, and danced as the Bachchans arrived at Prateeksha.

Abhishek, in a gold-embroidered white sherwani, made his way on horseback for a portion of the distance from Jalsa to Prateeksha. Shweta's son Agastya sat astride with him, while Amitabh, Jaya and Shweta danced to film songs like Kajra re and Aaj Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai.

Later, the Bachchan family got into a Volvo, and travelled the rest of the distance to Prateeksha in that.

The male members of the baraat like Sahara Group Chairman Subroto Roy, Ajay Devgan, A R Rahman, Ritiesh Deshmukh, Ram Gopal Varma, Sanjay Dutt and Abu Jaani wore orange turbans; while Anil Ambani wore a red one. Tina Ambani, Dimple Kapadia, Sonali Bendre and Shweta's mother-in-law Ritu Nanda also arrived in one of the buses.

Preity Zinta arrived with Ness Wadia.

Kajol, who seems to be close to the Bachchan family, arrived in a mehndi-coloured sari with a blue shimming border. Ashutosh Gowarikar, who is presently directing Ash in the historical Jodha Akbar, arrived with his wife Sunita.

Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray arrived much later with his wife.

By the time the baraat had entered Prateeksha, the crowds went ballistic, and police were forced to raise their sticks to control the crowds.

Ram Gopal Varma was one of the first guests to exit.
