But my research got me an article, so I don't need your profound 'knowledge' anymore smiley16 (the 144 years only refers to the 'perfect' constellation of Jupiter, Sun and Moon which is special for this year's Maha Kumbh)

So you're not a fan of ad hominem attacks. But not very consistent about it; you don't seem to mind them when it suits your POV.

Anyway yes ' Maha' kumbh is a made up concept. And what those websites says about a once in 144 yrs alignment of planets is BS as well. Almost as if everything people believe in isn't true.

There's the Kumbh mela that happens every three years in one of the four cities. The astrological significance is the journey of Jupiter through all the signs of the Zodiac. Once in 6 years there's an Ardha Kumbh ( Semi kumbh ) and once in 12 there's the poorna ( complete ) kumbh. Now some people refer to the poorna kumbh as maha Kumbh. That's it. One of the theories to support the once in 144 years Maha Kumbh thing is that 12 cycles Jupiter 's zodiac hopping would amount to 144 years. That is not true. Jupiter takes around 11.86 years to complete one cycle which means it's not precisely 12 years. So 11 86 x 12 would be around 142 years ( not mathy enough to get it down to the decimals ) and not 144 years.

Now the alignment of the planets thing. Too many kumbh melas including the last one at Prayag have been dubbed the maha Kumbh. Unless there are several planets ,like several venues for the kumbh ,this is not possible .

The Kumbh mela has been used by politicians ( and not just the BJP ) to no end. Thousands of crores are being laundered. And there's been a lot of narrative building for ongoing and upcoming elections. For an event that's important to the faithful all you see are hoardings of the double engine guys everywhere. For those alone crores have been spent. They're making themselves synonymous with faith. And they have the added advantage of turning legitimate criticism into paranoia and persecution complex which means more votes . The water is extremely polluted. There are insane levels of fecal coli, on some days as high ax 40+ times over the normal limit. Imagine an 800 sq ft pool filled with 200 people. Would you want to get in? When people question Yogi and bring up health hazards he says Hindus are bring targeted even though Shankaracharya himself has criticised the goings on heavily. Yogi claimed his administration had made preparations for 100 crore people. By the time it hit 40 to nobody's surprise there were stampedes and the water was poopy. The event has been nothing but a farce , a photo OP for all kinds of people . While the pious are praying ,the greedy are preying.

Just imagine I would have written what you wrote, dear... I've stopped to write some harsh realities - for obvious reasons... (I also got to know from where the 144 years had come of which I wasn't aware (!) before smiley2as this number didn't belong to my knowledge about the 'kumbh-history').

Just by reading the title, I honestly would not like to judge someone's motivation.

Fact is that a lot of the criticism I read about (not only) this year's Kumbh Mela shouldn't get ignored in order to paint a (religious) picture that may only be a sad reflection of the ancient purpose.

Can you please move this discussion to politics/debate forum?

Ps-@mods, I am not a regular IF user but whenever I come here open a thread to participate, all see is few people's passive aggressive (not related to topic) political discussion, which is off putting. I believe others also feels the same too considering the low traction on the site.

Why not contribute in a positive way by bringing something about "Superstars Celebs At Maha Kumbh" instead of wanting the thread to 'die a quiet death' elsewhere?

No, also the Mahakhumb in Prayagraj happens many times in a century (as far as I know)... but if you can give me a source for that claim, please do so...I'm always eager to learn something new.

Just an excerpt about the one in 2013 and then, there had been one in 2019, too :"In 2013, 120 million pilgrims attended the Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj."

Btw, there are also other cities where these bathing festivals take place

No. Maha kumbh mela happens once in 144 years.

Kumbh Mela happens every 12 years.

Half kumbh mela happens every 6 years.

Also it happens in 5 different places haridwar, ujjayan, Nashik, Prayagraj and Ayodhya. It keeps alternating places I think.

News portals don't know much so they just call it kumbh mela.
