Maybe he should have actually stood up for Jaats and Jatts during the protest.. whats the point of making a film now? Hope it flops badly 🙃

Yep, embarrassing. Can't stand these opportunistic Punjabis like Sunny and Akshay.

Just a personal decision, but I won't watch any movie anymore Sunny Deol stars in...and if there are high box-office numbers, I'll certainly not believe in the "organic" tag...

Why? So they can keep growing MSP products, that the Government is obligated to buy from them, that No one needs and just rots in government storehouses. Not to mention that the MSP crops are highly water intensive and have literally ruined Punjab's water table, on the verge of becoming a desert state. Grow some real crops that are in demand and not so hard on the earth instead of being dependent on the government, like most other states. This isn't the 70s.

Although I knew that in Punjab they do a lot of single-crop farming, I wasn't aware that the situation is quite alarming (so thanks for the article).

Nevertheless I very much doubt that farmers would switch to other plants if the government doesn't provide for high yielding varieties seed and guarantee a minimum support price for alternative crops instead of doing that only for rice and wheat.

The wise Dr Manmohan Singh already tried that. He tried convincing rural leaders, granted Punjab Agricultural University 1 Billion rupees to try educating the landlords, 71,000 Cr in farm debt relief. The Agricultural reforms were Dr MMS's idea, not Modi's. Did Modi bring along his crony capitalist friends to profit from them, YES but that doesn't change the fact that MSP needs to go and Punjab needs to be saved. There's other ways to subsidize farmers.

See rural Punjab along with rural Haryana, Rajasthan & UP are living in the 1920's. Villages have 5 old men, called the Panchayat, that essentially run the village. They are the law and also illiterate. It's rooted in Patriarchy, Caste discrimination, honor killings, poverty and illiteracy. A few landlord families have the whole village mortgaged with them and do whatever they want. It's almost impossible to reason with them. Dr MMS tried for years, Modi didn't even bother. The farm laws must get refined and through a democratic process be reintroduced.

Basically I think that even the rural village power-plays can get changed through well-refined and economically profitable solutions.

Dr. Manmohan Singh was a committed and caring PM.
