I feared it could happen but I so much hoped it would not.

This movie will always be special to me...and isn't it that what is important? (how much a movie matters to the one who watched it).

It's a bonus if other liked/loved it, too smiley27

To me it's the same old BW story - hero stalking the heroine obsessively after one look at her, except some terrorism thrown here and there

At that time in India, terrorism was raging in a north, northwestern, northeastern, southern state and bombings were common, to a lesser extent suicide bombings too. Can anyone forget 1991 suicide bomber attack that killed Rajiv Gandhi?

So maybe Indian people didn't find this boring movie which didn't have any depth, exciting

But for people watching now for the first time this movie might be exciting esp if they're a SRK fan

I LOVE this movie. I can watch it any time. The songs were so so so good. Everybody acted so convincingly. My heart broke for Shahrukh. smiley27

Also, Dil se was the only movie where Manisha was bearable for me.

You didn't like her Bombay? That was her best

Look wise she was her best in 1942 love story (boring movie though, with great songs)

Yes, Bombay was good. I liked the movie. Manisha & Arvind both looked good together. But I feel, there wasn't much for her to do performance wise...in fact nobody had much scope...it was the story that everybody was interested in.

1942...she looked very pretty, songs were amazing...but that's about it. I didn't like that movie either.

I watched it for the first time and am a huge SRK fan - but did not enjoy the movie.

To me, obsession over one chance meeting is way too much of a stretch for a normal sorted person and SRK was a balanced normal person in this movie, unlike Darr or Baazigar where one could explain such behaviour.

It was not believable to me that he would become that obsessed over some random woman.

Dil Se... it's one of the movies I've difficulties to talk about because it's so close to reality...a reality that existed at that time, a reality that still exists. I cannot think at the movie, hear the songs without getting emotional about the reality.

Of course, it is a fictional story but it is based on reality and that shines through. The leading characters reflect two different ways of being affected by the existing violence. I don't think that the love story can be detatched from the existing reality...it's love in times of 'war'.

The young woman played by Manisha very well could have been like the young Sri-Lankian who killed Rajiv Gandhi, herself and 14 others among them a kid and a youngster, deeply damaged by the violence that had become part of her life.

And the journalist played by ShahRukh got involved beyond his 'reality'-reports and interviews trying to heal something, to repair something irreparable through his love.

Latter reminds me of MNIK, also a movie where reality is intertwined with the fictional story but where my own sadness is on another level than with Dil Se.

This is an interesting post. To me Dil Se is a perfect movie. One of my favourites actually. But it has never been a love story for me. Amar was clearly obsessed with Meghna. He was a creep and a stalker. To me, this is one of his greatest villain roles 😂 Only because it makes me sick how his actions can be interpreted as ‘love’ by so many ppl in real life. He continuously violated her boundaries, stalked and even sexually assaulted her. How ppl still view this as a love story is beyond me.

I don’t believe Meghna ever loved him. Not even at the end. I think she developed a soft spot after a while but she never loved him. She just used him as a means to an end. Her mission and revenge was more important than the dreams Amar was trying to sell her.

The political aspect of the movie was very interesting to watch. The movie was definitely slow and i feel like a lot of cuts were made but i loved it regardless.

I honestly think this is one of SRKs best performances. And it is definitely my most hated character 😂 His desperation, confusion and obsession with Meghna was clear to see. His privilege and selfishness was also portrayed perfectly. He truly only cared about HIS feelings. He never once tried to emphasise with Meghna, he just wanted her to succumb to him no matter what. My favourite scene was the one in that broadcasting room where he tries to get information out of her and when she turns to leave he gives up. Amars desperation was almost palpable in that scene.

All this to say, I really loved Dil Se ❤️

That’s because that was common in BW movies then. Almost every other movie had stalking, harassing hero and it was shown as love.

Only diff here is the girl didn’t fall for him and change her ways.

Although I don't agree with everything relative to the love-angle, you very well described the intensity this movie emanates.
