and big deal if Westerners can differentiate between an Indian, Pakistani or Bangladesi...brown people....as if we can differentiate between a a person from Bhutan or Philippines or Chinese or Japanese.....or if we can differentiate between a person from England , Germany or Ireland....people belonging to the same race look similar....big deal....important thing is to give respect to the person irrespective of the race...

I'm just trying to find reasons..

Indian in USA can also refer to native americans or indigenous peoples of North America. So saying Indian movie won Oscar would create confusion. Calling South Asian movie would at least point outside of America..😅 Anyways half of Americans care a damn of Anything Asian Or South Asian or South East Asian. For them us all are Unhygienic and Job Stealers.

maybe they are trying to make diwali more “mainstream” like they did with Christmas… I have some Christian friends who don’t like the removal of Christianity from Xmas… it’s mostly done to make this holiday more capitalist by making sure more and more people take part in it…
But a lot of Christians feel the religious essence and spirit of Christmas is lost due to this

the way things are going I’m sure down the line they will re-package ramazan as yearly detox festival, as sell detox kits and protein bars to help celebrate the spirit of ramazan 🤣

Very true. They are in the business of secularising even religion related events. They're wishing each other by saying happy holidays instead of happy Christmas these days.

These people don't seem to understand the point of being religious and at the same time being tolerant of other faiths. They fail to understand and accept the fact that one can be church going bible christian and still have secular outlook.Every one who goes to church reads bible and prays regularly is referred to as conservative right wing etc etc

bold: That's generalising... the other part of your post makes a lot of sense.

Absolutely. Christmas and Eastern, e.g., start about two months ago in shops and supermarkets...it's about buying and consuming and/or planning the work-free time...celebrating the religious background more and more takes a backseat.

My problem isn’t when western media refers to us as desi or south Asian.

My problem is when Priya Krishnan of NYT does it. At least she knows better being from Indian origin.

But then she has to get paid. India ke bare mein aschha likhegi toh NYT mein job kese milegi. smiley36

As someone already mentioned, if anything is good or even neutral, it's not from India, anything bad, then it is...

Rest assured, if a Pakistani or a Bangladeshi movie had won they wouldn't be mentioning South Asia, the countries name would certainly be mentioned😛

Urdu originated in India. Especially from UP and Central India.

Punjabi is also an Indian language, originated in North India.

There is no such thing as a Pakistani language because Pakistan itself did not exist before 1947.

Urdu and Punjabi are Indian languages. Just as Bengali is also an Indian language. Never seen Bangladeshis call Bangla a Bangladeshi language.

Dost humne Urdu kisi ko nahin diya hai... Urdu is one of the 22 official languages of India. Not only did Urdu originate in India, India also has the most Urdu speakers in the world lol.

So Urdu is like a gift from India to Pakistan... a gift that India gets to keep even after sharing... Lucknowi Urdu aaj bhi Pakistan ke kisi bhi ilaaqe ke Urdu ko fail kar saktiy 😎
