Its just a term. It's very commonly used in the West, that's it.

Why tho?
Why would non Indians identify themselves as desis when they have their own identity very very different from Indians? I get that goras maynot be aware of it all but people hailing from Indian subcontinent do very well know who they are and where they come from...so why are those who are not Indian origins associating themselves with this term Desi?
Desh is a hindi word for country hence the countrymen are all called desis however people of Pakistan and bangladesh use the word mulk. Hence they can not and should not call themselves desist because we all have out own identity, culture, religion etc
So unless n until we don't assert out own identity, we cant blame goras for acting ignorant
Des is also an urdu and Punjabi word. Widely and commonly used in both languages.
It’s not an Indian exclusive term
there are Hindi speaking Fijians too… who use this term too… so I don’t think you can dictate who can use word and who cannot

On Instagram, usage of words like Brown and Desi are very common for all those who hail from countries in South Asia or Indian subcontinent.
I also notice how in recent years there has been shift from using Indian subcontinent to South Asia in media abroad.
Plenty of orgs, think tanks, websites and journals have been using South Asia in recent decades.
Yes… even south Asian diaspora especially under 30 (gen z I guess) use these terms

@bold — by You, I meant article writer. Not you.
Agree about rest of things you are saying.
There’s no controversy but there sure is a deliberate attempt by western media to discredit India and Indian culture for their achievements or good doings whereas criticism for every small thing is named and shamed without the care.
They’be been doing that for a while now evne for Bangladeshis and Pakistanis too. most recent example was joyland and maula jatt reported as south Asian or even movie from Indian sub continent
maybe they are trying to make diwali more “mainstream” like they did with Christmas… I have some Christian friends who don’t like the removal of Christianity from Xmas… it’s mostly done to make this holiday more capitalist by making sure more and more people take part in it…
But a lot of Christians feel the religious essence and spirit of Christmas is lost due to this
the way things are going I’m sure down the line they will re-package ramazan as yearly detox festival, as sell detox kits and protein bars to help celebrate the spirit of ramazan 🤣

No wonder about THAT...You can point your finger on the Indian government and it's support of Hindutva.
So you are also one of them.
I won’t ping finger at anyone but western media. Bike huye hai sab. Moral ethics hava mein. Get paid to run false propaganda. Hiding Hindu under the garb of qtiyapa.
Just like when Rajamouli said RRR is a Telugu movie.....everyone was up in arms....its an Indian movie.....how dare he???😆
Isn't India part of Asia?? same pinch..😆

This is the norm in the reporting and popular culture here.
Anything good that is being covered is under - South Asia
And anything bad being covered is under - India/Hindu majority.
I read an article about Diwali which has no mention of the word Hindu. It’s a south Asian festival. 😆
It’s the age of misinformation and setting the narrative.
yup....isn't it??😉😆
I think it's meant to be inclusive, you do have to realize that there are people of Indian origin in North America whose families are from Fiji, Guyana, Caribbean, Africa but they can't really they say they are from India as that is incorrect (maybe there families are from present day Pakistan or Bangladesh), hence they refer to ancestry as South Asian.
Also, I think it's North American media being lazy, a lot of them referred to Michelle Yeoh's win as first Asian women to win an Oscar in Best Actor category.
South Asian, East Asian, South East Asian, Eastern European, Middle Eastern….these are all very commonly used terms in the US. It doesn’t mean anything, really other than to refer to a group of people from the same geographical region.
