Chem is about timing I think. I'm no actor, but if the timing of action-reaction doesn't match, chem doesn't show up on screen.
The other thing is audience perception. Peeps were wanting to see RS-DP on screen as they were still a new couple. Now, I'm not sure a film with them as romantic leads oppo each other would work.
You know, I'm convinced chemistry comes from the characters and how they are written. I thought Saif and Rani were electric in Hum tum, but so blah in Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic. Saif and Vidya were on fire in Parineeta, although I wouldnt have imagined that. I then thought maybe Saif's persona works better with actresses that have a more calmer effect onscreen, but then he lights up with Preity who's bubbly. And I thought he and Kareena were so blah in Tashan, but so gorgeous and sublime and raw in Kurbaan, though the movie tanked. Its completely based on the way the characters are written
