The problem with Bollywood is that they celebrate mediocrity
Gangubai didn't do as well as it was projected, you'd think the movie was on par with RRR and KGF in terms of collections, with the kind of promotion they did for it
Now, Bhool Bhulaiya, a franchise movie opened with 14cr and they react like this
Tweet from Andhra Box office on Acharya opening collection -
This for a movie which collected around 39cr on opening day in Ap-Tg (Couldn't find the tweet for all India collection)
Acharya tanked, Distributors faced loss and producers decided to compensate for the loss
Here, They'll declare Bhool Bhulaiya a hit too because money in distributors and Exhibitors pockets is not important for them, Production is collecting enough from OTT and satellite rights, PR and perception of their movies being a hit is more important than collections, it seems
Of course, It can do well that's beside the point but this kind of dhol nagada for opening of 14cr in over 3400 screens is 🤦♀️
Bollywood at this point is just desperate for a Hit.😆 It was proved long ago that Bollywood ignores a large part of their audience when Bahubali 2 just in Hindi version made far more money than any Bollywood film. That time many called it a fluke which won't happen again and now KGF 2 does the same thing.
The reviewers, trade analysts and box office sites no matter how much they criticize Bollywood, at the end of the day they would still support it because their shop runs because of them. Even KRK who bashes anything and everything has given a positive review to Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 but hasn't cared enough to review Dhaakad.
The IMDb rating of BB 2 is currently at 8.1. Now I haven't watched the film yet to tell how it is, but from when movies of Anees Bazmee and Farhad Samji started getting such high ratings?
The original Bhool Bhulaiyaa which was a remake of a Malayalam classic is just at 7.3. Is the sequel so much better than the first film to get such high rating? On the other hand Dhaakad obviously got review bombed since it has got more 1 star reviews than the actual audience who watched the film on first day.😆
14 Crore opening is good by Kartik standards, but yeah I agree, celebrating it in such a way is kind of pathetic.😆
The thing is, after two South films and one Hollywood film doing exceptional business in Hindi belt while Bollywood movies are flopping left, right and center, no matter if it's Eid or non-holiday, they need this perception that they're still doing well. It's likely that we would again get a series of flops for atleast a month till the time BB 2 becomes old news and Bollywood needs another Hit to keep the perception going.
Before the pandemic, OTT, satellite, music rights etc. were never considered as profits by the trade. Box office verdicts were given only based on theatrical revenue (domestic) and money made by distributors.
Box office India had to change their rules on how they give their verdicts to declare Sooryavanshi and Gangubai as Hits. Their budgets are still more than the money they made. Earlier the budgets were also increased as the movies were delayed because of interest. Here the movies were delayed for two years because of the pandemic but nobody takes that into account anymore.
Since there is no official box office site reporting numbers for Bollywood, it's just he said, she said and we can only wonder what is the truth.
