You know this movie has truly made an impact when the last person you ever expected to watch a movie like this is asking you “have you seen it yet? It’s an absolute must watch”. So glad to see just how well this movie has done despite the content not being your general Bollywood flick.

My review on this (because this is) non Bollywood movie.

Is Vivek Agnihotri a great director? NO. He does not have the subtlety and nuances of a class director.

In 80's-90's there used to be many movies where a hero's sister gets raped and hero later takes revenge, That rape scene was shown for ten minutes in graphic. Around same time, an ace director in my language was directing a movie. Plot? How a blind woman gets exploited by society and how she still finds her life. A scene involved where she is bathing and she is unaware that she is being watched by a crook. How did the director shoot that scene? In entire scene, heroine is never shown. Camera only focuses on the man's expressions who is watching through the keyhole. Effect? You are only filled with disgust. But the scene never titillates or provokes. Yes. All that scene needed was a good artist. His expression defines the entire story, A director's mastery is shown wherher he wants to recreate a scene with copied actions, or nuanced reactions. I also recall a scene in Buniyaad which shown partition horrors not by actual scene but through the protogonist's reaction. (For the same reason, I never consider Maniratnam as a great director or Bombay as a classic movie. It was raw).

In Kashmir files, director need not have to show every violent scene so graphically. In last scene, iif he could have only shown Sharada's back, then her facial expressions, scene could have been more powerful.

Similarly climax scene of shooting 20+ people. Instead of showing each one with unexpressive face, get a person who knows acting (that kid Shiva could have done it). Keep showing his expression changing with only gunshot sound as the background. (Eyes closed, trembling, praying at every gunshot). Later showing him in the same pit. It would have had more effect. But directir did not not use any such techniques when showing horror and brutality. One can say, they were real. I am not disputing that. But cinema (art) is different from documentary. It excels when it is told from reactionary form. Documentaries show actions live.

Music: I wanted more of the song which a woman in Jammu camp was singing and died. A slow song with minimum instruments with earthy music. First few lines in Kashmiri, with lyrics depicting the longing of a migrated person towards his/her home. It could have been an anthem for every migrant worker living within or outside the country. Every generation had one. (Sabse Pyare Subah Tere, Tujh pe Dil Qubaan - Kabuliwalah, Chod Aaye Hum Woh Galiya - Machis). Film missed the opportunity.

Compare it with the song Dekhenge in the same film (Pallavi Joshi's voice is heard long time after Antakshari). Left has more media presence because it knows how to use soft power (music, songs) to spread ideology.

Editing. JNU scenes (Pallavi Joshi exiting) should have been at the end. (May be my personal choice).

I do believe, film could have been directed much better. That is why I am disappointed with the film makers I admire a lot. Gulzar and his extension, Vishal Bharadwaj; Starting from with their Jungle book serial title song to Machis to Haider. I have loved their work. Gulzar being a Punjabi Hindu never showed Khalistani's brutality over Punjabi Hindus in 80s. (That chapter is still unknown). Machis only focussed on brutal crackdown by Police forces. Vishal Bharadwaj again touched on Police force excess in Kashmir, without touching Pundit genocide in Haider. Gujarat riots got covered extensively by media, through dumentaries and movies. I watched Kai Po Che which showed train burning with one photograph, but covered riots in detail. But no one showed Pundits sufferings for 30 years. That is where this film stands different.

There are people who mock this movie (Kunal Kamra's "joke" that he will make Bandra files). We cannot expect sensitivity from people sick jokes at those who died in Godhra train burning.

Has the movie found different audience? No. We are the same audience who watch War, Dhoom and all other nonsense movies. But we all have shades. There are times when we want to listen to party songs with friends. The same us prefer to listen Jagjeet Singh when we sit alone.

What is making audience to shell thousands of Rs on a movie which ultimately makes them feel depressed, heavy and guilty? Answer is "Truth". You white wash it, suprress it, bury it. Ultimately it comes out and triumphs all. Satyameva Jayate.

Ur point about subtlety in film making maybe right. But it may not convey the sheer impact of the brutality..if the actor excels then great..but what if he/she doesn't?

I haven't watched the movie yet so don't know if it could have been..maybe what u r saying could've worked.

Kunal Kamra is a joke

Hope the film does well.

Propaganda always creates a better impact than reality. Do watch Hitler's propaganda movies about how well prisoners were treated inside concentration camps. Was that, however, the true reality?

What propaganda?

Propaganda is what was going till now.

The film shows the exact truth as it happened.

Showing truth is not Propaganda.

If you cannot bring yourself to feel any sympathy for hundreds of people who were slaughtered/raped/ driven out of their homes, the least you can do is SHUT UP. And that is me being polite

I don't doubt BJP's ability to twist the KP ms plight to their advantage. But Kashmir pandit exodus itself is NOT A PROPAGANDA. Its harsh reality
