Both time stamps were hilarious. 🤣 WTF did I just watch? Kinda looks like me when I’m trying to copy classical dancing in front of my bedroom mirror. Usually a family member would walk into my room while I’m in the middle of executing 1:37
The movie is on the life of Jayalalitha so no way the press would dare to right bad reviews, paid or not paid.
The Guardian reviewer didn't get the memo but then he's British 😆 (2 out of 5 stars)
www.theguardian.com/film/2021/sep/06/thalaivii-review-kangana-ranaut
The recipient of 2021’s second highest-profile Twitter ban, Kangana Ranaut has channelled her newfound spare time into a biopic of J Jayalalithaa, Tamil cinema sweetheart turned regional political powerhouse. (Think The Iron Lady, if Margaret Thatcher had enrolled at the Rank charm school.) The result is a hodgepodge of a film, haphazardly passing a long, storied life through the multiplex cookie-cutter. Yet it’s also semi-fascinating, as a project only India’s robustly forgiving star system could now initiate. The true subject often seems to be Ranaut herself – like Jayalalithaa, a woman whose steely ambition provokes both devotion and ire. “Who the heck are you?” barks an opposition MP before a Congress debate descends into a literal pile-on.
The trajectory certainly mirrors Ranaut’s own: effort is made to court movie lovers, then things get fractious. Director AL Vijay lays on a fun recreation of the 1960s Tamil film business, with its wet-sari numbers and clunky-cute courtships. Throwback scenes have become a staple, but Vijay stages his with craft and detail: the songs are strong, and somebody has sourced period undergarments that moulded the female torso into comically unnatural shapes. We are reminded of Ranaut’s onscreen flexibility: adroitly segueing from gamine to stateswoman, she gets a laugh in passing simply by answering her dressing-room door in a blonde wig. Yet the script approaches politics as a stage-managed dress-up, where you don a sober sari, and sit back to receive the plaudits.
Regular rallies – hundreds of extras, clapping to suggest Something of Import is being conveyed – don’t reveal the politics that would make Thalaivii enlightening. In their place, we get would-be crowdpleasing stunts: ladling gruel on a chief minister’s desk or hauling herself from a wheelchair to flash peace signs on a balcony, our heroine seems to want a standing ovation for everything. While more nuanced than many of its star’s recent statements – it could hardly be otherwise – the film still feels like a passive-aggressive idea of doubling down. Jayalalithaa gets elevated to high office, leaving roomfuls of sycophants bowing to her will, and Ranaut looking like she’s exactly where she wants to be.

Praises Kangana but calls the film half baked with bad dialogue and forgettable music
I just wish one day I wake up to Bollywood finally making worthy biopics, hence the review ends here because I’m sleeping as today’s not that day. Such an epic tale of a legendary person is yet again narrowed down to be a predictable puzzle made by some extremely convenient pieces.

Praises lead actors and love story but not the political angle and second half
Thailaivii pays a resounding ode to Jaya-MGR’s poignant love story, a relationship without labels. The political aspect feels talky, half baked and one-sided. What eventually stays with you is the story of a woman who defied the odds and wrote her own destiny.

No one has said she's a horrible actress...she is not as good as she thinks she is...
But that doesnt change the fact that she is a horrible and vile person. Watching her films will mean supporting her and as an ex-fan and decent human being, I won't do that!
I refuse to put my money on any of her projects!
I co-sign this message.
It is a shame because she is a phenomenal performer. But I do not support that level of bigotry.
I shudder to think what will happen if she falls out with whichever government daddy is paying her bills currently. The downfall will be spectacular.

I know. She went overboard with her vileness although she wasn't wrong when she started. Her body language in KWK was shouting out loud that she was being bullied and mocked. But now she has completely lost it.
I still have soft corner for her as I used to love her since her Wo lamhe and Gangster days. She is so unconventionally beautiful plus she is currently the best among the new lot. (Only Vidya can give her competition) Datto was a terrific role, Rani was too.
People make fun of Manikarnika but I think that passion that she put in portraying Rani Laxmi bai was really great. I can't imagine any other actress in that role and justifying it.
Deepika no, Alia no, Vidya no, Tabu no Priyanka may be - You need some strong personality to portray Rani Laxmi Bai which is surely lacking in current ladies
Similar to Sanju I guess
No she is NOT one of the best current anythings, in particular that best actress title is as fake as the rest of kangana is, the fact that you have to add a disclaimer to a praise is proof that it is a selling point, a bougie, pretentious made up lie by her PR , so that they can justify her vile hate mongering and her entitlement tantrums, in other words: she is vile, evil and a liar but it is ok and and all her faults can be overlooked by all the little people, simply because she is such a good "actress" that people all over India can get on their knees and praise her, because there are no other talented-beautiful women in India...
The truth is that she is mediocre at best as an actor, physically she is average on good days to ugly and frumpy regularly. She is non original on everything, all the credit she claims is there thanks to other peoples work work, designs, ideas... that have been shared with her or that she has snatched and appropriated, even her quotes are plagiarized, the few successful films she has had, are NOT her work they belong to the writers, producers, directors and entire teams of people who get no credit, the photos she boasts about are done thanks to photographers, stylists and photo shoppers, so basically her call to battle about doing everything on her own is a LIE
So PLEASE STOP parroting the lie that she is a bad human but has to be tolerated because she is so talented that somehow the world can't do without her. The fact is that a lot of very talented young unknowns have missed out on opportunities to shine and show their talent because kangana is playing a power game, with people who have the ability to corrupt the art because art is not their agenda, politics and power are. The string of flops she has do not justify the opportunities she has been given nor the awards gotten thru corruption, nor the money she boasts about and squanders in front of hungry eyes in a country ravaged by a created virus and a sinking economy...
I wish people would stop for one second and really consider things like the expense of her government security detail, the unmerited awards, the acceptance of her free se, adultery and self confessed drug use and push others to use, the benefits of permits and allowances that others do not get or have to answer to the law for vs her contributions to society with all that "talent" and really consider if it adds up or if it balances?

For that kind of monkey jumping she apparently prepared for 1 full month. I bet with that kind of prep and help, you toh can win competitions.

The director's filmography is full of mediocre stuff. There's no way in hell this film is that good, especially after all those boring songs and promos. I am smelling some paid reviews.
There you go. Just as I predicted. NDTV review is out.
