Also skeptical of Barfi.

"A cult film, also commonly referred to as a cult classic, is a film with a cult following, obscure or unpopular with mainstream audiences, and often revolutionary or ironically enjoyed."

In that way , I'd add :

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron & some bygone parallel movies

Pushpak

Veerana

Gulaal

Some of RGV ones like Dil Se , Daud etc.

Haasil (in case it was obscure or unpopular with mainstream audience about which I ain't that sure)

There could be more..

Thanks.

Gulaal is my favorite Anurag Kashyap movie! It pains my heart when I realize mainstream will neither love it nor appreciate the beauty of it's songs. The satire in those songs can cut diamonds! I personally feel it didn't do as well as it should've. Although I'll rate GOW below it, it was still GOW that permeated into our collective minds, and was everywhere - from memes to parodies to digital copies shared amongst friends.

Also, since you brought up the definition of cult classic, I'd slightly disagree (definitions below). The movie need not be an obscure one. E.g. I regard Pulp Fiction as one of the best Hollywood cult classics, but it was a successful mainstream release!

I personally define a cult classic as something your friends are excited about long after the movie had released, something whose characters, dialogues or scenes are referenced, recreated frequently. ✌️

Cult Classic definitions:

Collin's Dictionary:

A cult classic is something such as a film or book that is considered to be one of the best of its kind by a small group of people.

Oxford Dictionary via Google:

something, typically a movie or book, that is popular or fashionable among a particular group or section of society.

"fans of this cult classic will be thrilled to see it in its original widescreen version"

Ah Veerana, nostalgia . There was a time when Ramsay Brothers movies were considered the real horror classic!! All their movies were epic 😆

I dont think HAHK, DDLJ, Dabanng, Hera Pher etc. can be counted as cult classics. They were massive hits and have a huge fanbase since the time they were released.

Whereas movies like Gulaal, Black Friday, Wasseypur fall in arty/off beat category. They would never made to have a big fan following

Cult classics usually need to check a few boxes for consideration

- movie being panned and disliked upon release

- the fandom is limited and only increases well after the release

- becomes very quotable in pop culture (or meme-able these days)

Pulp fiction is a classic example. It did not do well on release, is still disliked by a lot of people and most people say that they do not get it or find it ridiculous. The fanbase has mushroomed over time and it is one of the most quotable movies.

In bollywood, I would say we have Andaz Apna Apna, Shaan, Bheja Fry, Nayak, Gunda, etc. Its hard to find cult classics and that sort of is the point of cult classics anyways

Kaagaz ke Phool

Jaane bhi do Yaaron

EK ruka hua faisla

Silsila

Gunda

Lamhe

Andaaz Apna Apna

Dil Se

These are the ones I've watched...

Not really!

Pulp Fiction had a production budget of $8 million.

It fetched over $9 million on its opening weekend itself, and was box office #1 that week.

Ended up grossing over $200 million worldwide.

It was critically acclaimed and won multiple awards including Oscars!

I say it did well upon release!

Hey, each of us has been there! 😊

But I'm so happy that multiple have mentioned Gulaal. I have a special soft corner for that beauty.

BTW, personally I don't consider DDLJ, Dabangg, HAHK, Hera Pheri as cult classics. But I can see how they can be considered - they have their own fanbase and loads of cultural references.

So there are different cults that worship different movies. You may be in or out of that cult, but good to acknowledge their presence.
