Interesting thread and interesting takes

I don't think we have had a proper superstar since Hrithik's 2006 phase. And even his superstardom can be questioned when compared to the craze that the 3 Khans have had.

The problem is, you cannot become a superstar without mass following - you need good chunk of fan following amongst college goers and kids and the daily wager I feel. And you cannot have mass following by doing selective movies and roles or by doing 1 movie every 2 years. The college goer will move on to the next big thing, if you are not giving him/her a chance to watch morning shows regularly.

Ayushman has utilized this weak point of Ranver/Ranbir to walk his way towards stardom - he has been giving out atleast 2 movies per year for the past 5 years, even going to 4 movies per year. His movie templates are quite similar, but they hit a basic level of acceptance.

Plus Ranveer/Ranbir are too focused on urban audiences - especially Ranbir. Masses and college goers are not going to connect with movies like Tamaasha, Rockstar, Jagga Jasoos, Gully Boy, etc. I think they have started working on fixing this now (Sanju, Shamshera, 83, Jayeshbhai, Simmba - so still all is not lost.

The problem with the new crop of actresses is, like someone said. They are crowded by nepo kids and are all too similar and are following a set template.

When Deepika arrived or Anushka arrived, people stood up and took notice even if Deepika was awful in her first movie. Then there was someone like Tapsee/Vidya who did their time for a few years and then got had their breakthrough moments with solid performances and movie choices. But there was always a solid personality off screen also. Something set them apart

These new girls - Ananya, Jhanvi, Sara, Kriti, Disha, Shraddha, Vaani, Kiara - they are all the same. They do the same things off screen - instagram pics, beach vacay, selfies and what not. What really makes any one of them stand apart? Its like they all have the same talent agency handling their careers and making them follow a template. Maybe out of these, Kriti still stands out a bit.

Parineeti felt like someone with a unique persona and something different to offer, but then she went on that 'get in shape' spree and came back molded in the same cast as the above list of girls

Alia has made a name for herself with good movie choices after her bland debut. But there also, I don't see any mass connect.

in 1990s 50% were insiders means star kids 50% outsiders

Like sunny deol, amir khan, salman, ajay, raveena, karishma, manisha, rani, kajol, tabu, bobby deol were star kids

govinda, akshay, suniel shetty, madhuri, sridevi, shilpa shetty, urmila, priety, juhi chawla, sonali, srk were outsiders

In 2000-2009 60% star kids and 40% outsiders

john, vidya, kangana were outsiders

hrithik, kareena, ranbir were star kids

now 30% outsiders 70% insiders so obviously quality suffers

To be a star, you need this intangible quality; it's more than talent. People have to be enamored with you, be inspired by you in some way, or relate to you in some way. The stories you have, they keep people's interest. The other day my family put on an old episode of Kapil Sharma. Waheeda Rehman, Asha Parekh, and Helen were there - they had such interesting stories to talk about ... their backgrounds, how they made it, how they were noticed, the kind of conditions they worked in - no bathrooms, the lights used to be so bad it would burn their skin, their eyes would turn red, etc.

Can you imagine any stories about the folks today? Just what is inspiring about them or even remotely relatable? They all reek of privilege and most refuse to acknowledge it. Scroll their insta page and they're all carbon copies of each other - vacay pics, bikini pics, random pics, movies, magazine covers. There is no struggle to relate to. One of the reasons someone like SRK became so big is that people looked at him and said, if he can rise from the ashes from extreme lows and make it, then I can to. Similar stories about the others - Salman has this strong personality. Hrithik has been the best looking debutante since ages and the way he could dance back then...it was captivating. Similar stories about many of the female stars like Madhuri, Kajol, Priyanka, etc.

With the rise of social media, the mystery is gone too. Only promoting within eventually breeds mediocrity and more of the same. You need some outside blood to bring life back in. There are plenty of options nowadays with OTT that BW being limited in choices doesn't mean that you have no choice but to watch the same people. Ya the big screen experience is different, and will always be loved but the content needs to match up.

COVID has reset a lot of things. It needs to be seen how it changes BW moving forward.

I personally think that internet and social media have taken away the mystique surrounding celebrities, so there cannot possibly be anymore "stars" as such, or what one usually associates with being a star. Maybe 50 years down the line, some celebrities will be called legends or stars even, but I don't think anybody has that star quality as of now. The same goes for Hollywood as well.

24/7 updates, SM connectedness, carefully crafted and overactive PRs have taken away the intrigue that once surrounded celebrities.

Many of them barely made a splash. They faded out as soon as they came. Who remembers the work of Karen Kapoor, Suneil Anand, Puru Rajkumar, Rahul Bhatt and Tejaswini Kolhapure despite the first three having legends as their fathers who could inveigle them into more roles? They were quickly weeded out. Shabrani Mukherji had only that blind girl music video going for her. I don't recall any of her movies. Rajiv Kapoor is only remembered for Ram Teri Ganga Maili. Jyothika made her way south after only one movie. Kumar Gaurav and Uday Chopra were the only ones who persistently tried to come back. (KG at least delivered the solo superhit Lovestory, though he milked it for a long time. The less said about Uday the better). The others all gave up and went their way. This is unlike the current crop of starkids who will be sticking around for a long long time.
