The last decade in Bollywood and the abysmal quality of stars

1990-1999 gave us stars like SRK, Akshay, Ajay Devgan, Karisma, Govinda, Urmila, Tabu, Manisha, Kajol, Aishwarya, Rani and Preity.

2000-2009 gave us stars such as Hrithik, Kareena, Deepika, Ranbir, Priyanka, Vidya, Kangana, Anushka and Katrina.

Contrast this with 2010-2019 and there are just 3 stars - Ranveer, Varun and Ayushmann who emerged from that decade. OK, count in Alia too. but that's just 4.

This current decade, so far looks even more dismal in prospect.

Why this declining quality?

Discuss.

The evolution of technology is the biggest reason. Now people have access to better and bigger foreign movies

Most of the people still go to watch Bollywood movies, I feel, but they prefer the older stars.

People like Taapsee, Parineeti, Kartik, Kriti, Yami, Ileana etc. have had limited successes. I wouldn't count them as big stars.

Hollywood, on the other hand, has such amazing new stars such as Timothy Shalomet and Saiorse Ronan...

We grew up with our 90s heroes and heroines. I was 11 when DTPH came out for example and I was completely mesmerised by Madhuri, SRK, Karisma etc

Today's kids will feel the same way about Ranveer, Alia, Ranbir etc

Like in my mum's day, she just loved Shashi Kapoor. For her, SRK didn't quite hit the same.

My dad loved Amitabh Bachchan. Anil Kapoor wasn't "it" for him.

It's a matter of TIME Minty - waqt waqt ki baat hai ji... a.k.a we are getting OLD ;)

-

Give it some time.

If we were in a time machine and went back to 1999, it would seem funny to describe Tabu/Manisha/Preity as "High Quality SuperStars" at that time.

We have had 3 decade changes to think of them as such.

Hence... wait(!!!) for another 15-20 years to see who the SuperStars of the 2020s were.

It will be clearer, plus the next generation of fans will revise history like some of us are doing today.

It will go something like this...

Headlines:

11th March 2035

"Taimur and Aradhya and Adira are nothing compared to the SuperStars of the 20s such as Tiger Shroff, Kriti Sanon and Janhvi Kapoor"

I think we all know the answer😅.. The talent is always there but opportunities not so much. Today a movie makes a star not the other way round but look at the quality of movies we are churning out.

The flip side is that the "star" culture is slowly going down, and good "actors" are allowed to exist/co-exist and thrive, along with conventional, commercial heroes/heroines.smiley20

Apart from Alia, we have other actresses who debuted in the last decade Taapsee, Bhumi etc doing films on their own merit.

We still have good actresses in Sanya M., Radhika Madan, Sanya Malhotra etc who SEEM TO BE NOT opting for similar/flowerpot roles .......unlike last batch of actresses (Sonakshi, Vaani, Illeana, Disha, Nargis F., Kaira, Yami etc etc) who badly relegated themselves to the "heroine bracket"smiley26,

The likes of Kareena, Priyanka, Anushka, Deepika, Vidya, Kangana, are still around in one way or the other😉. They have practically changed the debate around the longevity an actresses's career, and the roles they can do. 👏

And with OTT, we have several old gems coming back to the game like Sushmita Sen, who delivered an excellent performance in Aarya.👏

Amond actors, Nawaaz, Rajkumar Rao etc etc are finally getting the recognition and have been collaborating with actors, who are considered "mainstream".👍🏼

Khans are zoning out, but they're still pretty much in the game along with Shahid and Ranbir.👍🏼

Tiger Shroff has his own thing going in the landscape of mindless, action flicks.😆

Basically, industry is very accommodating now.

Don't forget that debutantes from late 2000s like Ranbir, Anushka, Deepika etc etc all celebrated their haydays in 2010s only.

So, it's not too late for Jhanvi, Ananya, Sara to bounce back. They have age in their favor, and family connections to back them up.😆

Also, don't remember we lost Sushant.🥺 (a 2010s debuntante) who could've gone miles ahead of Varun, Vicky if only he had a little support by BW.

I am not talking about subjective opinions, I also like Taapsee for example but she is not a star. I am talking about star quality and the number of stars which declined drastically last decade. I am open to new faces if they have charisma, screen presence, looks, and talent and I think some newcomers fit the bill also. So no, nostalgia is not the seductive liar for me. It's about statistics. The stars of the 90's and 2000's are still relevant today, because of lack of alternatives. Just check out Ormax and the top 5 stars in each decade.

A little support by BW but also had he not made some wrong career choices.. He picked scripts that were bad or ended up getting shelved. I don't know about stardom or leaving behind Varun but he sure would have a long career had he stayed
